Owen Canfield: Book Sheds Light On Baseball In Connecticut

Hartford Courant

Connecticut Baseball — The Best of the Nutmeg State" is in its second printing. The History Press is the publisher. Don Harrison of Fairfield is the author.

It has been a number of years since Harrison and I have spoken and when he called, concerning another matter, it was a pleasant surprise. We cut up old touches for a while and then he mentioned the book.

Former baseball commissioner Fay Vincent wrote the forward, which immediately gives the work a high degree of credibility and panache. It presents interviews with 25 Connecticut players who had careers in the majors including such well-known personalities as Steve Blass, Bobby Valentine, Walt Dropo, Spec Shea, Charles Nagy, Jimmy Piersall, Johnny Ellis, Rico Brogna and Billy Gardner. Most of the interviews previously appeared in other publications, but Harrison did many of them and the bulk of the writing.

There's a chapter on umpires, notably Terry Tata, and a list, with various stats, of "175 native sons who played in the majors. I started compiling that in 1960," said the expert chronicler of the American pastime, a baseball addict all his life.

The book goes back to the Hartford Dark Blues of 1876 and Harrison did the research for it until he was blue in the face. Dark blue.

Harrison was sports editor of the Waterbury Republican American from 1967 to '81. His time there coincided with many of my years as a sports writer and columnist for The Courant. We covered a good many national, state and local sports events together.

He left sports writing that year and "went corporate".....

Wait A Minute:

Ex- Hartford Courant Sports Editor Owen Canfield Is Recommending A Book By Ex-Greenwich Citizen Editor Don Harrison, Even Though He Has Not Even Read The Book.

Harrison's book can be had for $19.99 but he has promised to put one in the mail to me as a gift.

Because I know Harrison's baseball expertise and ability, "Connecticut Baseball" will be a fine addition to my sports library.

No Wonder That Owen Canfield Is The Former Sports Editor At The Hartford Courant And Is Only Allowed To Write A Monthly Column At The Paper.

Don Harrison will introduce his newest book Connecticut Baseball: The Best of the Nutmeg State. Twin passions - newspapers and baseball - provided the impetus for Don Harrison's early career in sportswriting. In a sense, they have led to Connecticut Baseball: The Best of the Nutmeg State, his new book about Connecticut's myriad contributions to Major League Baseball. Don Harrison is an award-winning sports writer and has written articles for The Sporting News, Sports Quarterly-Baseball, The New York Times, Connecticut magazine, Waterbury Republican-American, the Greenwich Citizen, and dozens of other publications.

Is Don Harrison Playing With The Numbers At
The Greenwich Citizen Website?
.....Don Harrison over at Hearst Newspaper's Greenwich Citizen publishes a misleading 42,500 Unique Visitor Figure.....
.....But if you read the ad in Don Harrison's newspaper closely, you will find the rounded up 42,000 figure is not for just the Greenwich Citizen. It is for the Darien News-Review, the Fairfield Citizen News, the Greenwich Citizen, the New Canaan News-Review, the Norwalk Citizen and the Westport News.

And the reason that Don Harrison won't publish the complacent Greenwich Citizen's web stats openly and independently is that Greenwich Roundup probably gets more web traffic than his so-called news web site.
If you were to evenly divide the 42,000 Unique Visitor number that was published in the Greenwich Citizen by all six Brooks Community Newspapers you would get an estimated number of 8,082 Unique Visitors a month or about 267 Unique Visitors per day.

Bloggers like Chris Fountain at For What It's Worth and Claudette Rothman at Greenwich Diva consistently beat Greenwich Citizen's number day and day out. Greenwich real estate advertisers would probably get a bigger bang for their buck if they bought a web ad from Chris instead of the Greenwich Citizen. .....

Clueless Hearst Newspaper Editors (Don Harrison) And Jim Zorba (Greenwich Time), as well as, the Greenwich Post editor have ignored HAS parents complaints that the modular are once again leaking......

It is so easy for the Greenwich Citizen's Chain Newspaper Publisher and Editors to sit behind a desk and pontificate about the the rights that Americans enjoy, because so many paid the ultimate cost.
But it was to hard for the Greenwich Citizen's Chain Newspaper Publisher and Editors to get off their butts and cover democracy in action.
The Greenwich Citizen turned a blind eye to Greenwich High School students who exercised their free speech rights and wore "Don't Tase Me Bro" T-shirts to school to protest a fellow 140 pound water balloon throwing student getting up to 50,000 volts three different times.
Greenwich Citizen ignored ignored the towns youngest patriots as they engaged in an act of civil disobedience and stagged a sit in in the Greenwich High School Student Center and refused to go to class wearing those, "Don't Tase Me Bro" T-shirts.
It is a shame that minor children are not afraid of the powers that be, but the Publisher and Editors of the Greenwich Citizen are to afraid of upsetting the establishment to cover the news......
