09/16/10 Dan Debicella's statement on President Obama’s visit to CT

E-Updates from the Dan Debicella for Congress Campaign September 16th, 2010
Debicella for Congress

My statement on President Obama’s visit to CT

"While we’re honored to have the President in Fairfield County, President Obama’s presence is yet another reminder of the failed policies his administration and Jim Himes have rubber-stamped. With 10% unemployment, a $1.4 trillion deficit, and no recovery in sight, Washington continues to let us down."

"As middle-class families struggle and look for real solutions, the President raises money in Greenwich to fund Democrat attack ads. Jim Himes may continue to defend the failed, tax-and-spend Pelosi agenda, but I will continue to campaign for a better way. My proposal for replacing the unspent stimulus funds with a payroll tax cut, a permanent extension of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, and a new federal spending cap will provide direct relief for Fairfield County families.”

Friends,

As President Obama is here in Connecticut raising money to fund the Washington agenda, please help us to do some fundraising of our own. Your contribution of $100, $500, $2,400 or whatever you can give will help me to defeat Jim Himes as he attempts to distract voters from his failed record on the economy with his negative advertising.

Thank you for all of your support!
-Dan

09/16/10 Greenwich resident Linda mcMahon: CT Senate Race Moved to ‘Toss Up’

In Case You Missed It

COOK: CT Senate Race Moved to 'Toss Up'

Connecticut Senate: A Slow, Steady Move To Toss Up

Cook Political Report

Thursday, September 16, 2010

The contest between Democratic Attorney General Richard Blumenthal and former World Wrestling Entertainment CEO Linda McMahon has been gradually closing over the past few months, and is now in single digits, according to some polls.

A Quinnipiac University poll (September 8-12 of 875 likely voters) gave Blumenthal a six-point lead over McMahon, 51 percent to 45 percent. They were statistically tied among independents, with Blumenthal taking 47 percent to 46 percent for McMahon, and among men where McMahon had a one-point advantage, 48 percent to 47 percent. Blumenthal enjoyed a 56-percent to 41-percent lead among women voters. Blumenthal's job ratings were 70-percent approve to 26-percent disapprove. As impressive as these numbers are, his ratings in January were 84-percent approve to 11-percent disapprove. Blumenthal's favorable/unfavorable ratings were 55 percent to 39 percent while McMahon's were 45 percent to 41 percent. This poll looks a lot different than a January Quinnipiac survey that gave Blumenthal a 41-percent advantage over McMahon, 64 percent to 23 percent.

Democrats countered the release of the Quinnipiac numbers with a survey conducted by Hamilton Campaigns for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee at the same time the Quinnipiac poll was in the field (September 8-12 of 800 likely voters). This poll gave Blumenthal a 15-point lead over McMahon, 54 percent to 39 percent. Blumenthal's job ratings were 70 percent to 27 percent, and his favorable/unfavorable ratings were 61 percent to 34 percent, which were higher than President Obama's 55-percent to 43 percent ratings. McMahon had a favorable rating of 48 percent and an unfavorable rating of 46 percent. Democratic strategists further argue that they've seen no erosion in Blumenthal's job approval or favorable ratings over the course of the last few months.

We don't doubt the Hamilton Campaigns' numbers; it is a respected firm with a solid track record. At the same time, though, we are aware of Republican polling that has the race in the high single digits, though neither the McMahon campaign, nor the National Republican Senatorial Committee has released a survey. And, when all the polling taken in the race is considered, it is clear that McMahon has made slow but steady and consistent progress against Blumenthal. According to the Pollster.com trend line, McMahon now trails the Attorney General by seven points, 43 percent to 51 percent, in all general election ballots tests conducted in the race.

Democrats' main argument against McMahon centers on professional wrestling, particularly its darker side that includes substance abuse and allegations of illegal steroid use. They believe that their case is bolstered by the premature deaths of three former wrestlers in the past several weeks. Democrats hit McMahon on wrestling almost daily and the media constantly grills her on the topic. They believe that it will be McMahon's undoing at the end of the day, particularly among women voters who make up a slim majority of the electorate. According to the Quinnipiac poll, Blumenthal's 15-point lead among women tends to support their argument.

Wrestling will remain a topic for the next seven weeks and eventually either Blumenthal or a Democratic independent expenditure campaign will start airing television ads devoted to wrestling. Still, given how omnipresent wrestling has been in the race for months, we are surprised that it hasn't done more damage to McMahon. While her favorable/unfavorable ratings are certainly higher than is desirable, she continues to make progress in the race.

Much of McMahon's progress can be attributed to her constant presence on the air with television ads that have been running for months across the state, including in the expensive New York media market. Not only will she remain on the air for the next seven weeks, but the campaign's buys are likely to increase. Blumenthal has run ads intermittently, though they've been more consistent over the past couple of weeks. The ads generally focus on his accomplishments, particularly when they impact average voters, and work to portray him as a fighter for Connecticut who is not afraid to take on big business. He has yet to take on McMahon, but that will undoubtedly change soon. President Obama is headlining a fundraiser for Blumenthal in the Nutmeg State today, which may signal the start of Blumenthal's attacks on the Republican.

Democrats believe that McMahon's saturation media effort and the pile of glossy brochures that have landed in voters' mailboxes will backfire as she suffers from overexposure. They also argue that the normally staid voters of Connecticut will ultimately decide that they can't support a candidate with roots in a colorful industry like wrestling. They say that ultimately voters' concerns about McMahon's record will trump any concerns they have about President Obama's agenda. This, too, might be true to a degree. The larger point, though, is that with seven weeks left to go, McMahon has made this a race and Democrats' best efforts to stall her candidacy have not worked. This, of course, could certainly change as they start airing negative ads against her, but for now McMahon is in the hunt, handing Democrats a race in an expensive blue state that they weren't expecting.

Again, we are not dismissive of the Democratic poll that shows the race at 15 points, but the Quinnipiac poll, coupled with the Pollster.com trend line and the Republican numbers we've seen, suggest a competitive race that is now up for grabs. As such, the race moves to the Toss Up column.

09/16/10 Reader submitted comment on "Dan Debicella Responds To Greenwich Resident Jim Himes...".

Kevin has left a new comment on your post "09/15/10 Dan Debicella Responds To Greenwich Resident Jim Himes...":

Oh Debicella - All you do is lie.

It's so disappointing.

The bill did not force Catholic hospitals to issue emergency contraception - the bill was a compromise that allowed a 3rd party to come in and provide it at the victim's request.

And Debicella does not believe that women should have the right to emergence contraceptives, ESPECIALLY rape victims.

When Debicella "defended" his vote on the rape bill he said: "On the rape bill all I voted against was allowing morning-after contraception to be issued to victims."

Yes...Jim is totally distorting your record.

Just Books is pleased to welcome Gale Steves, former editor of Home magazine, and an established authority on everything to do with the home, as she introduces her newest book, Right-Sizing Your Home: How to Make Your House Fit Your Lifestyle (Northwest Arm Press, $21.95). Steves takes them through the entire process of Right-Sizing: providing worksheets to examine the uses and requirements of space, dimension guides to illustrate different spatial arrangements within rooms, the right way to measure, how to create a floor plan, and even a clever use for old grocery bags. Additionally, there are tons of inspiring ideas, hundreds of products that can help readers Right-Size on any budget, and a comprehensive list of resources making it easy to find everything featured in the book--everything needed "to make your house fit your lifestyle." The National Association of Home Builders has recognized Steves' outstanding contribution to the building and remodeling field with a Certificate of Merit. THE LAST MAN ON THE MOUNTAIN

A Perrot Memorial Library & Just Books Event
Perrot Memorial Library, Radcliffe Wing
Old Greenwich, CT

Author Talk & Book Signing

Perrot Memorial Library and Just Books are pleased to feature Jennifer Jordan, who will be speaking about her latest book, The Last Man on the Mountain: The Death of an American Adventurer on K2, (W.W. Norton & Company, $26.95). This will be Jennifer's second visit to Perrot; she previously shared with fans her 2005 book, Savage Summit: The True Stories of the First Five Women Who Climbed K2, the World's Most Feared Mountain.

The Last Man on the Mountain is the untold story of Dudley Wolfe and America's ill-fated 1939 expedition to the roof of the world. Born into vast wealth, yet uneasy with a life of leisure, Dudley Wolfe, of Boston and Rockport, Maine, set out to become the first man to climb K2, the world's second-highest mountain, and in the opinion of mountaineers, an even more formidable challenge than Mt. Everest. Although close to middle age and inexperienced at high altitude, Wolfe, with a team leader, made it higher than any other member of the expedition, but couldn't get back down. Suffering from altitude sickness and severe dehydration, he was abandoned at nearly 25,000 feet; it would be another 63 years before Jennifer Jordan discovered his remains in 2002. In a story where The Great Gatsby meets Into Thin Air, readers follow Wolfe from the salons of Europe to the most forbidding landscape on earth. Jennifer Jordan is an award-winning author, filmmaker and screenwriter. She has twice lived at the base of K2.

DOUGLAS GLADSTONE
A BITTER CUP OF COFFEE: HOW MLB AND THE PLAYERS ASSOCIATION THREW 874 RETIREES A CURVE
A Bitter Cup of Coffee
Just Books
28 Arcadia Road, Old Greenwich, CT
Free and Open to the Public

Just Books is pleased to welcome journalist and author Douglas Gladstone as he introduces his first book A Bitter Cup of Coffee: How MLB and the Players Association Threw 874 Retirees a Curve (Word Association, $18). This painstakingly researched book by Gladstone examines the plight of 874 Major League Baseball players who played between 1947 and 1979, all with brief trials in the majors, careers figuratively just long enough to drink a cup of coffee. Since 1980, Major League Baseball players have needed one day of service credit for health benefits and 43 days of service credit to be eligible for a retirement allowance, but those former ballplayers who played during the 1947-1979 seasons were not included retroactively in the amended vesting requirement, and so receive no pensions for the time they gave to our national pastime. These men, the author suggests, have gulped bitter cups of coffee. In his careful examination of this issue, which includes many interviews with former players and some poignant stories of their plight, Gladstone asks his readers to examine our national relationship to sports and its heroes, as well as our relationships with those who precede us in the game of life. A lifelong baseball fan, Douglas Gladstone is a journalist by training, whose published articles have appeared in the Chicago Sun Times, Baseball Digest and the San Diego Jewish World, among others.

FERRAN: THE INSIDE STORY OF EL BULLI AND
THE MAN WHO REINVENTED FOOD

Ferran
Just Books
28 Arcadia Road, Old Greenwich, CT
Book Signing; Free and Open to the Public

Just Books is thrilled to welcome Colman Andrews, a Greenwich resident and acclaimed cookbook author and co-founder and former editor-in-chief of Saveur, as he introduces his latest novel, Ferran: The Inside Story of El Bulli and the Man Who Reinvented Food (Gotham, October 5, 2010; $28). No other chef in history has been interviewed, written about, and parsed more than Ferran Adrià. And perhaps no other chef has given of his philosophy, recipes and revolutionary techniques as freely. Award-winning food writer Coleman Andrews was given two years of unrestricted access to Adrià's El Bulli kitchen, dining room, Barcelona workshop, family friends and associates. The result is a defining and revealing portrait of the chef in a historical and culinary context that addresses both his genius and the salient criticisms leveled against him. FERRAN demystifies, exalts, and thoroughly examines the man known as "the greatest chef in the world." The El Bulli restaurant is located in the Catalan coastal hamlet of Cala Montjoi, near Spain's boarder with France. Each year, 8,000 lucky dinners from around the world are able to eat at the restaurant - another 1 million are turned away from the 30-course revolutionary experience. Dinner at the restaurant, with its year-plus wait list, is arguably the toughest reservation in the world to score. Coleman Andrews was the cofounder and a former editor in chief of Saveur, and is the author of four acclaimed cookbooks, including Catalan Cuisine, which introduced the now-trendy cooking of Catalonia, Ferran Adrià's home region, to American food-lovers. The recipient of numerous honors (including six James Beard Foundation awards), he was most recently the restaurant columnist for Gourmet. He divides his time between New York City and Connecticut.

Author Talk & Book Signing;

The Greenwich Library and Just Books are pleased to welcome award-winning author Mona Simpson as she reveals the secrets behind her most cherished work when she discusses My Hollywood (Knopf, $26.95), as part of the AuthorsLive@GreenwichLibrary.

My Hollywood delivers the story of Claire, a stressed classical composer and East Coast transplant living, like Simpson, in Santa Monica. The stay-at-home mom struggling with the duties of motherhood enlists a nanny, Lola, a 52-year-old Filipino mother of five. As Lola stabilizes the rocky household, a story of the upstairs competition for the best nanny and the downstairs competition for the best deal unfolds. My Hollywood tackles the modern issue of whether it is possible to buy love for our children and what that transaction costs us all.

Simpson is the author of Anywhere But Here, The Lost Father, A Regular Guy, and Off Keck Road, which was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award and won the Heartland Prize of the Chicago Tribune. She has received a Whiting Writers' Award, a Guggenheim grant, a Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Writers' Award and recently a Literature Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

The Greenwich Library and Just Books are thrilled to welcome Colman Andrews, a Greenwich resident and acclaimed cookbook author and co-founder and former editor-in-chief of Saveur, as he discusses and signs copies of his latest novel, Ferran: The Inside Story of El Bulli and the Man Who Reinvented Food (Gotham, October 5, 2010; $28).
