Read How Sleezy Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg Ripped Off Cameron And Tyler Winklevoss of Greenwich

Mark Zuckerberg, the 23-year-old founder and chief executive of Facebook, launched the phenomenally successful social-networking site while he was a sophomore at Harvard. Facebook's forerunner was the somewhat more risqué Facemash, a Harvard version of Hot or Not. Facemash paired random pictures of Harvard undergraduates and invited users to vote on who was more attractive. Setting up Facemash required Zuckerberg to hack into protected areas of Harvard's computer network so he could copy and incorporate dormitory ID images from Harvard's Kirkland, Eliot, and Lowell houses. In response, Harvard's disciplinary administrative board placed Zuckerberg on academic probation.

While he was assembling Facemash, Zuckerberg kept an online journal, and like most college students, he didn't think very hard about who might end up reading it. Now a full-fledged tycoon, Zuckerberg has long since taken his journal offline. But a choice excerpt has been repatriated to the Web by 02138, a magazine directed at Harvard alumni. In the journal (see below and Page 2), Zuckerberg calls one fellow student (name redacted) a "bitch," admits he's "a little intoxicated," and ponders whether he should pair certain photographs from the Kirkland House facebook with "pictures of farm animals." Then he gets to work procuring online copies of student photos: "Let the hacking begin."

This and other documents potentially embarrassing to Zuckerberg that 02138 has also posted online form the basis of an article by Luke O'Brien titled "Poking Facebook" in 02138's November/December issue.
Facebook has filed two court motions to compel 02138 to remove the documents from its Web site. "If you're interested," advises executive editor Richard Bradley, "read these things now."

O'Brien's piece focuses on a lawsuit filed against Zuckerberg by founders of the rival site ConnectU. In the lawsuit, ConnectU's three founders, two of whom are Cameron And Tyler Winklevoss of Greenwich, allege that Zuckerberg stole programming codes from their site to create Facebook. The ConnectU founders were seniors at Harvard when Zuckerberg was a sophomore, and they approached him to work on the project with them. Zuckerberg spent some time on it but never completed the work. Instead, he launched Facebook. In a petition to Harvard's administrative board, the three upperclassmen alleged that Zuckerberg stalled them while he incorporated their ideas into Facebook. Zuckerberg replied to this accusation with indignation (Pages 3-5), stating at one point, "I don't have much time to spend fending off peoples' claims to work which is clearly my own." The "ad" board ruled in Zuckerberg's favor. In a deposition for the ConnectU lawsuit (Page 6), Zuckerberg credits an editorial in the Harvard Crimson with inspiring him to develop Facebook's privacy controls.

November 27, 2007 Dock owners agree to deal - Greenwich Time

A group of property owners with docks on the Mianus Pond will be allowed to keep the structures if they agree to safety inspections under a policy approved yesterday by the Board of Selectmen. The policy requires approximately 100 dock owners to get safety permits for the structures from the town's building inspection office, as well as separate environmental permits from the Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Agency....

11/26/07 Will babies die? Will people explode in flames? Greenwich Hosptial doesn't seem to think so.

Anticipating that greater numbers of residents will suffer circulatory problems as the town's senior population grows, Greenwich Hospital is seeking the state's permission to establish a $1 million therapy service that eases blood flow by increasing oxygen levels.

So-called "hyperbaric oxygen therapy" could serve as an effective treatment for diabetes patients and others who are not responding to traditional antibiotics, said Quinton Friesen, the hospital's senior vice president and chief operating officer.

"The hyperbaric program is for patients who have deep ulcers or major wounds that are not healing under normal circumstances, and with this particular therapy, the data indicates that a patient can recover much more rapidly," Friesen said.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is defined by the Undersea and Medical Hyperbaric Society as the intermittent administration of 100 percent oxygen inhaled while in an enclosed system at a pressure greater than sea level. The increased pressure changes the normal cellular respiration process and ultimately increases tissue oxygenation, stimulating the growth of new blood vessels.

Greenwich Hospital is seeking to purchase two oxygen chambers from Anaheim, Calif.-based Sechrist, for $267,000, according to hospital spokesman George Pawlush. The hospital also expects to pay $775,000 in construction costs for the program, Pawlush said.

November 20, 2007 BET panel mulls project rules - Greenwich Time

Members of the Board of Estimate and Taxation introduced a number of key oversight measures last night that they said the town should adopt to ensure future construction projects finish on time, a move following the delayed Hamilton Avenue School opening. The BET Audit Committee is recommending that future building projects of at least $5 million be required to have a project manager or owner's representative to oversee their progress, control costs and head-off delays.

November 20, 2007: Inspectors detail Benoit actions - Greenwich Time

Fire Marshal Joseph Benoit several years ago ordered an end to a plan to perform fire inspections on all buildings on Greenwich Avenue, a fire inspector testified yesterday. The initiative was meant to end the high volume of fire calls and related fire code violations on the street, which were monopolizing the time of firefighters and inspectors, Fire Inspector James McDonald said.

Rec fees going up for residents

“For 6-year-old kids who go every day, an increase from $1 to $2 is a lot”

Starting next year, residents will pay more to ride a ferry to Greenwich's islands and to play a round of golf, while non-residents will pay less to enter town beaches.

Following debate on a handful of individual fee increases, the Board of Selectmen yesterday unanimously approved more than 60 new rates that the town Department of Parks and Recreation will begin charging Jan. 1.
The department generates about $3.5 million in annual revenue by charging people for an array of services, including renting tennis courts and beach lockers, hosting birthday parties at a skatepark and placing advertisement signs on a golf course.

Like an old thoroughbred awaiting a veterinarian's nod to race another season, an aging Greenwich ferry needs approval from both the U.S. Coast Guard and municipal finance officials to continue carrying hundreds of smiling residents to town-owned islands.

Docked beside an industrial park in Bridgeport where Coast Guard officials will inspect her this month, the 70-year-old 'Indian Harbor' may require so much work on her steel deck and hull that it might not be financially prudent to invest in repairs, according to Fred Walters, superintendent of marine facilities for the Greenwich Department of Parks and Recreation.

11/13/07 - Veteran detective turns in his badge

Helping investigate crooked Greenwich financier Martin Frankel and helping to found a joint arson task force with the town Fire Department are two career milestones that stand out for Detective Edward Zack, he said yesterday.

A week before retirement from the Greenwich Police Department, the 51-year-old said he would miss the collaborative efforts with other current and retired town detectives which have helped break cases big and small.

'Over 29 years, you work with some unbelievable people who have great strengths in certain areas,' Zack said. 'Over time, as you go along, you wish a particular person was here because they were so good at something.'

Saturday the Greenwich native will work his last day for the town. In early December, Zack will continue his detective work as an inspector with the State's Attorneys Office in Bridgeport, investigating cases for prosecutors before they are taken to trial.

Zack said the desire for more professional satisfaction and additional income as his two teenage sons approach college age drove him to this decision.

'My personal feeling is I've been here 29 years and it's just not fun here anymore,' Zack said. 'You know when it's time to go.'

Detective Sgt. Thomas Kelly, Zack's supervisor, said his colleague's experience and skills as an arson investigator as well as a state-certified forensic computer investigator have been critical.
'His experience and knowledge in here will be greatly missed,' Kelly said. 'I wish him luck in his new job with the state.'

Zack attended Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, N.Y., graduating in 1973. His nephew, Thomas Zack, is a deputy chief at the Greenwich Fire Department.

'We have deep roots in town,' he said.

Zack said he and other detectives began investigating Greenwich financier Martin Frankel in 1997 following the suicide of Francis Burge, who was found hanging from the back deck of Frankel's Greenwich mansion.

Police efforts played an important role in Frankel's 1999 indictment and conviction in 2002 on federal charges of racketeering, conspiracy, securities fraud and wire fraud for defrauding $200 million from insurance companies.

'We knew right away after the suicide it was not a normal situation and something was wrong with Marty Frankel,' he said. 'We did what we could to pursue it.'

In March 2002, as Danbury Police searched for 13-year-old Christina Long, Zack performed a forensic analysis of Dos Reis' computer, which helped Danbury Police determine that the Greenwich man had met with the eighth-grader the night she disappeared, he said........
