I am writing in support of Peter Tesei. My reasons have nothing to do with politics and everything to do with my personal experience working with him in town government.

From the vantage point of my positions as a member of both the RTM and BET for a total of 27 years, I have observed his competence as he has worked with difficult issues and with people of many different persuasions. He knows very well how this town functions and he has ably led his district, the Board of Estimate, and, now, for two years, the Town of Greenwich as a whole in a constructive direction.

I believe he has the experience and proven leadership to best serve the town for the next terms as First Selectman.

As a former chairman of the Board of Education, I worked closely with Peter Tesei, the then Chairman of the Board of Estimate and Taxation.

I found him to be a consultative leader who listens as well as he speaks. At the time, he was respectful of the Board of Education's hard work to raise standards, improve facilities (including the rebuilding of Hamilton Avenue School, Glenville School, and the improvement of athletic facilities with artificial turf), and to institutionalize greater accountability. Best of all he was accessible and helpful. Peter Tesei is a Republican who supports the public schools.

More recently, I was impressed by Peter's response as First Selectman to reduce the size of town government when the economy stalled.

However, necessary, laying off one's neighbors is not easy to do. It requires not only courage, but also the ability to set priorities and to act compassionately. Peter recognized that, during a recession, we all have less to spend on everything. Moreover, his actions demonstrated his effective working relationship with the Board of Estimate and Taxation.

So, on Nov 3, I plan to support Peter Tesei for First Selectman and Dave Theis for Selectman. Their priorities are mine: connect with the community, maintain essential local services, demand excellence, and keep town spending under control.

Privilege is a word often used by those who live outside of Greenwich to describe the type of life that they believe that those of us who live in Greenwich lead. I believe that while the use of the word is most appropriate to describe those of us fortunate enough to live here, the meaning those using it are ascribing to the word is incorrect.

As a lifelong resident (well nearly except for college, graduate school and a short time before I was able to move the miracle mile back to Greenwich), I am indeed privileged to live in a community as vibrant and supportive as Greenwich.

I live in a place where dedicated and caring people give of themselves to make their community a better place. I live in a place where volunteerism thrives. I live in a place which has a wonderful school system, beautiful parks and a charm that few other communities are able to sustain.

I live in a place where we are so fortunate to have intelligent, responsive and responsible people wanting to be a part of government.

It is simply not possible for everyone to agree on every action that a political figure undertakes or suggests. So, in deciding whom to vote for, it is most important to look at the candidate's integrity, the body of their work, whether they have good intentions and whether the course they want the town to travel corresponds with the voter's own view of what is desirable and a viable course.

I knowPeter Tesei personally and believe that his moral character is unwaveringly strong and set on the right course. I know how hard he has worked for the good of the town and know that he has made difficult decisions in a difficult time. I know that he recognizes that there are many difficult decisions yet to be made and is prepared to make them. I also know Lin Lavery and know that Lin has strong beliefs and believe that she too has the town's well being at heart in the decisions that she has and will make. I hope that Lin will continue to be a leader in the town.

On Election Day, however, no one can vote for two first selectmen. You can only vote for one.

With the considerations I have set forth above, I will be casting my vote on Election Day for Peter Tesei. As a resident of Greenwich, it is my privilege to do so.

Stepping Up To Reduce Energy

The Ashforth Co., a Stamford commercial real estate firm, will be the first in Fairfield County and one of the first in New England to take on an international challenge to reduce energy consumption.

The Building Owners and Managers Association, or BOMA, created the Market Transformation Energy Plan and 7-Point Challenge in July 2007 to challenge companies to reduce energy consumption in commercial buildings by 30 percent by 2012.

In the first steps toward meeting the requirements, Ashforth has started to purchase 20 percent of the energy needs for Greenwich Plaza, a 315,000-square-foot complex in Greenwich, from renewable sources.

A new chiller installed at the plaza will save about $40,000 annually in energy costs, according to company officials.

She'll be back: Sternberg takes medical leave

Greenwich Time - Superintendent of Schools Betty Sternberg is taking a medical leave of absence from her job starting Monday, the district announced yesterday.

The medical reasons were not made public, although district officials said Sternberg, 58, told them she will be fine and expects to return to work in a couple of months.

"Dr. Sternberg has indicated that she plans to return to work in mid-August," Board of Education chairman Nancy Weissler said in a statement the district released yesterday. "The Board has extended its best wishes to Dr. Sternberg for a successful resolution of her medical issues."

Sternberg declined to discuss her medical situation. "I appreciate everyone's good wishes," she said. "I have every expectation that I will be back in mid-August."

Last year, she wrote an opinion editorial in which she talked about living cancer free since being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001.

Sternberg held a staff meeting yesterday where she sought to reassure her colleagues and told them her absence would only be temporary, officials said.

"She's assured us that she will be returning," said Deputy Superintendent Kathy Greider who will assume the reins in Sternberg's absence.

Greider, who began her career as a first-grade teacher at Dwight Elementary School in Hartford, later promoted to principal and then lead principal for the Hartford district, has worked as Greenwich's deputy superintendent since last year.

Greenwich Time - The auction would have taken place today at Town Hall. But unlike previous years, when the tax collector placed legal notices in the newspaper with the list of properties for sale, Caravella never publicly announced that there would be an auction.

The town has yet to auction a single property in the seven years since Caravella first started threatening homeowners with an auction, because the owners forked over the amount owed by a last-minute deadline each year.

Body dump: Man faces new charge

Prosecutors yesterday brought a charge of felony murder against a Bridgeport man accused of plotting to kill a 49-year-old Bronx, N.Y., resident, alleging he wielded a gun to rob the victim and helped leave his body on a backcountry road this winter.

In a hearing yesterday, Assistant State's Attorney Maureen Ornousky, the prosecutor in the case, told Judge Martin Nigro she had brought single counts of felony murder, first-degree kidnapping, and first-degree robbery against Larry Corbett in the January killing of George A. McPherson, whose body was found by Greenwich Police the morning of Jan. 14 with multiple gunshot wounds to his chest.

Prosecutors allege that Corbett, 36, of 385 Harral Ave., the Bronx, used a firearm to kidnap and rob McPherson while taking part in the murder, Ornousky said after the hearing. She declined to provide further details about Corbett's alleged role in the crime.

"We found enough evidence to bring these charges," she said. "I think Greenwich Police did a fantastic job investigating this case."

Parents oppose reusing modular

With a week to go before the Board of Education decides whether the mold-infested Hamilton Avenue School modular building should be remediated and reused, some parents are lobbying educators to reconsider their options.

The modular could be used by Glenville School students this fall while their school begins renovation.

"I just think we're rushing to get it done," Frank Carbino, a Glenville School parent, said of the decision-making process. "We're not doing any justice to the kids."

Carbino belongs to a chorus of parents who are opposed to reusing the modular building, particularly after what Hamilton Avenue's students went through. Students, who had spent three years there without access to a gymnasium or cafeteria, were evacuated from the modular building in March because of mold.

"We've already seen Hamilton Avenue go through this, we need to learn from it," Carbino said, adding that even if the mold is remediated, the site would lack a gym and cafeteria.

The Board of Education is set to decide Thursday whether it will reuse the modular or pursue the other option, which would be to take over the Western Greenwich Civic Center and build a new small modular......

Has Mr. Curtis been drinking a little too much of Betty "You Can Trust Me" Sternberg's Kool Aid?

Here is an interesting question for Mr. Curtis.

Why was it okay For Greenwich School Architect John Brice to stick his hand inside the enclosed parts of the building, and then report to the Greenwich Time that he touched what "appeared" to be part of a vapor barrier?

But it is not Okay, for the Hamilton Avenue's Independent Environmental Expert to stick his hand in the same place and just take an air sample.

If Nancy "This Is Happening On My Watch" Weissler, the chairman of the education board, won't let an Independent Environmental Expert take an air sample in the same place that A Board Of Education Architect handled contaminated material, then how could a parent even consider placing a small child in that environment.

There Was no problem reported at all when John "School Board Paid" Brice, AIA reached inside and manhandled the contaminated construction materials, but if an Independent Environmental Expert want an air sample, then the school board claims that modular classrooms are going to potentially suffer honorific amounts of contamination and cause remediation costs to sky rocket?

The only reason Hamilton Avenue Parents are not allowed to independently test the contaminated modulars is that their are a bunch of high paid failed school administrators who are afraid of loosing their jobs.

Unfortunately, at the Greenwich Board Of Education the wants and needs of high paid failed school administrators come before the wants and needs of small children.
