10/26/07 - Greenwich Time Endorses Tesei and Crumbine

Greenwich Time placed its support behind Peter Tesei and Peter Crumbine declaring that “a Tesei administration would hit the ground running at Greenwich Town Hall.” The editorial cited Tesei’s “years of experience in town hall government” and his reputation for a “cool head and compromise, both of which are useful in running a municipal government.” Greenwich Time agreed with Tesei’s view that overdevelopment is his top priority.

They stated their expectation that Peter Tesei will use “his background and abilities over the next two years to develop a multi-tiered approach to fighting commercial as well as residential overdevelopment in Greenwich, which threatens not only the character of town neighborhoods but the environment, and adds to already serious flooding problems.” The paper also emphasized that they ultimately “disagreed with Mr. Farricker’s assessment of the overall state of Greenwich”, and did not see the type of trouble that he sees.

10/23/07 - Probable cause hearing scheduled for murder suspect

Quote:

“We have a lot of questions about the timeline at the hotel”
Story:

STAMFORD - The state must prove it has enough evidence to charge a city man with murderfor allegedly stabbing his former girlfriend to death at the Sheraton Hotel.

The public defender for Juan Botello, 20, yesterday requested a Dec. 4 probable cause hearing at state Superior Court in Stamford.
Defendants charged with murder in Connecticut are entitled to such hearings, after which a judge must rule whether the state has enough evidence to press charges.

Botello, 20, allegedly killed Layla Banks, 21, an aspiring graphic designer who lived with her mother in Greenwich, after she rejected his attempts to rekindle their relationship, police and friends have said.

10/23/07 - Block grant plan approved

Quote:

“As usual, we found these grants to be well-researched”
Story:

The Representative Town Meeting gave its blessing last night to the town's Community Development Block Grant application for 2008, paving the way for 21 organizations such as Kids in Crisis and the Transportation Association of Greenwich to share $1 million in anticipated federal aid.
An advisory committee of community leaders recommended the organizations and programs to the RTM, which voted 179 to 0 with one abstention to authorize the first selectman to receive the grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The Board of Selectmen had already approved the list, which is broken down into public service programs and building rehabilitation or acquisition projects.
The Housing Authority of the Town of Greenwich is slated to receive $400,953 to replace the windows at the moderate income apartment complex McKinney Terrace II in the western part of town, the single largest grant recommended.....

10/22/07 - Interstate Bakeries lines up some post-Chapter 11 financing

Interstate Bakeries Corp. has an agreement with specialty lender Silver Point Finance LLC of Greenwich, Conn., that would provide up to $400 million in post-Chapter 11 financing.

Additionally, in a foreshadowing of a plan of reorganization, Interstate said it has an agreement with a group of pre-petition lenders holding 48 percent of pre-bankruptcy debt to convert $218 million of its secured debt into new debt and new stock to be issued upon a successful emergence from Chapter 11.

Interstate Bakeries proposes canceling its current shares and giving unsecured creditors, owed about $291 million, 25.9 percent of newly issued class B stock as well as the opportunity to obtain up to $50 million of the new common stock at a price that would be determined later.

This is the first time that Interstate has suggested that current shareholders will receive nothing under its reorganization. The news sent the company's stock, which has traded as high at $13 since its filing in September 2004, down as much as 85 percent to a low of 6 cents a share before closing at 15 cents a share.
