Blogger Not Guilty Of Threatening State lawmakers

Blogger Hal Turner, accused of threatening state lawmakers over plans to oversee church finances, is found not guilty....

...Turner, 49, of North Bergen, N.J., had faced a felony charge of inciting injury and a misdemeanor charge of threatening, and could have been sentenced to up to 11 years in prison if convicted.

He represented himself in the trial, portraying his prosecution as retaliation by the state for speech it did not like.
....

...
State Capitol Police obtained a warrant for Turner's arrest and he was taken into custody in New Jersey before he could go on his radio program the next day and give out the officials' addresses.

Hartford Superior Court Judge Carl J. Schuman allowed Turner to hug his mother, wife and son, who attended the trial, before being escorted back into custody....

...former legislator Andrew McDonald and Thomas K. Jones, an official in the state ethics office testified Thursday that Turner's blog post shook them.

"I interpreted this as people were going to be coming to my house in 24 hours with bullets and guns," Jones testified.

Turner, in an hour-long argument to the jury Friday, said, "The state is prosecuting me simply for uttering words and there's a problem with that, because in the United State of America people are supposed to be free to express their opinions."

He sought to undermine the charges by saying that releasing the addresses of the officials was not an act of physical force or violence....

...."Ladies and gentlemen, this whole case is a fraud," Turner told the jury. "I said some nasty things about some politicians and they are misusing the power of the state to throw me in jail. This comes down to whether or not we as Americans can say things about our government without going into a gulag. These are the kinds of things we used to hear about in the former Soviet Union."

God Bless America
Words and music by Irving Berlin

Let us swear allegiance to a land that's free,
Let us all be grateful for a land so fair,
As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer.

God Bless America,
Land that I love.
Stand beside her, and guide her
Thru the night with a light from above.
From the mountains, to the prairies,
To the oceans, white with foam
God bless America, My home sweet home.

09/18/11 Praise For Greenwich Library Staff For Efforts During Storms

On behalf of the Greenwich Library board of trustees and the board of the Friends of Greenwich Library, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the employees of the Greenwich Library (main library, Byram Shubert and Cos Cob branches) who once again stepped up to provide services to Greenwich residents who found themselves looking for that "port in the storm" following Tropical Storm Irene, much as they had done after the nor'easter of March 2010.

Once again employees shifted gears to accommodate the thousands of extra patrons who came in for electricity and Internet, a place to work, entertainment for children, cell signal to collect phone messages and email, etc. Additional chairs and tables were set up and power strips were added to make more locations available for charging all those ubiquitous devices upon which we all have come to depend. A new television in the Children's Room played movies, and wireless access was expanded near to capacity.

Greenwich Library had been scheduled to be closed from 5 p.m. Friday until Tuesday morning for Labor Day weekend. However, as the weekend approached with many residents still lacking electricity and Internet, a core group of library employees volunteered to work late Friday and all day Saturday to keep the main library open and serve these needs.

Greenwich Library management and staff have been working very hard to gauge and adjust to the growing and changing needs of our community. In the last 18 months alone, they have twice stepped up to support town residents in the wake of large storms, even as their own families and residences were similarly afflicted. Working on these boards, we know that we have great staff -- this past Labor Day weekend their efforts truly went above and beyond. We want to be sure that our staff knows that we truly appreciate their efforts. We also want the rest of the town to know how hard their library staff is working for them.

Jenny Baldock
Nancy Fertig

The writers are presidents, respectively, of the Greenwich Library board of trustees and the board of the Friends of Greenwich Library
