The Board of Trustees of Convent of the Sacred Heart has announced the appointment of Pamela Juan Hayes, 1964 Convent graduate, as the next head of school beginning July 1. Headmistress Sister Joan Magnetti will step down in June 2009, after completing her 19th year as headmistress. The board reached its unanimous decision following a national search and with the participation of parents, alumnae, faculty and staff, students and friends.

“Pam brings to our school her passion for education, her belief in the importance of an all girls’ environment, and her wide-ranging expertise with Sacred Heart schools,” said Kristina Sekor Hooper 1988, chair of the Board of Trustees.

“I am deeply honored to be appointed the next head of Convent of the Sacred Heart,” said Ms. Hayes. “I can think of no more important enterprise than educating the next generation of women leaders.”

A graduate of Convent of the Sacred Heart, Ms. Hayes received a bachelor’s degree from Briarcliff College and a master’s degree in teaching from Manhattanville College. She served on the faculty and administration at three Sacred Heart schools — Greenwich, New York and San Francisco. In 2000, Ms. Hayes was appointed to her current position as director of the schools of the Sacred Heart at San Francisco.

Her educational philosophy is aligned with St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, the foundress of the Society of the Sacred Heart, who said, “I would have founded the society for the sake of a single child.” Ms. Hayes is dedicated to educating girls and young women to become leaders who will assume roles and responsibility for the transformation of our society.

Founded in 1848, Convent of the Sacred Heart is an all-girls’ independent, day school in Greenwich with an enrollment of 775 students from preschool through 12th grade.

“We are all delighted that Pam, a graduate of our school, has been chosen as the next head of school,” Sister Magnetti said. “Her love of the mission of Sacred Heart and her experience as a Sacred Heart student, teacher and administrator solidifies the past and gives great hope for our future.”
