Tuesday Events

The Greenwich Adult Learning Program is holding registration for its English as a Second Language program at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sept. 6 and 7 at the Havemeyer Building, located at 290 Greenwich Ave. Evening registrations for English as a Second Language and GED Preparation will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 6 and 7 at Greenwich High School, Folsom House, located at 10 Hillside Road.

Wednesday Events

Greenwich Public Schools will hold an open house on the Greenwich High School environmental evaluation on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Greenwich High School auditorium, 10 Hillside Road. There will be an update on the environmental evaluation in progress at GHS and information on the GHS fields, athletic programs, transportation, parking, and the GHS Music Instructional Space and Auditorium, or MISA, project. Representatives from the school district, the high school, the MISA Building Committee, environmental consulting companies, the state Department of Public Health, the state Department of Environmental and Energy Protection and the Greenwich Department of Health will be in attendance. There will be an opportunity to ask questions of the representatives. Those attending can submit questions in advance to be answered at the forum to greenwichpta@gmail.com.

The Greenwich Toastmasters is holding a meeting at 7 p.m. Sept. 7 at the Bendheim Western Civic Center, located at 449 Pemberwick Road in Glenville. Toastmasters is a nonprofit educational organization for adults looking to overcome their fears of public speaking and generally improve their public speaking skills. The organization helps develop effective communication, listening skills, and the speaking skills needed to motivate, persuade, and be a leader. Singer-songwriter Jesse Terry will perform at the Old Greenwich Farmer’s Market at 4 p.m. Sept. 7 and 14 at 38 West End Ave. Terry’s 2009 debut, “The Runner,” introduced him to the Americana scene. Admission is free to the public. For more information, visit jesseterrymusic.com.

Thursday Events

The Greenwich Senior Center, 299 Greenwich Ave., will conduct a butterfly release and a 9/11 tribute at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 8. The event is open to the public as a Day of Remembrance and Healing for all those in attendance who have lost someone or who know of someone in the community that was affected by the tragedy of 9/11. First Selectman Peter Tesei and a New York City firefighter will address the crowd and the center’s VITAS Innovative Hospice Care chaplain will bestow a blessing. JCC Greenwich will broadcast “Live from New York’s 92nd Street Y” at 8 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich, 4 Horseneck Lane. In a program broadcast live from New York City via satellite, former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer, former U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey, and nationally syndicated radio talk show host Michael Medved will discuss “9/11: Lessons Learned & Future Challenges.” Tickets, $18, can be purchased at jccgreenwich.org or via mail at JCC Greenwich, One Holly Hill Lane, Greenwich, CT 06830. The sixth annual Greenwich Harbor Yacht Showcase will dock Sept. 9 to 11 at the Delamar Greenwich Harbor hotel, located at 500 Steamboat Road. Visitors can catch the first look at the yachts from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 9 at a kick-off preview party to benefit Audubon Greenwich and its conservation efforts in Long Island Sound. Admission is $75 per person and includes entertainment, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction. The showcase continues from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 10 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 11 at no charge. The showcase will feature complimentary family activities, and land exhibits ranging from fall fashion to a $2 million 1963 Corvette Rondine Concept Car. The Glenville Volunteer Fire Co., the recipient of an 8-foot-4-inch-tall section of I-beam from the World Trade Center, will dedicate a memorial to local victims of the terrorist attacks at 6 p.m. Sept. 9. Members of the public are invited to attend the ceremony, which will take place in front of the fire house at 266 Glenville Road. The police department’s honor guard will participate in the dedication ceremony, according to organizers, who said the volunteer fire company has been working with the Greenwich Chapter of the American Red Cross to invite families of local victims of the attacks to the tribute.

The Friends of the Cos Cob Library will hold its annual book sale Sept. 10, featuring thousands of gently used bestsellers, classics, self-help books and much more, at Cos Cob Library. The preview sale begins at 11 a.m. and is free to Friends of the Cos Cob Library members or a $10 admission to the general public. Doors to the sale will be open to everyone from noon to 3:30 p.m. with free admission. Book donations are being accepted at the Cos Cob Library until Sept. 2. The Friends of the Cos Cob Library will host its annual open house from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Cos Cob Library, located at 5 Sinawoy Road. The theme of this year’s open house is “One World, Many Stories” and it will feature activities with an international flair including an origami workshop and “Jazz from Around the World” with Brian Boots and Friends. Putnam Ave. in Greenwich. The theme will be “The Living Stones,” inspired by Peter’s first letter to early Christians. On From 10:30 a.m. to noon Sept. 10, the church will offer, for younger children, a program of crafts and engaging activities centered on a geological theme. During the 10:30 a.m. service Sept. 11, the Rev. Holly Adams will deliver the sermon and include a remembrance of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. A barbecue luncheon, complete with an ice cream truck, will follow at 11:30 a.m. Reservations for the Saturday event and Sunday luncheon are strongly encouraged. Audubon Greenwich will host “Birding for Beginners – With a Twist” from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sept. 10. Learn everything you wanted to know about bird watching but were afraid to ask. Learn how to watch birds more successfully and the merits of different field guides, binoculars, and other gadgets. Discuss the art of bird watching and hear expert tips from Luke Tiller, a professional birding guide and the official Quaker Ridge hawkwatcher. The Greenwich September 11th Remembrance Committee is holding its 10th annual event marking the 9/11 terrorist attacks at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 11 in front of Greenwich Town Hall. The event will honor the memory of those lost on this day, especially the 23 Greenwich residents who died, the victims at the Pentagon, and those aboard United Airlines flight 93. There will be a wreath and flower presentation, twenty-one-gun salute, and special tributes to remember the sacrifices made by the first responders who perished in the aftermath. The Round Hill Community Church will conduct a service of remembrance at 10 a.m. Sept. 11.
The Reverend Douglas Miller will present the sermon “A Mighty Fortress.” Special music will feature David Glukh, trumpet, and Risa Renae Harman, soprano. The traditional Rally Day Picnic, along with activities for children, will follow the service at 11 a.m. All are welcome. Les Beaux Arts Gallery will open “Peru Impressions” Sept. 11 at Round Hill Community Church, located at 395 Round Hill Road. The exhibition, which runs through Oct. 20, features travel photography by Greenwich photographer Arto Szabó. Szabó is self taught and has been photographing U.S. National Parks and many other countries around the world for many years. He was born in Hungary and emigrated to the United States in 1956. Ongoing Events

The Bruce Museum will feature etchings by Pablo Picasso in its latest exhibition, “Picasso’s Vollard Suite: The Sculptor’s Studio,” on view June 18 to Oct. 16. The exhibition features key images of Picasso etchings from a group of 100 prints he made for the legendary art dealer and publisher Ambroise Vollard, on loan from a private collection. The Bruce Museum is located at 1 Museum Drive in Greenwich. General admission is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and students, free for children under five and museum members. The Bruce Museum will present the exhibition “Bijoux: The Origins and Impact of Jewelry” from July 16 through Feb. 26. The exhibition features an array of different types of jewelry, as well as samplings of minerals, precious stones and other materials from which artists have created an infinite variety of human adornment. The exhibition investigates the wide range of materials used to make jewelry, delves into the genesis of these natural materials, and explores the economic and environmental impact of our universal attraction to sparkle. The Greenwich Chapter of the American Red Cross invites young adults ages 11 to 15 years to participate in a babysitter’s training class. Classes can be arranged as private group trainings and held at the Greenwich Chapter at 99 Indian Field Road. Participants learn how to care for children and infants; be a good leader and role model on the job; handle first aid and choking emergencies; and write a resume and interview for jobs. Each student receives a Babysitter’s Training Handbook with CD-ROM and a Red Cross certification of completion. The fee for the program is $90 per person.
