1/13/10 BOE MEETING BRIEF: January 7, 2010 Work Session

WORK SESSION- Thursday, January 7, 2010 at Havemeyer

Action on Revision to 2010-11 Budget Resolution
The Board approved, 7-0, a resolution to facilitate the use of the Print
Shop by the Distinguished Teachers Awards Committee, and to provide for an
"approval to use" for funding for the annual Area Nine Cable Council
grant. The proposed changes to the Budget Resolution will now go to the
BET for action.

Capital Improvement Plan Update
Assistant Superintendent Dr. Susan Wallerstein and Superintendent Dr.
Sidney Freund presented the Board with an update on the First Selectman's
Capital Improvement Plan process. The Committee has ranked the various
projects for the Town and the Schools and are now deliberating the
ranking. The Public Hearing for the Selectman's Capital Improvement Plan
will be on January 26, 2010. The Board will review again at its January
21, 2010 Board Meeting.

Monitoring Report: E-003 - Writing
Dr. Jennifer Mitchell, Program Coordinator for Reading and Language Arts,
K-12 and Mr. Rich Alessi, Program Administrator for Social
Studies/History, 9-12 presented the Writing Monitoring Report. The report
described the 2009 increases over the 2008 standardized test scores "at
almost every academic level (elementary, middle and high) and achievement
level (Proficiency, Goal and Advanced), with CAPT scores reflecting
five-year highs."

BOE 2009-10 Agenda Plan
Reviewed and adjusted per discussion. The plan is available as part of
Board materials for each work session and regular monthly meeting.

The next meeting is the Board of Education Meeting on Thursday, January
21, 2010, 7:00 PM at Central Middle School.
