One Glenvile Parent Reports:

The Glenville 5th graders who are in the 6th grade wing of Western Middle School were not even told about this. We had to find out about it on Greenwich Roundup That's poor communication. I'm keeping my kid home until the middle school is sanitized.

Fever hits students from Western Middle School during upstate outing - Greenwich Time

....The 19 Western Middle School sixth-graders were on a trip to Nature's Classroom in Colebrook and their parents were told to bring them home, according to district officials. An additional 36 students visited the infirmary complaining of headaches and fatigue......

...."I'm concerned, especially since all those New York schools are closing," said Robert Citron, who will hold his eighth-grade son out of school today and Friday.

"I've talked to a couple of other parents and they're holding their kids out too," he said.
Officials are not doing enough to deal with the threat, he said.

"I don't think they should take it lightly. They should close that school and clean it," Citron said of Western Middle School. "Even if one kid goes to school, what's going to protect the rest of the school?"

Many Western students have siblings in other town schools, said Citron, who wondered what would stop the spread of disease throughout the district.

Citron also blasted the letter from the district alerting parents to the situation.

"It's vague and it doesn't say if they're going to do anything," he said. "They sent out a quiz with the list of symptoms ... That's not even funny."......

....Greenwich also confirmed its third case of swine flu, and the health department is preparing for a worst-case scenario with a drill to practice distributing antiviral drugs scheduled for next week.....

....As of Wednesday, there were 81 confirmed cases of swine flu in Connecticut, with 61 from Fairfield County. None of the people required hospitalization, and all have recovered or are recovering.....

Greenwich, Connecticut, resident, John Coen arrested to assaulting a police officer

Posted in April 14th, 2009

by Claudette Rothman in Connecticut, Greenwich, crime

Forty-four year old John Coen, from Greenwich, Connecticut, was arrested for assaulting two police officers who were attempting to escort him out of The Ginger Man restaurant.

Police were called to the local eatery last Friday night after Coen started insulting patrons, and harassing the bartender with racial slurs.

After officers told Coen he needed to leave the establishment, he became verbally abusive and lunged toward an officer "in a fighting manner," the police report says.

The officers attempted to arrest Coen, and the drunken man went berserk and tried to grab one of the officer's batons from his belt, causing two officers to pin him to the ground.

The police report says it took several jolts from a Taser to bring Coen under control.

Coen is charged with assaulting a police officer and breach of peace.

UPDATE: 5/20/09

A Greenwich Diva reader emailed Greenwich Diva about the John Coen arrest at the Ginger Man restaurant and she wrote about on April 14.

They wanted to know if the John Coen she wrote about in her post was the same John Coen who is about to be questioned in the death of a Steamboat, Colorado, man.

After doing some research this is what she came up with.

There is a John Coen whose wife, Lisette Coen, was about to marry Chris Corna from Steamboat, Colorado, and Chris was in Greenwich this week to meet Lisette's family.

While he was in Greenwich, he was killed in an automobile accident on the Greenwich, Portchester state line, and although authorities are publicly calling it an accident, IT IS ALLEGED that authorities are going to change it to murder and it is also ALLEGED that John is going to be called in for questioning.

It is also ALLEGED that John was also arrested for sexual harassment in Oct. of last year.

It is possible that there could be two different John Coen's with the same connections out there.

Greenwich Diva will keep us posted as the Greenwich Time and the rest of the "Lamestream" Media wanders around clueless.

Update: 5:43p.m Chris had stabbed wounds to his throat when he was found Monday morning around 4:30.

PORT CHESTER - Police are investigating the death of a Colorado man in a single-car accident early Monday

He had wounds inconsistent with the accident, police said.
Christian Richard Corna, 45, of Steamboat Springs, Colo., had stab wounds to his neck, the medical examiner said.

Corna, who was visiting friends in Greenwich, Conn., crashed a rented Toyota into the north corner abutment of the Metro North bridge driving southbound on the 300 block of North Main Street at 4:30 a.m., police said. He had to cross the road to strike the bridge, police said. A county accident reconstruction team is working on the incident.

According to the medical examiner, police said, the crash would have been enough to kill Corna.

Detectives "can't rule out" that anyone else was involved in this fatal accident until a determination is made by the medical examiner and police that the wounds were self-inflicted and/or not a precipitating factor in the accident, Lt. James Ladaireous said. ...

GREENWICH PUBLIC SCHOOLS
May 20, 2009

Dear Parents,

I wanted to let you know that today at a Western Middle School, Grade 6 Nature’s Classroom trip, nineteen (19) students became ill with fevers. Their parents were contacted to bring them home from the trip. An additional thirty-six (36) students have visited the infirmary complaining of headaches and fatigue. After consultation with District and Town health officials, we decided to err on the side of caution and canceled the remainder of the trip. All students will return home Wednesday night.

All parents of the nineteen students were advised to have their children seen by their local
pediatrician prior to returning to school. We know that many people will be concerned about swine flu.

As is indicated in the attached document, flu-type symptoms do not necessarily mean a diagnosis of swine flu. As is standard practice, if your child exhibits any symptoms of illness, please keep them at home and/or have them seen by a doctor.

We will continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates if warranted.

Sincerely,

Dr. Betty J. Sternberg

To parents, students and staff of Connecticut schools

Probable and confirmed cases of novel H1N1 flu (swine flu) have been identified in Connecticut. We expect thatwith time, additional cases will be identified here and elsewhere in the country.
New information on disease severity prompted health experts to revise the school closure guidance that was initially published. The majority of U.S. cases have been less severe than initially reported from Mexico with fewer hospitalizations and deaths. CDC and local and state health officials will continue to closely monitor the severity and spread of this novel H1N1 influenza outbreak.

The most important message at this time is not new: Students and adults who are sick should NOT come to school. In particular, stay home if you have flu symptoms: fever and cough or sore throat, sometimes with runny or stuffy nose, body aches, vomiting or diarrhea. To avoid infecting others, please stay home and stay away from others for at least 7 days or until all symptoms have gone away for at least 24 hours, whichever is longer. Make decisions about when to seek medical care as you would under normal circumstances, and if you have flu symptoms, seek care if you have a fever for three or more days and seem to be getting sicker.

On May 5, 2009, CDC updated its guidance to reflect a more developed understanding of the H1N1 virus.

Based on this information, CDC changed its recommendation to focus school-based efforts on early identification of ill students and staff, a recommendation to stay home when ill, and good cough and hand ygiene etiquette as the primary means to reduce spread of influenza in schools.

Decisions about school closure should be at the discretion of local authorities based on local considerations, including public concern, the impact of school absenteeism, and staffing shortages. Like other flu viruses, novel H1N1 flu spreads from an ill person to others mainly through coughing or sneezing.

Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with the virus on it and then touching their mouth, nose or rubbing their eyes. People with novel H1N1 flu are thought to be able to spread the infection to others for approximately 7 days after becoming sick.

Children and adults who are well and without symptoms of flu do not need to be excluded from school or work on the basis of recent travel to an area with novel H1N1 flu or close contact with someone with novel H1N1 flu.

However such persons should closely monitor their health and should not attend school or work if they develop any symptoms. If symptoms develop while at school or work, arrange to return to home immediately.

It is very important to teach our children what we all need to do to prevent spread of the virus:

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Cover your cough or sneeze with the crook or your elbow or a tissue.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. If water is not
nearby, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
• Try not to touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs often spread this way.
• For more information, please see our attached
o Novel H1N1 flu (swine flu): Facts for families of school-aged children

More information, including frequent updates, is available online:

Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our children and our schools healthy.
Sincerely,

Matthew L. Cartter, MD, MPH
State Epidemiologist

When to Keep Your Child at Home

How can we limit the spread of H1N1 virus (swine flu)?

The most important thing is to keep sick people away from healthy people. So if your child is sick, you must keep your child home. Staying home when sick stops the spread of the flu and helps the sick person get well. Answer these questions every morning before sending your child to school or daycare: 1. Does your child have a fever (100º F or 37. 7ºC)? If you don’t have a thermometer, feel your child’s skin with your hand. If it is much warmer than usual your child probably has a fever.

2. Does your child have a sore throat, cough, body aches, vomiting, or diarrhea?
When should my child go to the doctor?

Call your health care provider if your child is ill enough that you would normally see a health care provider. Use the same judgment you would use during a normal flu season. If you would not usually see a health care provider for the symptoms your child has now, you do not need to see a health care provider.

For more information and on-going updates:

• Connecticut Department of Public Health H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu) web site:
http://www.ct.gov/ctfluwatch

• Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) web site: http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu

If you answered “yes” to both questions above, your child might have the flu. Keep your child home from school for 7 calendar days, or until symptoms are gone for 24 hours, whichever is longer.

If you checked “yes” to only one of the questions above, keep your child home from school until
symptoms are gone for 24 hours.

Great Another Fake Hearst Newspaper Blog
With Yet Another Lawyer In A Corporate suit.
All of these fake Hearst Newspaper Blogs reminds Greenwich Roundup of aa fake blog in 2006 called Walmarting Across America. It was purportedly written by two Wal-Mart "enthusiasts" who decided to journey across the United States in an RV, blogging about the experience as they visited Wal-Marts along the way. While two people actually did travel across the United States in an RV, the publicity stunt was revealed to be paid for by Wal-Mart and handled by an outside design firm and advertising agency.
This Type Of Fake Greenwich Time
Fake Blogging Is Like "Astroturfing".
Astroturfing is a word in English describing formal political, advertising, or public relations campaigns seeking to create the impression of being spontaneous "grassroots" behavior, hence the reference to the artificial grass, AstroTurf.

The goal of such a campaign is to disguise the efforts of a political or commercial entity as an independent public reaction to some political entity—a politician, political group, product, service or event. Astroturfers attempt to orchestrate the actions of apparently diverse and geographically distributed individuals, by both overt ("outreach", "awareness", etc.) and covert (disinformation) means. Astroturfing may be undertaken by an individual pushing a personal agenda or highly organized professional groups with financial backing from large corporations, non-profits, or activist organizations. Very often the efforts are conducted by political consultants who also specialize in opposition research.
The Greenwich Time's Use Of Astroturfing Techniques Are A Parody Of Real Greenwich Bloggers. Just like these other parody's of Astroturfing in the media.......
Government astroturfing, as well as other sneaky tricks including an eleven-day war waged to distract from a sex scandal, are depicted in the film Wag the Dog.
The satirical newspaper The Onion had an opinion piece titled "I'd Love This Product Even If I Weren't A Stealth Marketer," which is written as though by a young employee for Pepsi-Cola who is paid to AstroTurf
In the Christopher Buckley novel Thank You for Smoking, Nick Naylor mentions several astroturf groups, including a "Smokers' Rights" group made up of Hispanic smokers that was called "Fumamos", Spanish for "We smoke".
