Shabbat Parashat Ha'Azinu
September 8, 2010
Teaching by Rabbi Mitch
rabbimitch@templesholom.com

The midrash teaches us that two thousand years ago Rabbi Eliezer stood before the Holy Ark and offered 24 prayers on behalf of the community so that the long drought of rain might end.

Although Rabbi Eliezer was a great rabbi, God didn't answer the prayer.

Rabbi Akiva went before the Holy Ark and repeated Rabbi Eliezer's prayers.

Akiva, however, concluded by proclaiming: Avinu Malkeinu; our father, our King; we have no ruler other than you. Avinu Malkeinu; our father, our King, have mercy on us for Your sake!!"

With the conclusion of Akiva's final words the rains began to fall.

Avinu Malkeinu; God is both parent and ruler. God is love and law. God is kindness and responsibility. God is acceptance and judgment.

We stand before God this New Year and wish to access God's forgiveness and mercy, but, we also need to renew our commitment to taking full responsibility for our choices in life.

Each day that we are privileged to wake up; we receive our new page in the Book of Life. What shall we write? Let's begin with the words and prayerful intention: "Avinu Malkeinu."

In the Book of Life and blessing, peace and prosperity, may we and all of God's people, be inscribed for a good and peaceful life.

L'Shanah Tovah Tikatevu!!

Rosh Hashanah marks beginning of new year

Rosh Hashanah occurs on the first and second day of Tishri. In Hebrew, Rosh Hashanah means "head of the year." Rosh Hashanah is commonly known as the Jewish New Year. There is one important similarity between the Jewish New Year and the American one -- many Americans use the New Year as a time to plan a better life, making "resolutions."

Likewise, the Jewish New Year is a time to begin introspection, looking back at the mistakes of the past year and planning the changes to make in a new year.

One of the most important observances of this holiday is hearing the sounding of the shofar in the synagogue. A total of 100 notes are sounded each day. The blowing of the shofar symbolizes three different expressions of the human spirit and denotes faith.

The shofar goes back to the time when Abraham was ready to sacrifice his only son Isaac at G-d's behest. At the last moment the Almighty ordered Abraham to substitute a ram to test and educate him. A popular practice of the holiday is Tashlich (casting off). We walk to flowing water, such as a creek or river, on the afternoon of the first day and empty our pockets into the river, symbolically casting off our sins.
