Greenwich Power Restoration - State of Emergency Cancelled

This is Captain Mark Kordick of the Greenwich Police Department with an important follow-up announcement from the Town of Greenwich Emergency Operations Center.  As most of you are aware, at approximately 10:00 a.m. this morning all of Greenwich lost electrical power when a large electrical transmission line failed.  The failure occurred as the result of damage sustained in yesterday's severe thunderstorm.

As of 5:30 p.m., this evening, repairs effected by Connecticut Light and Power emergency line crews have restored power to 94% of all CL&P customers in Greenwich.  Virtually all of the customers who currently remain without electric service are customers who have been without power since yesterday due to smaller localized outages caused in yesterday's storms.  These smaller repairs will remain on-going throughout the evening until all customers are restored.  CL&P is estimating a 99% restoration rate within a few hours.

With over 90% of electrical service currently restored, the Office of the First Selectman has ordered the local State of Emergency, which had been declared at 10:15 this morning, to be lifted effective at 8:00 p.m. tonight.

Greenwich's Public Safety Agencies would like to extend our gratitude to all of the Townspeople and other citizens who's cooperation helped us manage yesterday's storm event and today's Townwide power outage without loss of life or significant injury to any person.  During emergencies, your attention to messages like this one is vital and we thank you for your caution and cooperation.

Town of Greenwich Power Emergency

This is a message from the Town of Greenwich, Connecticut Police Department .

Yesterday's storm damaged a major transmission line responsible for the delivery of electric power to the Town of Greenwich.  The damaged transmission line failed completely at approximately 10:00 am this morning, Monday August 6th, 2012.  In response to the townwide power emergency, the First Selectman declared a state of emergency at 10:15 a.m. today and the municipality has opened it's Emergency Operations Center.  At this juncture, Connecticut Light and Power representatives have advised the Town that repairs will take 6 to 8 hours.  To avoid further power problems, CL&P must restore power to the Town by sections in a process which may take an additional 2 to 4 hours.

During the power outage, many traffic control signals may not be operating.  Metro-North trains are currently not operating west of the Cos Con RR station.  Residents are encouraged to use extra caution when traveling.  Any business or residence that utilizes the municipal sewer system can help us by conserving water to the greatest extent possible to reduce the strain on the municipal sewer pump stations and treatment plant.

In the event of an emergency, please contact police headquarters by dialing 911.  An additional message will be broadcast via this system if power is not restored in the anticipated timeframe or if other important information becomes available.
