02/19/09 Greenwich Fire Department Wins Battle Of The Badges

Joan Irish, CEO of the Greenwich chapter of the American Red Cross, honored the Greenwich Fire Department as the leading emergency service group at the Battle of the Badges Blood Drive in December.

This special drive celebrated our emergency responders -- Greenwich Emergency Medical Service (GEMS), Greenwich Police Department, and Greenwich Fire Department.

First Selectman Peter Tesei presented a plaque commemorating the Fire Department's achievement and Paul Sullivan, CEO of the Connecticut Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross, thanked all participants for their life-saving donations.

Paramedics and firefighters responded to a chemical spill at Western Middle School early yesterday morning after a jar containing a deer fetus preserved in formaldehyde and water was knocked over, officials said.

While reaching inside a cabinet, a student knocked over the jar, causing it to crack and the liquid to leak, officials said. Firefighters, medics and the district's science safety officer responded to assess the situation at the school shortly after 10 a.m....

...students complaining of symptoms similar to that of formaldehyde exposure were taken to Greenwich Hospital, where they were treated and released, officials said.

Fluid spill at Western sends two students to hospital

A Formalin spill today in science classroom 22 at Western Middle School resulted in two students being taken to the hospital as a precaution, according to a Greenwich Public Schools press release.

A student reached for something in a cabinet and accidentally knocked a jar containing the fluid (a Formaldehyde solution significantly diluted with water) into another object in the cabinet, thereby cracking the jar containing the Formalin.

Safety protocols were immediately deployed. Students and staff were removed from the classroom; the fire department was dispatched to the school, and the school district’s Science Safety Officer was consulted. The situation was assessed, and the material was cleaned using appropriate safety measures.

The cleaning protocol includes cleaning with a special solution three times, a PH swab over all surfaces that came in contact with the solution to detect any residue, air monitoring and ventilation. Deputy Fire Chief Keith Millette has determined that the room is now safe for occupancy.

The school nurse and paramedics examined every student and staff member involved. The two students taken to the hospital had complained of symptoms that may have been related to exposure to the Formalin. Both students have been treated and released.

Let us look at formalin.

Formalin is a saturated solution of formaldehyde, water, and typically another agent, most commonly methanol. In its typical form, formalin is 37% formaldehyde by weight (40% by volume), 6-13% methanol, and the rest water. A quick glance at any commercially available formalin product will confirm these numbers. Formaldehyde provides the disinfectant and bacteriacide/germacide effects of formalin. The water content of formalin provides a dilution of formaldehyde. And the methanol content stabilizes the naturally chemically unstable formaldehyde compound.

Four grand marshals, a line of Irish bagpipers, cups of green ginger ale, plates of buttered Irish soda bread and plenty of twinkling eyes and smiling faces were on hand for yesterday's annual St. Patrick's Day parade at The Nathaniel Witherell.

People, wheelchairs and walkers packed both sides of the parade route as bagpipers made their way into the nursing home's social hall. In the front of the room were the grand marshals, Alice and Eddie Collins, Kathy Kavanagh and Mary McHugh, who also are the four oldest Irish residents at the nursing home....

02/27/08 - School Board Coverup? - Are Displaced Hamilton Avenue Students Getting Rained On?

The itsy bitsy children went in the classroom.

Down came the rain, and washed the children out.

Out came the sun, and dried up all the rain

And the itsy bitsy children suffered from mold infections again.

Hamilton Avenue School Parents are saying that thier children's temporary classrooms are leaking water. The problem is particularly bad after last weeks heavy snowfall that closed Greenwich Schools.

Memo To: School Superintendent Betty Stienberg

Water is leaking into one of your classrooms.

Parents have been complaining to school personell, but feel that thier complaints have fallen deaf ears.

Parents started making complaints late last year about the water leaking.

But, your failed administration and do nothing administrators have ignored these concerned parents.

Why won't the very high paid Betty Stienberg looked into the water problem?

If water was comming into Betty's office, it would be
fixed immediately.

Many Hamilton Avenue School parents think they being ignored by arrogant high paid school administrators.

Some parents feel that School Administrators are Covering up maintenance issues and they are not being told the truth about the school administrator's failures.

These parents want the truth and the answers about why thier children's classrooms are
leaking water all over the place.

Parents say that the School System has been in serious violation of fire codes and that has not been addressed the Board Of Education.
