01/14/09 Press Release From Jim Himes: Haiti

As you know, Haiti has been hit by a catastrophic earthquake. The extent of the devastation is not yet known, but loss of life estimates have ranged from tens of thousands to a half a million. The first 72 hours are critical to stopping that toll from rising. The President has directed our government to lend our full support to Haiti in assisting with the search and rescue effort. That effort is taking place with many military and other assets now fully engaged.

At times like this, I know that you, like me, are consumed with the desire to help. At this point, giving cash support to the organizations that have assets on the ground in Haiti is the very best thing you can do. That, and keeping our brothers and sisters in Haiti in your thoughts and prayers.

There are many organizations working hard in Haiti. I'd like to highlight four that are in, or have close ties to Fairfield County:

Red Cross:

There are two direct and secure ways you can donate to the Red Cross' Disaster Relief Fund: online at http://american.redcross.org/

Or, text "Haiti" to 90999 from your mobile phone and give $10 to the American Red Cross.

Americares: Based in Stamford, has sent $3 million in medical aid to Haiti.

Donations may be made online at http://www.himesforcongress.com/page/m/6bc3b78a/309d0026/69bf7b57/166e838e/2856615378/VEsE/

Save the Children:

Based in Westport. Donations may be made online at http://www.himesforcongress.com/page/m/6bc3b78a/309d0026/69bf7b57/166e838d/2856615378/VEsF/

Partners in Health: Has 120 doctors and 500 nurses active at its sites in Haiti.

Donations may be made online at http://pih.org/

Finally, if you have a missing family member please call the State Department hotline at 1-888-407-4747.

Sincerely,

Jim
