07/31/10 Did You Ever Wonder How Greenwich Billionaires Could Sit Back And Turn A Blind Eye To Blind Eye To The Poor School Children At Ham Ave School

New Study Finds The Rich Horribly Stingy When It Comes To Charity

Studies come and go, but a new psychological study from the University of California Berkeley has found that 'class' (wealth, one's perception of social standing) and charity are inversely related.

You'd think that the 'higher class' would be less interested in collecting a small bit of money from a university experiment, but researchers found otherwise:

The Economist Reports:

To start with, these volunteers were asked to engage in a series of bogus activities, in order to create a misleading impression of the purpose of the research. Eventually, each was told he had been paired with an anonymous partner seated in a different room. Participants were given ten credits and advised that their task was to decide how many of these credits they wanted to keep for themselves and how many (if any) they wished to transfer to their partner. They were also told that the credits they had at the end of the game would be worth real money and that their partners would have no ability to interfere with the outcome.

A week before the game was run, participants were asked their ethnic backgrounds, sex, age, frequency of attendance at religious services and socioeconomic status. During this part of the study, they were presented with a drawing of a ladder with ten rungs on it. Each rung represented people of different levels of education, income and occupational status. They were asked to place an “X” on the rung they felt corresponded to where they stood relative to others in their own community.

The average number of credits people gave away was 4.1. However, an analysis of the results showed that generosity increased as participants’ assessment of their own social status fell. Those who rated themselves at the bottom of the ladder gave away 44% more of their credits than those who put their crosses at the top, even when the effects of age, sex, ethnicity and religiousness had been accounted for.

BAN PAY TO PLAY CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS (bridgeportroundup.blogspot)
Just as corporate lobbying corrupts the legislative process, the scramble for government contracts corrupts the executive branch and its agencies.
Connecticut has seen multiple pay-to-play scandals in recent years where campaign contributors illicitly received jobs and no-bid contracts.
Similar scandals have enveloped public officials in New York, California, South Carolina, Illinois and other states across the country.
A number of states have taken action to assure greater accountability in the public contracting system through common-sense solutions:
Campaign Contributions by Contractors:
Seven states currently have some form of pay-to-play contracting law to bar companies bidding on contracts from making campaign contributions to government officials.
Tightening Contracting Standards:
The tighter the standards for the bidding processes and the work done, the less likely incompetent or corrupt companies can buy contracts with campaign contributions. Campaign Contributions By Contractors Corrupt Elections
Democratic gubernatorial candidate and former Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy is the King Of Pay To Play contributions that prevent "clean elections."
Dan Malloy has for years fueled his political ambitions with donations from people doing business with the city of Stamford.
State elected officials cannot take contributions from state contractors, but it is legal and common at the municipal level politicians to swap contracts for campgain donations.
Over the last six years Dan Malloy's bids for re-election and for governor has brought in huge political contributions from over 25 contracting entities doing business with the City of Stamford.
Dan Malloy should know better, because he was the subject of a contract-steering probe prior to his 2006 bid for governor.
Rather than correct his ways Malloy continues the same reckless behavior.
Connecticut Needs A Governor With No Strings Attached
In 2003, the Chief State's Attorney's Office opened an investigation into allegations that Malloy, who was first elected in 1995 and left office last year, helped award city jobs to contractors who worked on his home in the late 1990s.....
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Dannel Malloy , a participant in the state's new public campaign financing program, while recently predicting his election, said "the people of this state will know that their government belongs to them -- not to someone's bank account and not to a bunch of special interests." Proponents of public financing, such ...
