09/05/11 Greenwich Blogger Chris Fountain: "Bear with me – this blog is really about Greenwich real estate"

Chris Adds: "It’s just that the last weeks of August and Labor Day weekend don’t produce much real estate news so I turn to other subjects. I hope to have much more on real estate topics beginning tomorrow. Or not – I can’t control the market. In the meantime, enjoy the holiday."

Here Are Some Of The Posts From "For What It's Worth Today"

Is there anything more irrelevant than the black voter?

Texas blacks oppose Rick Perry. Hate to be harsh here, but who cares about them? They’re captive Democrat voters so Republicans don’t even bother reaching out to them: half of the men are in jail or felons so can’t vote and most of the rest don’t bother going to the polls unless they receive street money. Hispanics and Asians know how to organize and get their voices heard. Blacks have let themselves be taken for granted by the Democrats and get bupkis. Bullworth summed it up perfectly (and readers, if you can find this on YouTube, please supply the link – I’m hopeless on this stuff):

Angry black woman: Are you sayin’ the Democratic Party don’t care about the African-American community?

Bullworth: Isn’t that OBVIOUS? You got half your kids are out of work and the other half are in jail. Do you see ANY Democrat doing anything about it? Certainly not me! So what’re you gonna do, vote Republican? Come on! Come on, you’re not gonna vote Republican! Let’s call a spade a spade!

[Loud, angry booing]

Bullworth: I mean – come on! You can have a Billion Man March! If you don’t put down that malt liquor and chicken wings, and get behind someone other than a running back who stabs his wife, you’re NEVER gonna get rid of somebody like me!

Amanda Knox trial resumes in Italy

Long story, but if you’ve been following this since 2007, it’s a tale of , I think, a wrongfully convicted young girl. Sloppy police work, defective DNA evidence, and the 24-year-old has been held in prison four years. From 3,000 (?) miles away, it seems she got a raw deal.

Oh my goodness – we’re doomed

I just heard on NPR that Obama, having labored mightily, is planning to address us Thursday with a speech preceded by a performance by Aretha Franklin, and then, flanked by union reps who will attack his free trade proposals, announce some job training programs. Presumably, he will conclude with Pete Seeger leading us all in a rousing chorus of “Michael row the boat ashore”. Fear for our future: we are being ruled by an idiot. If the markets don’t collapse tomorrow, they certainly will on Friday.

HERE IS SOME OF THE NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL NEWS THAT CHRIS FOUNTAIN AND THE GREENWICH TIME MISSED ON THIS LABOR DAY ......

Joseph E. Stiglitz: The Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks by al-Qaida were meant to harm the United States, and they did, but in ways that Osama Bin Laden probably never imagined. President George W. Bush's response to the attacks compromised America's basic principles, undermined its economy, and weakened its security. The attack on Afghanistan that followed the 9/11 attacks was understandable, but the subsequent invasion of Iraq was entirely unconnected to al-Qaida -- as much as Bush tried to establish a link. That war of choice quickly became very expensive -- orders of magnitude beyond the $60 billion claimed at the beginning -- as colossal incompetence met dishonest misrepresentation

The Palestinian Authority will seek recognition as a state at the UN, a senior Palestinian official has said. Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat told the Voice of Palestine radio station Sunday that the Palestinians would initiate peaceful demonstrations this month to draw the world's attention to their appeal at the UN. The chief negotiator asked the US and European countries to support the Palestinians and approve their statehood, the radio station said.

Addressing a crowd of 2,000 die-hard supporters who remain convinced she will run for president, Sarah Palin gave a presidential campaign-style speech in Iowa Saturday but did not announce a bid. Instead of a declaration, the Palin supporters at the Tea Party of America event got an intensely political speech from the former Alaska governor that scorched President Obama and the "permanent political class" of both parties.

In Folly Beach, S.C., people who built million-dollar homes right on the ocean -- only to see their property washed out by high tides as Hurricane Irene passed by far out to sea -- are relying on millions of dollars in taxpayer-funded renourishment projects to protect their homes from the encroaching sea. "It is fiscally irresponsible," former state regulator Elizabeth Hagood said of a state law that allowed the building of these homes. "And it is not in keeping with the best interests of all the citizens in terms of what our public beaches are."

Ellen Brown: North Dakota is the only state to be in continuous budget surplus since the banking crisis of 2008. Its balance sheet is so strong that it recently reduced individual income taxes and property taxes by a combined $400 million, and is debating further cuts. It also has the lowest foreclosure rate and lowest credit card default rate in the country, and it has had NO bank failures in at least the last decade. If its secret isn't oil, what is so unique about the state?

The KY brand of personal lubricants, whose ad campaign features couples in bed before and after they used the KY Intense product, has a new ad starring a lesbian couple. "It's this gel that stimulates arousal so the big moment will feel like we've never felt before," a woman tells her partner right before they make some fireworks.

Illegal immigrants received $4.2 billion in refundable tax credits from the Internal Revenue Service last year, according to a new study by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration. Under current law, individuals not permitted to work in the U.S. do not receive most federal public benefits -- but an increasing number are filing tax returns claiming the Additional Child Tax Credit, which is set up for working families.

Attorneys for a Port Aransas, Texas, man claim that he was severely beaten by police for riding a bicycle after dark without a headlight. Martin Garcia Ortiz, 48, is hospitalized in critical condition after an Aug. 10 arrest for public intoxication and resisting arrest. Attorneys claim he was knocked to the ground, kicked and beaten by officers.

The government could raise $700 billion by either taking half of everything earned by the bottom 50% or by raising the marginal tax rate on the top two percent, calculates comedian Jon Stewart. "They control 2.5 percent of this country's wealth," he says of the poor.

Minutes before Sarah Palin made her anticipated speech in Iowa, comedian Eric Golub told a joke on the same stage that compared liberal political ideology to "special needs children." After commending Palin on raising her son Trig while balancing other responsibilities, Golub made the analogy. "For that reason alone, the left should worship Sarah Palin and adopt her as one of their own: Because the leftist haters are an entire political ideology of special needs children."

A Crane, Texas, man who set fire to a church because he believed a disabled black man lived there has pleaded guilty to four federal charges for the hate crime. Steven Scott Cantrell, 25, was trying to send a message to the Aryan Brotherhood in Texas that he could be useful to the gang, authorities said. He'll serve at least 34 years in prison
