There were high points aplenty during last weekend’s toast-and-roast testimonial at the Hyatt in Old Greenwich for Joe Pisani, my friend and colleague. The turnout was strong, with guests from various parts of Joe’s life over the last 25 years, and many of those through his work with The Advocate and Greenwich Time.
(I’m always shocked to see Joe’s four daughters. They are so gorgeous — each could be a super-model tomorrow. They also look like Joe. How is this possible, I always wonder? Then comes the aha! moment: Sandy Pisani, Joe’s gorgeous wife.) ...
...It’s fair to say that, in public, Mayor Malloy generally portrays a love/hate relationship with Stamford’s neighbor to the west. So it was in that spirit that the Mayor seemed to admonish First Selectman Tesei for failing to acknowledge Lin Lavery....
...Mayor Malloy wants to be governor. He ran a credible Democratic primary campaign in 2006 but lost at the polls to John DeStefano, who ultimately lost to our current governor, M. Jodi Rell.
While Mayor Malloy hasn’t shared his plans (his mayoral term expires next year, among other factors to hash out), I think most people expect that he will run for governor again in 2010...
...I find myself every once in a while wishing for a primary fight between them. It’s not likely to happen. But it would be big fun. Both are smart and quick on their feet.
I had those feelings again last Sunday, when Mr. Blumenthal followed Mr. Malloy at the podium and admonished the mayor — for failing to recognize in the audience the venerable Christel Truglia, the Democratic state House member from Stamford and senior member of the city’s legislative delegation who is retiring at the end of her term in January....
...Mayor Malloy smiled and laughed, as the audience laughed and clapped. Or was it a grimace on his face?
With these two, you never can tell.

John Margenot Jr. doesn't think the country will see a military draft again, barring any sort of national emergency.
"There'd have to be a real change in attitude," said the former first selectman, now 80, noting that ideas about national service have changed drastically since he entered the Army in 1946.
But just in case, Margenot, who lives in Cos Cob, heads a little-known board that would hear the claims of local objectors should the draft ever be invoked.
The last draft ended in 1973, but in the case of a new one, Local Board No. 14 - one of five in Fairfield County and approximately 2,200 across the country - would review exemption and deferment requests from men in Greenwich, Darien and parts of Stratford, Stamford and Norwalk....
....Impartiality is a hard thing to teach, especially with recent cuts to the Selective Service System's budget. Last year, for the first time, member's weren't reimbursed for mileage to their annual meetings, and the system is working on a DVD training program to save members the trip.
But for members like Barry Wood, 59, of Old Greenwich, sitting on the local board is foremost a kind of service. A United States Postal Service plant manager, he has served his local board for the last 17 years.
"I think being on the board is an honor, even though it's a volunteer thing," said Wood, who served in the United States Air Force during Vietnam. "To me it's about serving my country. I know we would want the best army."
It's not about getting kids the join the military, said Wood, but rather protecting its integrity.
Margenot agreed.
"For those who have respect for the military, it's a good way to serve."

In Greenwich, where new homes make up about 15 percent of the sales inventory, the buying pattern looks much the same. Sales of homes priced between $2 million and $5 million were down about 30 percent for the first eight months of the year, according to figures prepared by Shore & Country Properties. Sales above $5 million were down 47 percent.
Meanwhile, in the lowest price ranges, between $400,000 and $600,000, sales nearly doubled (from 10 deals to 19). If buyers at the top of the market are afraid to commit, some entry-level buyers are taking advantage of the opportunities that falling prices create, said Russell Pruner, an owner of Shore & Country
“This is the first time in five years that we can show someone seven listings for homes in Greenwich under $500,000,” he said.
Even more remarkably, Greenwich agents can show prospective buyers more than 50 properties priced above $10 million. Five years ago, there were closer to 20 such properties. The current inventory, which includes new homes, could take two or three years to clear out, Mr. Pruner said....

Kenneth Wright, 42, of Stamford was arrested Oct. 20 and charged with third degree assault and second degree reckless endangerment. Police had been sent to Mill Pond Shopping Center on the report of a fight in progress. According to police, another man said he and Wright had an argument and Wright hit him, causing him to fall onto a truck and hit his face on the side of it.

The man told police Wright did this without any physical provocation. Police reported that the man was bleeding from a laceration on the right side of his face under his eye. Wright was released on a $5,000 cash bond and is due in court Oct. 27.
DISORDERLY
Margarita Silva, 66, of 88 Parsonage Road was arrested Oct. 20 and charged with disorderly conduct and threatening. Police responded to Parsonage Cottage on the report of a resident threatening an aide with a knife. Silva allegedly threatened a resident attendant with a steak knife on three separate occasions because she believed he was taking too long getting a spare key after she had locked her key in her apartment. No injuries were reported. Silva was released on a promise to appear and was due in court Oct. 21.
POSSESSION
Jesse Sammis, 28, of 25 Maher Ave. and Zain Hussain, 32, of Stamford were arrested Oct. 20 after a narcotics investigation. According to police, officers saw a drug transaction involving Hussain, whom police termed as a “known drug dealer,” and Sammis on Mason Street in front of the Chase Bank, about 200 feet north of a children’s day care facility. Sammis left the scene and police pulled him over. Officers said in the car, he had a bag of cocaine in his possession, narcotics pills in his pocket, a green pill container with 43 pills inside and numerous plastic ziplock bags with white residue in them. Police also pulled Hussain over and seized numerous drugs and narcotics, drug packaging materials, scales and $908 in cash. Police said the cash value of the drugs is $2,690. Sammis was charged with possession of narcotics, possession of paraphernalia, intent to sell narcotics under one ounce, failure to keep prescription drugs in their original container, conspiracy to posses narcotics and possession of narcotics within 1,500 feet of school housing. Hussain was charged with possession of narcotics within 1,500 feet of school housing, sale of narcotics, possession of narcotics, conspiracy to sell narcotics, possession of marijuana under four ounces, intent to sell narcotics under one ounce, intent to sell marijuana under one kilogram, operating a drug factory, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to keep prescription medication in its original container and intent to sell narcotics within 1,500 feet of school housing. Sammis was released on a $10,000 cash bond and Hussain was held in lieu of a $150,000 cash bond. They are both due in court Oct. 27.
APPEAR
Stanislaw Mrozek, 21, of Brooklyn, N.Y. was arrested Oct. 21 and charged with second degree failure to appear. Mrozek reportedly turned himself in after allegedly failing to appear in court on charges of driving under the influence, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, not having an operator’s license and not having any insurance. Mrozek was released on a $1,000 cash bond and is due in court Nov. 5.
DISORDERLY
A 17-year-old Greenwich boy was arrested Oct. 22 and charged with disorderly conduct and risk of injury to a minor. The boy reportedly turned himself in on an existing warrant, stemming from an alleged domestic dispute on Oct. 6 where a verbal argument with a younger sibling escalated into a minor physical altercation. The boy was released on a promise to appear and is due in court Oct. 23.

A changing electorate and handsome fundraising totals have given supporters of Barack Obama hope that the Illinois senator could become the first Democratic presidential candidate to carry the town since 1964.
Such a victory would have once seemed unthinkable in Greenwich, where the Bush family has its roots and Republicans have historically enjoyed a sizable advantage in the number of registered voters.
"Oh, I think for sure Greenwich doesn't just pull the Republican lever automatically anymore," said Ned Lamont, who is co-chairman of Obama's campaign in Connecticut and who made headlines himself two years ago when he defeated Joe Lieberman in the Democratic Senate primary but then lost the general election to the incumbent.
Not so fast, say Republicans, who mentioned that Greenwich has always been kind to McCain, as in 2000, when the town's GOP backed the Arizona senator in the presidential primary over then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush, the sentimental pick for local party members.
"No. McCain's going to win Greenwich. I guarantee you that," said Joe Romano, coordinator of McCain's campaign in Greenwich.
Lyndon Baines Johnson was the last Democrat atop the national ticket to take Greenwich.
Although they disagree on the outcome of the election, Republicans and Democrats concurred that the symbolism of an Obama victory in Greenwich - Bush country for many years - would be huge....
.....After long enjoying a greater than 2-to-1 lead over Democrats in voter registration, however, town Republicans are losing their comfortable margin of political dominance in Greenwich, with the two major parties growing closer to parity in membership.
As of late September, the ratio of Republicans to Democrats in Greenwich was 1.6-to-1, down from just over 2-to-1 in 2004 and 2.4 to 1 in 1998, according to data from the registrars of voters.
Democratic operatives said that is heartening news for Obama, and that they hope to sway moderate Republicans who are disenchanted with GOP conservatism.
"The problem with being a Greenwich Republican or a (U.S. Rep. Christopher) Shays Republican is that the Republican party has left them behind," said Lex Paulson, the Obama campaign coordinator for the 4th Congressional District, which includes most of Fairfield County and a sliver of New Haven Country.
Paulson said Greenwich is no longer just important from a fundraising standpoint....

Financial Reports Reveal Differences in Himes, Shays Holdings
Democratic 4th Congressional District candidate Jim Himes' holdings in stocks, mutual funds and other investments make him a multimillionaire and dwarf the financial assets of Republican S. Rep. Chris Shays, according to financial disclosure statements.
Himes, a former investment banker with Goldman Sachs, listed some 60 holdings in a financial disclosure statement filed May 14 with the U.S. House of Representatives' clerk's office that at the time were valued at between $2.4 million and $5.7 million.
Among those assets were 15 Fidelity investment funds listed at between $992,000 and $2.2 million that likely have lost as much as a third of their value as the stock market tumbled in recent weeks, assuming they still are in his portfolio. Himes also has substantial assets with his former employer.
Under disclosure rules, candidates are required to list their assets, incomes and liabilities in ranges that can be as narrow as $1 to $200 and as broad as $25 million to $50 million.
Himes' largest asset listed was between $500,000 and $1 million in Fidelity's Connecticut Municipal Money Market Fund that has increased slightly in value over the past year..... Blah .... Blah ... Blah ..... Blah ..... What about Chris? .....
.....Shays has less than $32,000 in savings, according to his disclosure report. He has less than $15,000 in a Wells Fargo Mortgage Escrow account and an HSBC bank account. He also had less than $1,000 in a congressional credit union account. Shays also listed a recreational vehicle as an asset valued at between $15,001 and $50,000. He rents the vehicle to his campaign.

Once again, we can see the discrimination that continues in town against people with disabilities ( "Man fighting for YMCA access, Greenwich Time, Oct. 20). We have been the silent minority, but things are about to change.
We recently formed the First Selectman's Advisory Committee for People With Disabilities. The mission is to advise town officials on matters pertaining to the rights and needs of citizens with disabilities. We will also advocate for improvements to make the town more accessible for people with disabilities.
The YMCA building expansion should never have been given a temporary certificate of occupancy. Why should some people be allowed to use this facility when others are turned away? When the builders at Hamilton Avenue School did not comply with the disability regulations by placing the light switches at the incorrect height, they were told that they must be lowered. Shouldn't this apply to the Y?
It is obvious that individuals with disabilities are not a priority. The YMCA Web site says "the Y has something for everyone," and "we offer programs for everyone in the family." I guess that means that people with disabilities are not included with everyone.
Why should the disabled have to wait? If one of the aims of the expansion was to provide access for the disabled, then the accessibility to the expansion should have been done first. Evidently, it is more important to have a new pool than it is to allow access for all.
The YMCA has now shown people with disabilities that they are not a priority. It has discriminated against many people who just want to use the same facilities as others in this town.
I hope that the YMCA will find some way to make this area accessible immediately, and that the town will consider whether its temporary certificate of occupancy should be withdrawn.

Evensong refers to the Anglican liturgy of Evening Prayer, particularly but not exclusively when the liturgy is sung. Many of us in the Evangelical community have been fond of referring to the ‘liturgy’ as ‘lethargy’ and dismiss it as being boring and repetitive with little relevance to contemporary life or worship. Greenwich, Connecticut-based band Evensong Rising is out to challenge that perception with their self-titled worship project.
Birthed out of the 275 year-old Stanwich Congregational Church, one of the oldest congregations in the country, band visionary Chris Sorensen was tasked to examine ways to re-invigorate interest in faith among the area’s predominantly post-modern constituency. Sorensen’s answer was to confront post-modern relativity with pre-modern certainty. He put together a band of first call players from remarkably diverse musical, economic, and ethnic backgrounds to create a sonic backdrop that smelted rock together with reggae, jazz with Celtic world music, and pop with the blues. While the music is as post-modern as anything you are likely to hear in a hip New York club, the lyrical content is decidedly traditional, though devoid of the dusty phraseology one normally associates with ancient worship forms....

Greenwich Roundup Will Probably Post A Bit Less This Weekend. I am Fighting An Infection That Has Been Going On For A Few Weeks. I Originally Was Bitten By A Spider And The Wound Became Infected And Swelled Up. I Started Getting Aches And Fevers And Went To The Hospital. The Doctor Cut The Wound, Drained It, Put Packing In The Hole, Gave Me Antibiotic IV And A Perspiration For Antibiotic Pills.
I Went Back To The Doctor Two Days Later For A Wound Check And Things Had Not In proved. So I Was Given New Wound Packing, Another Antibiotic IV And A Second Prescription Of Antibiotic Pills To Take Along With The Other Pills. Things Were Going Pretty Well Until Late Last Week And Weekend.
I Got A little Busy At Home, Work And Church And I Skiped Three Wound Checks. The Infection Once Again Took Over. Now I Have Had To Get An Another IV And I Now Have A New Perscription Wound Cream And Pills That Now Must Be Taken Every Four Hours. I Am Still Getting Fevers So I May Be Posting Less This Weekend.
