Greenwich independent booksellers look to broaden customer base
Independent bookstores have become an endangered species across the country, following the advent of Internet booksellers and the proliferation of large national chains.....
.....With the Borders Books on Greenwich Avenue shuttering its doors last month, Greenwich's two remaining booksellers, both independents, say they're proud of their longevity and viewing the closure as an opportunity to broaden the loyal customer bases that have kept them in business through the years.

Diane Garrett, owner of Diane's Books, a 3,000-square-foot family bookstore just off Greenwich Avenue at 8A Grigg St., said she's sorry to see any establishment that supports reading leave town. She's ready to absorb its customers, however, taking out a recent newspaper ad welcoming Borders customers and hiring an extra salesperson.

Board of Ed contractors reviewed
Budget officials have asked the school district to take a closer look at how it spends money on consultants and private contractors to identify potential savings in the education budget.
The move comes as members of the town's finance board are concerned about the reliance of some departments on often-costly independent contractors when funds are expected to grow increasingly scarce.

Faced with declining revenues from conveyance taxes, building permit issuance and bank interest, the town must come up with $5 million in savings for 2009-10 -- and curtailing the use of some contractors in education and other areas may help, these officials say......

03/29/08 - Good News! - Since When Is A Tax Increase Good News For The Single Family Home Owners Of Greenwich?

It's Time To Once Again To Beat The Press:

Superintendent Betty Sternberg spins it. Communications Director Kim Eves delivers it and of coarse, the Greenwich Citizen runs it through the spell checker before publishing it.

Objective Reporting Paragraph Of The Day:

"On a parallel track over at the Board of Education in the Havemeyer building on Greenwich Avenue, the school budget was shaping up for months and then gone over with a fine-toothed comb. And, after all those processes, the final product was fine-tuned."

This Is Complacent Reporting At It's Worse:

And there is not one word in the story about unnecessary and high expenses that were caused by Betty "You Can Trust Me" Sternberg's incompetent screw ups.

Nothing about how failed school administrators increased the single family home owners tax bill by
KNOWINGLY allowing the contaminated modular classrooms to fester for over one year.

Nothing about the tax ramifications of the unnecessary diaspora of 400 small school children.

It looks like the Greenwich Citizen is totally unaware of the tax consequences of the Hamilton Avenue School cover up has on this
record-breaking $371 million budget.

he committee so far includes eight voting members, including Board of Education Vice Chairman Leslie Moriarty and Board of Estimate and Taxation member William Kelly, a former school board member and supporter of the project. Volunteer firefighters don't want to lose rank

Greenwich Time Reporter

A proposal to promote eight new lieutenants this year to provide better leadership and supervision at the Cos Cob and Byram fire stations has drawn concerns from volunteer firefighters' chain of command, town officials said.

In recent Board of Estimate & Taxation Budget Committee hearings, volunteer firefighters objected to the proposal, concerned that the lieutenants would be inserted above volunteer company chiefs during firefighting operations on each 24-hour shift, Fire Chief Peter Siecienski said...

... Jerry Cutrone, president of the Greenwich Volunteer Firefighters Association and a volunteer at the Sound Beach Volunteer Fire Department declined to comment on the proposal.

Cos Cob Volunteer Fire Chief Thomas Anderson, co-president of the Greenwich Volunteer Fire Chiefs Association also declined to comment....

...The new lieutenants would be promoted from within the department, requiring about $118,000 in additional salary for the new officers.

Siecienski said if approved the positions would create better accountability and safer firefighting efforts in those two neighborhoods.

"It strengthens our health and safety initiatives for the two areas of town that don't have lieutenants seven days a week," Siecienski said. "Those two areas don't get the same level of protection and we are looking to get those positions in place."

Currently the town charter places volunteer district chiefs second only in command to the chief of the fire department.

11/02/07 Greenwich Citizen is the Second Town Paper to Endorse Peter Tesei

Greenwich Citizen became the second town paper to endorse Peter Tesei for First Selectman. Citing Tesei's years of service in the Representative Town Meeting (RTM), the Board of Estimate and Taxation (BET), and in the financial arena, the paper stated that his skills will "help to keep Greenwich on an even fiscal keel." It pointed out that "under his leadership as BET chairman, the Town has the lowest property tax rate in Connecticut, with modest annual increases in the 3.4 percent range."

The paper also took notice of Tesei's "cool head" and "ability to build consensus" - attributes that it believes are of "inestimable value leading a municipal government." In contrast, Tesei's opponent, Frank Farricker, was described as "strident on occasion" and "a bit too argumentative".

The paper said it believes Farricker has "overstated some of the problems facing the Town."
