Dear Greenwich Roundup,

Topix has apparently evolved its notion of community policing of hateful speech by making people pay to remove defamatory posts.

The Greenwich Time should be thanking their lucky stars (if they have any) that they stopped using topix.

Kentucky Attorney General Addresses Topix Website

Do you ever fear getting a subpoena to reveal the identities of your contributors?

Name Withheld By request

COMMENT:

The rule at Greenwich Roundup is that we publish who a contributor is unless they tell us not to.

While complying with subpoenas isn't unusual for newspapers and some bloggers.

However, the ease with which an ID can be acquired should be made clearer to those using comment boards.

News organizations everywhere are untangling these issues.

A few times a month Greenwich Roundup gets threatened with lawsuits.

Sometimes big corporations actually go out wasting money on lawyers in an attempt to intimidate Greenwich Roundup.

Once Greenwich Roundup traded angry e-mails with Hearst Corporate Lawyer Ravi Sitwalla because a former Greenwich Time Editor named Bruce Hunter wanted posts about his poor performance removed from this blog.

The Greenwich Times threats of a SLAPP lawsuit (Strategic lawsuit against public participation ) were soon dropped as Greenwich Roundup stood his ground and published Hearst Newspaper letters And emails at this blog.

Even under subpoena Greenwich Roundup would try to inform a commenter before releasing information about him or her, something the Greenwich Time might not do.

Greenwich Roundup has been subpoenaed for information about anonymous posters, who people felt they had been defamed and criminal cases where someone may have witnessed a crime.

Greenwich Roundup would always try to give time to let the poster go to court and quash the subpoena.

There may also be instances where Greenwich Roundup would determine that the commenter was acting as a news source and Greenwich Roundup would elect to fight to protect the person's privacy.

Internet culture of free-wheeling commentary, and the results can be unpredictable.

Greenwich Roundup is a free speech purists who think the internet is a fundamentally different medium and that the old rules — that is, vetting letters to the editor — should not be applied to comments.

If you limit these comments like the Greenwich Time does, then you're engaging in censorship.

At Greenwich Roundup Or At The Greenwich Topix message board, you will find that those judged guilty of violating a poster's privacy can be sentenced to serious digital scorn.

A good example is Kurt Greenbaum, an editor at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch who tipped off the employer of an anonymous commenter who posted an offensive statement on the paper's Web site.Greenbaum posted a question last November on a blog on the Post-Dispatch site asking, "What's the craziest thing you've ever eaten?" One commenter, according to a post Greenbaum later wrote, replied with a vulgarity. Greenbaum reported he deleted the post, but it popped up again from the same user. This time he used the Internet protocol address to contact the place where the comment originated, a school. Officials tracked down the poster, an employee, and confronted him. The man resigned, Greenbaum reported in a blog post titled: "Post a vulgar comment while you're at work, lose your job."Hundreds of comments excoriating Greenbaum were posted on the newspaper's site — as well as on Greenbaum's personal blog posts on the topic.

"Did I overreact?" asked Greenbaum in a later post. "Maybe I did. I am constantly frustrated by the difficulty of dealing with this kind of language."

Some lament civility's demise online.

Others like Chris Tolles the CEO of Topix.com, which posts between 120,000 and 150,000 comments a day, says....

"Enabling people to say what they will makes for a better society in the long run, because it means people have to have a thicker skin and it means a lot of things come out that wouldn't have come out."

As a matter of full disclosure, Greenwich Roundup has been the editor of the Greenwich Topix board for years and he has never banned any commenter or deleted any comments.

However, other Topix moderators have banned and deleted persons and what they have said on the Greenwich Topix message board.

When the Greenwich Time used the Topix message boards, Greenwich Roundup was horrified at how the news paper banned and censored members of Greenwich society who disagreed with the newspaper and the powers that be.

Greenwich Roundup knows some may not like what he writes.

However, Greenwich Roundup is not going to stop commenting online and defending the rights of others to express their own controversial or silly opinions.

Whether people want to hear it or not, a commenter does have the constitutionally protected right to say something really stupid.

Further, Greenwich Roundup does not believe that topix users can get posts removed for $19.99.

Should Glenville Principal Marc Marc D'Amico Be Able To Pay $19,99 A Revise History By Removing This Post At Topix....

At Topix You Can Still Read All 85 Comments In This Post, That Is Until Principal D'Amico Pulls Out His Credit Card.

But The Real Question Is Why Has Hearst Newspaper Editor David McCumber Sanitized And Protected The Powers That Be, By Removing The News Articles About Marc D'Amico Suspension From The Greenwich Time Website.

02/13/10 Comment About Greenwich Resident Richard "The One-Man Wrecking Ball" Blumenthal Has Cost Taxpayers 18 Million At The Greenwich Topix Website

Topix Greenwich
Greenwich News - February 13, 2010
Greenwich Resident Richard "The One-Man Wrecking Ball" Blumenthal Has Cost Taxpayers 18 Million (greenwichroundup.blogspot)
$18 million verdict: black eye for Connecticut's Blumenthal Point of Law Richard Blumenthal, the Connecticut Attorney General who is now running for U.S. Senate, has long been a subject of fascination to this site because of his remarkable success in pushing businesses around. Many other state AGs have been known to grandstand on occasion, take overreaching legal positions, try cases in the press, use aggressive litigation tactics, and so forth, but few if any have combined these practices into a smoothly humming machine the way Blumenthal has. Over his career, despite -- or perhaps because of -- these propensities, Blumenthal has enjoyed an almost unremittingly good press, and all the favorable coverage has presumably contributed to his high standing in voter popularity polls. A trial outcome late last month might do something to change that. In a verdict the Hartford Courant called "stunning", a jury awarded $18 million to Gina Malapanis, a computer firm owner who had been the target of a lengthy and aggressive Blumenthal crusade. Malapanis's firm, Computers Plus, had sold computers to the state government for years, and when state officials decided that the machines they were getting did not match the specifications they thought had been agreed on, they protested. Blumenthal proceeded to sue for $1.75 million, and send out aggressively worded press releases. More dramatically, police arrested Malapanis at her Hebron, Ct. home., on criminal charges that were later dropped. Comment

Greenwich BOE Hands Over Two Anthony Byrne Memos (greenwichroundup.blogspot)
Click To Enlarge BOE Internal Memos About Ex-Greenwich Board Of Education Facilities Director Anthony Byrne Greenwich Board Of Education Hands Over Byrne Memos In An Effort To Avoid A Lawsuit From The State of Connecticut - Freedom of Information Commission Sidney, Sidney, Sidney....... If Greenwich Roundup said it once he must have said it a hundred times. "The Coverup Is Always Worse Than The Crime" Dr Frued and a bunch of failed administrators have been saying that there was nothing unusual with Anthony Byrnes departure. Mr. Byrne simply decided to voluntarily go in administrative leave for three months and then retire early from the Greenwich Public School System. Dr. Freud wants everyone to believe that everything was done in an orderly and smooth fashion and Mr. Byrne gave proper notice to him. But Susan Wallerstein's July 4th memos seem it indicate that the were not so smooth and planned out in advance. As you can see from the first memo, on January 4th at 3:06 in the after noon Ms. Wallerstein informs all school principals and the BOE cabinet only that .... "...Byrne, will not be in this week." There is nothing mentioned about Byrne applying and going onto three months of administrative leave with $30,000 in pay. Apparently on January 4th, no deal had yet been made concerning Mr. Byrnes $30,000 Taxpayer funded vacation. More At Greenwich Roundup ..... 1 Comment

You Probably Wont See This Letter From The School Superintendent In The Greenwich Time (greenwichroundup.blogspot)
February 12, 2010 To The Greenwich Community: As part of the BET's annual budget review process, the Superintendent, Board of Education Chairman, and the BET Budget Committee met on Thursday for an in-depth, five-hour discussion of the schools' 2010-11 Budget request. The Greenwich Time chose to focus a front page article with a sensational headline on a two-minute exchange that took place at the Thursday meeting and thus missed the essence of the conversation onresource allocation and accountability. I was asked to comment on the comparison of our buildings to those in other districts with which I am familiar. My frank response was that overall our buildings are not as well maintained or up to date as those in some other districts. I stated that while much is provided for in the way of technology, furniture and supplies, the physical buildings are not what I would have expected in a community such as Greenwich. While I acknowledged the success and importance of tax rate stabilization, I questioned whether the current practicesfor funding were serving the schools' needs. Had the discussion continued I would have applauded the Town'sspending of over $60 million on two new schools, Glenville and Hamilton Avenue, and the millions of dollars spent for repairs and maintenance over the last several years. The BET, RTM and the First Selectmen have to make tough financial decisions. Allocating resources requires planning and priorities. My perspective by the nature of my responsibilities is focused on the schools. I will always strongly advocate for our children. As I frequently state to the Board of Education, "I propose, but you dispose." So, it is at the Town level too. I meant no criticism, despite the paper's headlines, and I look forwardto my continued cooperative working relationship with everyone in our great Town. Sincerely, Dr. Sidney A. Freund Superintendent Greenwich Public Schools Comment

02/12/10 You Wont Read This In The Greenwich Time: Greenwich Resident Richard "The One-Man Wrecking Ball"Blumenthal Has Cost Taxpayers 18 Million

$18 million verdict: black eye for Connecticut's Blumenthal
Point of Law

Richard Blumenthal, the Connecticut Attorney General who is now running for U.S. Senate, has long been a subject of
fascination to this site because of his remarkable success in pushing businesses around.

In a verdict the
Hartford Courant called "stunning", a jury awarded $18 million to Gina Malapanis, a computer firm owner who had been the target of a lengthy and aggressive Blumenthal crusade.

Malapanis sued claiming that Blumenthal had violated her rights and ruined her business in part through false allegations. It's hard from a distance to sort out the details, but it sure sounds as if the jury wasn't buying Blumenthal's defense. Besides the
Hartford Courant account, details on the verdict also appeared in the Waterbury Republican-American, a paper critical of Blumenthal, which called him a "one-man wrecking ball".

Connecticut political columnist Don Pesci
sees a wider pattern, and in earlier posts offered plenty of details about Blumenthal's distinctly aggressive pursuit of a Bethel tea and herbal product vendor and an Enfield wood-pellet company.

Reading through the stories, you do wonder whether at some point they might even begin to affect Blumenthal's political untouchability.

02/13/10 HOLLYWOOD EAST: A Greenwich Producer And A Screenwriter Bring "Blood Done Sign My Name” To The Big Screen

North Carolina as It Was, Split and Seething

New York Times

By GODFREY CHESHIRE

For Robert K. Steel, the re-evaluation of his placid recollections of the white-picket-fence world of Durham, N.C., accelerated in the summer of 2005 when he read Timothy B. Tyson’s “Blood Done Sign My Name.” That acclaimed book recounts how, in 1970, the author’s hometown, Oxford, N.C., erupted in racial turmoil after an all-white jury acquitted a white store owner and one of his sons of the murder of a young black man.

A former vice chairman of Goldman Sachs, Mr. Steel found Dr. Tyson’s work “fascinating and compelling,” he said in an interview in his office in Greenwich, Conn. Though he’d never had an itch for movie producing, he was so struck by the book’s cinematic potential that he urged it on a Greenwich acquaintance and fellow North Carolina native, Jeb Stuart, who has screenwriting credits on Hollywood action hits including “Die Hard” and “The Fugitive.” The result of their collaboration reaches theaters across the Southeast and in other major markets on Friday.
Mr. Stuart also found personal as well as cinematic reasons to connect with the material. Dr. Tyson, who was 11 in 1970, chronicles the struggles that his father, Vernon, a Methodist minister, faced in advocating civil rights progress to a conservative parish. (Vernon Tyson was effectively driven out of Oxford by the end of 1970.) Mr. Stuart’s father was a Presbyterian minister who faced similar trials in Gastonia, N.C.

When Mr. Steel and Mr. Stuart met with Dr. Tyson to discuss turning “Blood Done Sign My Name” into a movie, with Mr. Stuart as writer and director, the author was initially leery of turning over his work to a Hollywood filmmaker bearing the name of a Confederate general. (Mr. Stuart was nicknamed for, but not descended from, the rebel cavalry officer J. E. B. Stuart.) But the men soon discovered they agreed on what the movie should avoid.

“One of the goals was not to make ‘To Kill a Mockingbird,’ ” Mr. Stuart said in an interview at Mr. Steel’s Greenwich office.....
.....Dr. Tyson was happy to learn that he and Mr. Stuart both loathe movies like “Mississippi Burning” and “Ghosts of Mississippi,” in which conflicts between good and bad white people overshadow the actions of blacks.....
.....The sit-ins swept out of North Carolina and across the South in the spring of 1960, and there were practically no grown-ups in the United States who thought right away that it was a good idea, but the young people just did it anyway. Most Americans thought it was bad and crazy. In 1961 the Freedom Riders rolled through the region, criticized sharply by the Kennedy administration as well as the Southern politicians, denounced in emphatic terms by The New York Times, and three-quarters of Americans disapproved.....
....by 1970 much had not changed. In Oxford the movie theaters were still segregated. Downtown businesses sold to African-Americans but would hire them only as janitors. Public pools and recreation areas had been closed to keep them out. Thus, in May of that year, when a young black Vietnam veteran named Henry Marrow was beaten and killed on an Oxford street by three white men, an incident watched by several witnesses, the town was ready for an explosion. As the movie shows, the trial of two of the men was of intense concern to 22-year-old Ben Chavis (played by Nate Parker), a black Oxford native who had recently returned to teach high school after having become a civil rights organizer while in college in Charlotte, N.C.....
.....Dr. Chavis echoed remarks by Dr. Tyson in saying that he believes the struggles depicted in both the book and the movie are not particular to North Carolina or the region.

Malcolm X once said that the South is anything south of the Canadian border. On certain issues the whole country is the South.”....
