More pedestrians died on Route 1 between Stamford and Guilford than any other street in the state in the past three years, making it the most dangerous place to walk in Connecticut, a transportation group has found.
The Tri-State Transportation Campaign, a nonprofit group that lobbies for decreased automobile use, analyzed statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatality Analysis Reporting System to calculate which roads in Connecticut, New York and New Jersey had the highest number of pedestrian deaths from 2005 to 2007.
Stamford and Norwalk each had five pedestrian deaths in that time, according to the study
Greenwich had two; New Canaan and Darien had one each. Bridgeport had eight pedestrian fatalities, including five on Route 1, the most in the state. ...
....The South Western Regional Planning Agency is putting together a regional bike plan that will include parts of the Post Road where sidewalks and better crosswalks could improve pedestrian safety, said Alex Karman, a senior regional planner for the agency.
Two federally funded studies evaluating ways to ease traffic on Route 1, one in Stamford and Norwalk, and the other in Darien, might yield other ideas, Karman said.
"While the studies are primarily concerned with vehicles, they will also look at where there are and aren't sidewalks and look where there are deficiencies already identified," he said
