Superintendent of New Haven Schools Reginald Mayo Has Just Made Another Boneheaded Decision School board appoints 7 administrators; uncertified staff in flux ... NEW HAVEN — The Board of Education has voted to appoint two principals, four assistant principals and a new director of instruction, but did not act on paraprofessional layoffs, as had been anticipated by the paraprofessionals union...... ....Among administrative appointees Monday were Frank Costanzo as Cooperative Arts High School assistant principal, Yolanda Jones-Generette as Barnard Magnet School assistant principal, Jennifer Olson as Katherine Brennan School assistant principal, Sarah Rosner as James Hillhouse High School assistant principal, Karen Lott as Katherine Brennan School principal and Sabrina Breland as Urban Youth Center principal. Salaries for the new principals and assistants range from $101,272 to $124,703..... .....Also Monday, former Greenwich Principal Damaris Rau was tapped as the district’s new director of instruction, replacing Miriam Camacho, who retired this year. Rau will earn $131,143 a year. Rau will be responsible for managing schools and principals, focusing on improving student achievement, implementing curriculum, and reviewing student and staff assessments, among other tasks. Rau began her career in New York City as an early-childhood teacher and later became an assistant principal. She most recently served as principal at the Hamilton Avenue School, a Title I school in Greenwich. Assistant Superintendent of Schools Garth Harries said Rau is gifted in serving “high needs populations.” Superintendent of Schools Reginald Mayo welcomed Rau and the new staff Monday. “You are going to move this system — help us go from good to great,” he said. 09/06/09 Once Again Hearst Newspaper VP Lincoln Millstein Tells It Like It Is

Jim Himes stands up to the talk radio crowd

Anytime you vote for a first-term congressman, as I did for Jim Himes, you do it on some measure of blind faith. I liked what he had to say and I liked the fact that he was a champion of affordable housing in his hometown which was not a very popular position to take in Greenwich. But I also worried that he would wilt under the weight of political hand-to-hand combat which is, unfortunately, what the talk radio crowd has done to our national civil discourse. The chameleon Joe Lieberman represents the worst of an archetype of convenience. I defy anyone to tell me what Joe Lieberman stands for, if anything, other than his own political preservation. Therefore I was extremely heartened by Jim Himes’s performance, deportment and expressed opinions in front of the “town halls” last week in Fairfield County.

St. Paul Lutheran Church, 286 Delavan Ave., is scheduled to host religious school and Bible study every Wednesday starting this week.

The religious school is slated for 3 p.m. every Wednesday.

Students will listen to music and hear Bible stories. The program is followed by a family supper and adult Bible study. The program has open enrollment for preschool through high school.
The "Crossways!" Bible study program is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. every Wednesday.

The program, which is geared toward adults, explores the themes and contents of the Bible. Cost of the materials is $70 and may be collected in installments.
