06/16/10 US Congressional Candidate Rick Torres: Israel fighting for its very survival

Dear Editor,

Imagine, if you will, living in a neighborhood where all of your neighbors hate you. They routinely walk through your yard and many throw rocks through your windows. You have one loyal friend in your life but he lives a couple of towns over and, though he used to visit and give you a chance to sit on your porch and enjoy the fresh air -- because there is strength in numbers -- he rarely visits anymore.

You try to live your life. You go to the coffee shop but people still scorn you. You hire a police officer to make sure that the people walking through your yard are not carrying rocks. You don't stop them.

You just want to make sure that they don't throw rocks through your windows. Occasionally you have to take action against a neighbor who bursts into your living room and smashes your TV. It's not that they want to steal it -- they just don't want you to have it.

Then, yesterday, the insult of all insults: That good friend of yours from a couple of towns over comes to your neighborhood ... but he doesn't come to see you. He stops next door and drops off a cheesecake to the guy who lives there -- the guy who throws the most rocks at your windows. It's not any cheesecake, though, it's a huge Godiva chocolate cheesecake in a beautiful gold box with a hand-tied ribbon.

How's that make you feel?

Israel has been on the front lines of a holy war, waged by her neighbors against the world since the nation's founding in 1948.

Israel has endured more relentless attacks than any other nation on earth. Her Muslim neighbors vow to never recognize her right to exist, let alone the right of her citizens to move safely through their lands.

Recently there was controversy over the Mavi Marmara incident. In short, Israel has made a decision that requires Gaza-bound ships put into a nearby Israeli port, submit to inspection, and have the cargo delivered by land, at Israel's expense, to its destination. It's not a terribly onerous blockade. It doesn't prevent any legal cargo from entering Gaza -- just the rocket launchers and bomb components that are used to kill Israel's citizens.

In February, Jim Himes signed on to a letter with 52 of his colleagues in the House of Representatives. In response to that letter, President Obama signed an Executive Order earmarking $20 million U.S. taxpayer dollars to "aid in the resettlement of Gaza refugees."

Recently he announced that an additional $400 million will go to the Palestinian Governing Authority to aid in a "humanitarian crisis" ostensibly created by the blockade. The president recently remarked to CNN's Larry King that "Israel's got a legitimate concern there. On the other hand, you've got a blockade up that's preventing people in Palestinian Gaza from having job opportunities and being able to create businesses and engage in trade and have opportunities for the future."

The president is wrong. The blockade does nothing of the sort.

In a year of record budget deficits, unemployment and foreclosure, we are abandoning Israel in order to support a "humanitarian crisis" halfway around the world. That "crisis" is "caused" by an isolated nation imposing a blockade so mild that it has them paying to deliver cargo across land to followers of Hamas who would not allow the Israelis the chance to breathe the same air? Our Congress is out of control and way off the mark.

Imagine again that the neighborhood is the Middle East and that you are Israel. The neighbors are the surrounding Muslim countries, governed by Sharia law. The rocks are bombs and that loyal friend is the United States. Your former best friend has given Hamas $420 million dollars at the urging of Jim Himes and 52 other congressmen and they are mad at you for attempting to protect yourself from being blown up. You can either fight for your life or roll over and die.

How does that make you feel?

- Rick Torres

Mr. Torres, of Bridgeport, is a Republican candidate for Congress seeking to take Greenwich resident Jim Himes' seat in the Fourth Congressional District.

11/08/09 Greenwich Resident Ned Lamont: Entrepreneurship to Aid Connecticut Economy?

By Matt Kiernan, CCSU Recorder

http://centralrecorder.com/2009/11/08/entrepreneurship-to-aid-connecticut-economy

CCSU adjunct political science professor Ned Lamont’s lecture Thursday focused on entrepreneurship and how it can contribute to Connecticut’s job market and economy.

“There’s nothing better than starting a small business or working on a small business,” said Lamont to an audience of faculty, students and members of the New Britain community in the Marcus White Living Room.

Lamont recalled the ingenuity of Eli Whitney, who lived in the state and invented the cotton gin. Lamont says Whitney modernized manufacturing and sees no reason why such progress can’t be recreated in today’s economy.

“You have to ask, ‘what happened? Why we are slipping?” said Lamont.

What is required of the state, according to Lamont, is bringing in more jobs and make it appealing for college graduates to remain in Connecticut. If there is an attractive job market, students will be less likely to move into states such as New York and Massachusetts.

“If we don’t get our act together, we’re going to be in a recession a lot longer,” said Lamont.

Lamont believes that Connecticut hasn’t been making smart, long-term investments that will improve itself. He praised President Barack Obama for his “political entrepreneurship,” which he cited the president’s stance on energy and healthcare.

“He is making long-term investments that can make great advances for this country,” said Lamont.

Lamont recalled bringing his son recently to the Department of Motor Vehicles and observed that the procedures are incredibly inconvenient, given the amount of people crowded in the building. He wondered why it wasn’t possible for people to accomplish DMV transactions online, which could be facilitated by technology.

He said that technology is the key to creating more jobs and that although some jobs may be lost in an area due to a rise in technology, a greater number of jobs would be created in another.

Public transportation is a possibility for bringing in more money into the state. The idea of creating a train line to run from Springfield, Mass. to New Haven would provide added revenue to the state and lower costs for travelers.

Making investments in higher education is another important step to improving Connecticut’s economy, according to Lamont. More accessible education means a smarter and skilled workforce.

“They’ve got to be able to think and create and that’s the most important thing,” said Lamont.

11/05/09 Associated Press: Greenwich Resident Ned Lamont Considering Gubernatorial Run

HARTFORD — Ned Lamont, the Greenwich businessman who lost to U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman in the 2006 election after beating him in the Democratic primary, announced Wednesday he is exploring a run for Connecticut governor.

Lamont, 55, was a political unknown when he put $16 million of his own money into the race to unseat Lieberman with the help of fellow Democrats who shared Lamont’s opposition to the Iraq war. Lieberman later won re-election to his Senate seat as an independent.

Lamont told supporters Wednesday in an e-mail and on his Web page that he is considering a run for governor after hearing from residents that Connecticut “is not living up to its potential and too many of our families are still being left behind.”

He said he will decide in early 2010 whether to declare his candidacy.

Without mentioning Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell by name, he said the state’s chief executive “is simply not getting the job done.”

Lamont said after his 2006 defeat that he had no plans to run for public office again, though he added at the time, “I never rule anything in or out.” He later went on to become co-chairman of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign in Connecticut.

Lamont said Wednesday that his background as an entrepreneur and employer would be helpful in Connecticut as its leaders struggle to retain jobs and businesses. “Let’s face it. I’m outside the political class. I bring a different perspective and background,” he said.

The Quotes:

"I've written probably 100 letters in my life putting my name to it," Rep. Alfred Camillo said.

"Whatever the circumstance is behind how it came to exist or be sent, it's inappropriate on the part of a government official to take part in the creation of a letter that deals with him in any way if that letter is not going to have his name on it," caid Thomas Mellana, editorial page editor for Greenwich Time, "I don't doubt that this type of thing happens from time to time. But when we become aware of it, it would be wrong of us to run the letter, which is why we decided not to."

WORSHIP @ home & on the road: Who's The Boss?
by Dan Macaulay

Whether you are a worship leader who travels and ministers itinerantly or one who leads primarily in one place there is one all-important concept you absolutely need to understand:
Authority.

Failing to understand the biblical concept of authority, especially as a worship leader, I believe, is a death-wish for your ministry; and poison in the place(s) you minister. How many church splits and conflicts have been rooted in worship leaders failing to submit to the vision of their pastors? Some would argue theologically that Lucifer himself is the precedent for this: Article: Is Lucifer Leading Worship In Your Church?

Here are the basics: The entire basis & root of sin is rebellion to God's authority. And as John Bevere writes so well in his book Under Cover (Highly recommended reading): "We cannot separate our submission to God's inherent authority from our submission to His delegated authority. All Authority originates from Him!" (U.C. pg.11) "For there is no authority except from God. Therefore whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgement on themselves." (Romans 13:1-2)

So here's what this means for you and me: The authority of the pastor you serve under, whether you're visiting or resident, traces back to Jesus himself. .....

Today's Greenwich Time Letters To The Editor
Letters frin Readers - Gay marriage no threat -

Gay marriage law only added to basic rights

To the editor:

The April 27 letter to the editor ("Tampering with foundation," Greenwich Time), was written with such rage and hatred that the author apparently had no time to include any reason. I feel obligated to respond to the writer's hysterical claims.

To begin, the letter says, "The very definition of marriage -- the foundation of families and the cornerstone of civil society -- has been tampered with by the state of Connecticut." This is absolutely false. What S.B. 899 did was guarantee equal access to civil marriage for all Connecticut residents.

What this bill did not do is force any house of worship to offer religious marriage ceremonies to anybody. In fact, the bill was specifically amended to make sure that no religious organization would have to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies if it did not wish to (although it is still not clear to me why any organization that benefits from the tax dollars of all citizens has a legal right to discriminate against any one of them).

To state Rep. Lile Gibbons, who said that her "generation is not ready to vote 'yes' on this": Please take credit for your own intolerance, and do not blame it on an entire generation of Connecticut residents, many of whom have long been denied the dignity of equal access to the benefits of citizenship because legislators whose salaries they pay were not "ready" for equality under the law.

The only people for whom this is a "life-changing piece of legislation" are the thousands of couples who have been denied access to the rights they are entitled to under our constitution. The writer said that this legislation "will affect each and every person of our great state" and that this law will "injure marriage and families." I submit that if one's marriage is threatened by legislative language coming out of the Connecticut General Assembly, that individual is not qualified to lecture the rest of us on the sanctity of that institution.

I look forward to the day when such anger and rage is a relic of a less enlightened past.

3/04/09 Greenwich Resident Ned Lamont tight-lipped on possible Senate bid

Asked whether he’ll run for U.S. Senate again, Greenwich Democrat Ned Lamont told members of Democracy for America at the Silver Star Diner in Norwalk Wednesday night “when is a door not a door?”

”(But) I’ve really gotten involved in the whole (state) budget thing,” Lamont said. “And the politics is, even if you leave the door open a little bit, all of a sudden everything you said is made (serious).”

Lamont, who shook up Connecticut politics by defeating incumbent Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman in the 2006 Democratic primary, spoke to more than 60 Democrats about President Barack Obama’s first six weeks in office, the economic stimulus package and Hartford lawmakers’ efforts to tackle the state deficit.

“It’s really important … that we’re not afraid to talk about spending, that we’re not afraid to talk about labor reforms and we’re not afraid to talk about taxes,” Lamont said.

Democracy for America, the grassroots political organization launched by former Democratic president candidate Howard Dean, invited Lamont to the Connecticut Avenue diner.

“Everyone here worked on Ned’s campaign,” Kate Tepper, DFA chairwoman for Fairfield County, told The Hour. “We’re hoping that he will run (again), but he hasn’t said yea or nay.”

Lamont, although winning his party’s endorsement in August 2006, lost to Lieberman 450,844 to 564,095 in the general election in November that year.

John Hartwell, the Westport Democrat who served as Lamont’s campaign treasurer, said Lamont’s primary election victory in 2006 “sent a shock through the whole country” and made Barack Obama’s victory in last year’s presidential election possible.

1/29/09 Greenwich Post: Raising a glass: Democrats toast to victory, change

Photo: Charlene Abdal, assistant to the first selectman, gives Ned Lamont a hug during the Democrats’ celebration Saturday

by Ken Borsuk, Greenwich Post

L’escale restaurant was wall-to-wall Democrats Saturday night and the party faithful was in the mood to celebrate.

At what Selectwoman Lin Lavery pledged would be the first annual “Greenwich Celebrates Change” event, more than 280 people arrived to mark what they hoped was a new era in Washington after a successful fall for local Democrats. Not only did President Barack Obama become the first Democrat presidential candidate to win the town’s vote since Lyndon Johnson did in his 1964 landslide victory, but former Democratic Town Committee Chairman Jim Himes defeated 21-year incumbent Republican Christopher Shays to become the congressional representative from the 4th District.

But those in attendance stressed the night was not just about last fall’s victories and that people from all political persuasions were in the crowd.

“People are out here tonight to celebrate change and to raise a glass to the President of the United States and to Jim Himes,” Ms. Lavery told the Post. “We couldn’t be more thrilled. People worked very hard to make it happen. It’s a wonderful moment in history.”

Democratic Town Committee Chairman Dave Roberson called the crowd “amazing” and praised the work of Cathy Farricker and Laura Grad for making the event happen. Upon his arrival, Mr. Himes joked to Mr. Roberson that Greenwich Democats had “gone upscale” since he left town..

..Ned Lamont, who challenged and defeated Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Ct.) in 2006 in the primary, spoke at the event as well, as did state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal who said the Greenwich victory for President Obama is “the beginning of a trend.”

Mr. Lamont, a former selectman, joked that being a Greenwich Democrat used to be like rooting for the Chicago Cubs but Saturday the party was turning people away at the door because there wasn’t room for them….

Greenwich Resident Lamont thinks Lieberman will join GOP

Ned Lamont, the Greenwich Democrat who challenged U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman two years ago, believes his former opponent will soon join the Republican minority in Congress.

Lamont declined to say Thursday whether the junior senator from Connecticut and self-described “independent Democrat” should be punished for backing U.S. Sen. John McCain’s presidential bid.

“My sense is he’s psychologically moving into the Republican column,” Lamont said. “I think he’ll probably jump.”

Lamont, an entrepreneur and millionaire, challenged Lieberman’s support for the Iraq war and won the Democratic primary in 2006.

But Lieberman formed a third party, Connecticut for Lieberman. With support from Republicans and unaffiliated voters, he won the general election.

Lamont had expected Lieberman would make peace with state Democrats.

“I thought he’d go to all the towns and say ‘Hey look, I know the war has separated us but on all the other big issues I’m with you,’ ” Lamont said.

But Lieberman’s work for McCain and running mate Sarah Palin proved where his true loyalties lie, Lamont said.

“It used to be just about foreign policy, but it’s now on a wider variety of issues,” Lamont said.

Lieberman spoke at the Republican National Convention and campaigned in battleground states for the ticket. He was not shy about criticizing Democrat Barack Obama on the stump or before media pundits, despite the fact he mentored Obama in the Senate and Obama had urged state Democrats to re-nominate Lieberman in 2006.

Lamont chaired Obama’s campaign in Connecticut, where the Democrat beat McCain, 930,424 to 584,725.

He said it was gratifying to see the majority of Americans vote for another anti-Iraq war candidate.

During their campaign in 2006, Lieberman branded Lamont as a representing the far left he feared was taking over the Democratic Party, particularly on foreign policy and defense.

“Hearing Obama talk about foreign policy and Iraq and tough-minded diplomacy, (it) was gratifying to see that’s the mainstream of American foreign policy these days,” Lamont said. “They tried to make us into some lunatic fringe, but I think two years later you see where the country’s headed and the world’s headed.”

One possible punishment for Lieberman is being stripped of his chairmanship of the Senate Government Services and Homeland Security Committee.

As speculation about Lieberman’s fate increased Wednesday, the senator’s office sent out an e-mail announcing he had helped secure more than $25 million in security grants for Connecticut in fiscal year 2009.

But Lamont said Connecticut has nothing to fear if Lieberman loses clout with the Democratic majority in Congress.

He said the state still has U.S. Sen. Christopher Dodd and, with Democrat Jim Himes’ defeat of long-time U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays, an entirely Democratic delegation in the House of Representatives.

“Chris Dodd endorsed Obama early. So we have a pretty senior guy who has the president’s ear,” Lamont said. “I think our state’s going to do just fine and Senator Lieberman is irrelevant to that calculation.”

Lieberman’s term is not up for another four years and there has been some speculation he will not run again.

Lamont said he would consider running again for the Senate seat. “That’s a long way away,” he said. “We’ve got many bridges to cross between now and then.”
