Jewish Cuba: A Spiritual, Historical and Cultural Journey.

In a country once home to as many as 15,000 Jews, Cuba's Jewish population is now down to an estimated 1,500. But with strong-willed leaders and financial assistance largely from Jews in North and South America, Cuba's Jewish community is hanging on.

Why a Mission to Cuba?

Temple Sholom will team up with The JDC (Joint Distribution Committee) for this mission.

Since 1991, The JDC has helped to provide food and medicine to the Jewish community; organized a non-sectarian medical consultation and training program; and worked to reconnect the community to its Jewish roots through Sunday school classes, study groups, and communal holiday celebrations.

Last year, Rabbi Mitch as well as several Temple Sholom congregants helped to fund the over 400 weekly Shabbat dinners provided to the Jewish Community in Cuba. It is Rabbi Mitch's goal to be able to support this critical program again this year.

Because of missions like ours, the Cuban Jews are able to survive. In addition to our support, we will bring with us much needed supplies, such as over the counter vitamins, and other things we take for granted here in the U.S.

03/26/12 Greenwich Congressman Jim Himes: We need a real, smart budget

reelect

Dear Friends,

I'm still new to politics, but I have learned at least one thing: there are very fewContribute cliffhangers on the floor of the House of Representatives. Crafting a fair and thoughtful plan for fiscal responsibility will not happen on the floor of the House. Improving our system of education; developing, at long last, a forward-looking national energy policy; and preserving the basic decency that says no to casting our senior citizens into poverty or withdrawing their access to health care do not simply happen on the floor when the House finally votes on a comprehensive plan.

It happens right now. It happens because you support thoughtful, independently-minded candidates that win and go to Washington. Or you don't, and they lose, and we all get the America described in loving detail by the Republican presidential candidates. A world in which if you're not fortunate, you're on your own. If there's mercury in the air, arsenic in your water, or landmines in your mortgage, sorry, you're on your own.

We need to elect a Congress that will put the nation on a long-term path toward fairness and fiscal responsibility. Can you help with a contribution of $50, $100, $500 or even more?

Last week, Congressman Ryan released the House Republican budget. His budget does three basic things: increases spending on defense and security, cuts taxes for the most fortunate Americans, and devastates Medicaid, Pell Grants, investment in highways and railways, and just about every other non-defense program. You know I use words advisedly, and I chose the word “devastates.” That is not the future most of us envision for ourselves and our kids. It's certainly not the future that American statesmen past, Democrats and Republicans, fought for.

The truth is, this is not about the floor of the House, or even really about what happens on November 6 of this year. It's about what you do now to determine what happens on November 6 and on the floor thereafter.

Will you contribute to help me speak to your friends and neighbors throughout 2012?

Sincerely,
Jim
