Cleaning up our energy policy: In the Gulf and Moving Forward

Like my fellow citizens, I have been deeply saddened, angered and immensely frustrated by the tragedy in the Gulf caused by the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explosion and the disastrous BP oil spill. Our hearts go out to those most directly affected on the Gulf Coast. This tragedy is of great concern for all Americans, and particularly those living in coastal communities everywhere.

Despite continuing efforts to reduce the flow and capture more of the oil, thousands of barrels are still spilling into the Gulf each day.

This is not a natural disaster. It is a man-made disaster - a human, environmental and economic catastrophe that should not have happened. To my mind, we shouldn't be drilling at depths or in places where we lack the ability to quickly resolve any problem and stop any leak.

Right now, the largest cleanup effort in the nation's history is underway while the work continues to reduce the flow and stop the leak. BP has agreed to pay all the costs for these efforts, and for the people, property and resources impacted by the spill. We need to make sure that BP is held to that promise.

At the same time, we need to find out exactly how and why this happened. The Justice Department has launched an investigation into the oil rig explosion, and an independent commission has been named to determine what steps need to be taken to ensure that this never happens again. As we've witnessed during the recent financial crisis, excessive risk-taking for short-term gains without effective oversight can cause severe economic harm. The same holds true for shortcutting safety issues in our energy sector.

America's economic, national, and environmental security hinge on our ability to lead the way in developing and using clean energy. The country that leads this transition will lead the world economy. The research, development, and manufacturing associated with making that future will create millions of jobs and make our existing jobs more secure.

By using cleaner, safer fuels, we will prevent horrible disasters like the one we are now experiencing.

And eliminating our dependence on foreign oil will mean we no longer send billions of dollars to dangerous countries in the Middle East. We must get ourselves to a point where we can operate the country on American-made energy; we are not safe if another country holds the power to shut down our cars, trains, lights, and computers.

All of this points to an ever more urgent need to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and move ahead with sustainable alternatives toward a safe, clean energy future. The time to create that future is now.

Thank you,

P.S. I hope you'll help me continue working to protect the environment and improve our energy security.

06/15/10 Dan Debicella: Greenwich Resident Jim Himes Soft On Supporting Israel

Dear friends,

Recent reporting in the Jewish Ledger on June 9th indicates just how unwilling Jim Himes is to take a strong position in support of Israel. The full story can be found at www.jewishledger.com.

It is clear that we need a Congressman who is unequivocal in his support for Israel. Jim Himes says he supports Israel, but then is unwilling to take a strong stand to support our ally when they are most in need. The United States needs to support Israel as they work to secure their borders and stop weapons from reaching terrorist groups like Hamas. Fairfield County deserves a Congressman who will speak strongly and clearly for our allies in Israel.

These are the contrasting statements reported in the Jewish Ledger:

“Israel is our good friend and our only long term ally in a dangerous part of the world. As Americans we do not rush to judgment before we have the facts. As tragic as the situation in the Mediterranean is, I urge all parties involved to do all they can to reduce tension and to allow the facts to be examined.”

"The United States needs to back Israel as it tries to secure its borders against terrorist groups like Hamas. They have a right to stop ships to ensure no weapons are being moved into the Gaza Strip. Israel is trying to reach out to moderate Palestinians to reach a lasting peace, yet the extremists in Hamas continue to try and pick a fight with Israel. I firmly believe the U.S. should stand with our allies in Israel and promote the removal of terrorist organizations like Hamas from power."

I will continue to advocate for the Israeli people and for their right to defend themselves from extremism. You can help me today by making a contribution of $25, $50, or $100 or by volunteering with the campaign. Together we can defeat Jim Himes and restore common sense to Washington.

All my best,

Dan Debicella

06/15/10 In 4th District Congressional Race, Rick Torres Goes Against The Grain

Rick Torres may be considered an anomaly by some. Not only is he a Republican in a city where Democrats outweigh the GOP faithful, he's a Latino Republican.

On a warm spring morning, Torres, 51, sits at a table outside the Harborview Market, the business he owns in the neighborhood where he lives, talking about the life experiences that shaped him into the staunch conservative he is today.

Torres is working hard to secure the Republican nomination -- there are six candidates -- to unseat Democrat U.S. Rep Jim Himes in the Fourth Congressional District.

It would be easier, especially in Bridgeport, to be a Democrat. Hispanics tend to vote Democrat. And, in fact, at one point Torres himself was a Democrat.

Not any more. Not after living across the street from the P.T. Barnum housing complex in Section 8 housing -- housing subsidized by the government -- after he father moved the family back to the U.S. from Cuba in 1967.

"I believe in me, I believe in you," Torres said.

"I don't believe in the government. The problem with the government is they don't get it right. I want to fix it and the only way to fix it is to get government out of it."

He wants, he said, to "liberate the people living in public housing ... It was intended to help, but it does the opposite. The children don't see anyone who's never been on welfare. Everyone's been on welfare so long, that's the norm for them."

Torres said he thinks there should be a homesteader plan--if you've lived in public housing for 10 years or more, it's yours.

"Get them off welfare, let them earn as much as they can, and keep as much as they can," he said.

"Open the doors of education. That's what you and I take for granted. That's foreign to them. That's just the way it is and there's no other way to say it better."

He admits that some of his stands are not always popular with his customers, but that doesn't bother him, Torres said, as he points to a man sitting inside.

"That guy, he's a Socialist." Going against the grain, the accepted way to do things, the easiest way, is not something new for Torres.

The GOP candidate for mayor in 2003, he was ousted in 2007 as chairman of the city's Republican Town Committee after he urged GOP members to switch to Democrat to vote in a primary for mayoral candidate Chris Caruso. Torres said it was the best way to get rid of an entrenched Democratic machine.

As a high school senior, he was offered full college scholarships, so long as he played football or basketball. At age 18, though, his shoulder was shot, his knees were shot, his back hurt. Torres just wanted an education.

He founded himself at the Milford Academy, and bartered the carpentry skills he'd acquired at Bullard -Havens Technical High School to pay his way at the post grad prep school rather than play football, which would have also gotten him a free ride.

Torres found himself the winner of the popularity polls at Bullards-Havens, where he captained the basketball team, played football and was elected as the prom king.

He's also found himself ostracized, and was ready to quite Milford Acemdy after two month when none of his fellow students, all much wealtheir than he was, would even speak to him.

He's had success in business-his Harborview Market received outpouring support from the Black Rock community when he needed zoning variances to stay open. He's also had disappointments-a deal that would have brought a car manufacturer to the city fell through.

Today, Torres said, he is comfortable speaking to any sort of group.

"It's really cool. I can give a talk at the highest level of corporate office," he said, "and then I can go into an inner-city black church and give it again and then I can go into a Hispanic church and give it in Spanish."

Torres said he'd talked to millionaires in Greenwich, and students at Housatonic Community College.

"I give the same talk about small government and free markets," he said. "It's really a decent message."

Until the last election, the district was held by Christopher Shays, who was defeated by Jim Himes.

"I'm not a Chris Shays style representative," Torres said. "I'm not a moderate. I'm a conservative through and through."

He knows that means the Republican machine is supporting Rep. Dan Debicella, who follow the Shays ideology.

But, Torres says there are many people in Fairfield County who agree with him and will support him in the upcoming Republican primary.

His goal is to raise "at least" $300,000 for the primary.

And he has no doubt that not only will he win a Republican primary, he'll win back the seat for the party.

Greenwich Senior Citizens Are Hungry Angry And Unhappy

Dirty Work at the Senior Center

There are days when your scribe is ashamed to be a citizen of the Town of Greenwich. Today is one of them.

For this morning Marva, one of the Town's most dedicated and hard-working employees, who for many years has prepared and served many tens of thousands of tasty home-cooked meals to the folks at the Senior Center, was summarily fired. Laurette Helmrich and Sam Deibler marched into the kitchen together and demanded her keys. She was told to put her personal effects into a cardboard box, and to leave the building and not come back.....

Now Three Days Later The Greenwich Time Publishes This Article

Seniors shocked by chef's firing

The lunchtime regulars at the Greenwich Senior Centerwere surprised to learn Monday that the facility's longtime cook had been let go.

Town and Senior Center

officials wouldn't say why Marva Savariau had been fired, citing confidentiality issues surrounding personnel matters. The move comes as Morrison Senior Living, which provides meals at the town-owned Nathaniel Witherell nursing home, prepares to take over the Senior Center lunch program on July 1.

Sam Deibler, director of the town's Commission on Aging, said he could not comment on whether Savariau's dismissal was related to the switch.

Savariau could not be reached for comment Monday.....

.....Deibler addressed the lunch crowd in the center's dining room before the meal was served Monday to confirm that Savariau had been let go, and everyone was shocked, said one member, who declined to give her name.....

....Izzo then drafted a petition asking for Savariau to stay, which was circulated by other members and delivered to First Selectman Peter Tesei......

...Deibler said last month that while the contract with Morrison Senior Living added $70,000 to the Senior Center's budget for the next fiscal year....

....Starting July 1, the price of a full lunch at the Senior Center will rise from $3 to $4.
