SUPERINTENDENT APPOINTS ESOL COORDINATOR
(For immediate release: Monday, August 16, 2010 – Greenwich, CT)
Superintendent of Schools Dr.
Sidney A. Freund has announced the appointment of Ms. Trudi Durrell as the District’s PreK-12
Program Coordinator for English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), effective immediately. Dr.
Freund said, “Ms. Durrell is an experienced ESOL teacher at the elementary, middle and high school
level; she is a talented instructional leader and has participated in curriculum development at the local
and the State levels. Ms. Durrell has proven to be a teacher leader within the District’s ESOL
department and we are looking forward to working with her in building upon the success of this
program.”
An educator for fifteen years, Ms. Durrell has been with the Greenwich Public Schools as an ESOL
teacher since 2001. She is an ESOL teacher at Eastern Middle School (.8), a member of their School
Improvement Team, having served as Tri-Chair for two years, and is Co-Advisor to Eastern’s Student
Council. She also teaches at North Mianus School (.2). She is the current Treasurer and past President
(2003-2006) of Connecticut TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) and was a
member of the CT State TESOL Framework Committee. She is currently a member of the Town of
Fairfield’s Racial Imbalance Planning Committee. Prior to coming to Greenwich, Ms. Durrell spent
five years (1996-2001) as an ESL Instructor at Bunnell High School in Stratford, CT and one year
(1995-96) at PS 84Q in Long Island City, NY.
Ms. Durrell received her BA in International Diplomacy and Soviet Studies from the University of
Connecticut, Storrs, CT in 1990. She received a Masters in TESOL from Teacher’s College, Columbia
University, New York, NY in 1995; and her Sixth Year Certificate in Reading and Remedial Language
Arts from Southern Connecticut State University, New Haven, CT in 2000.
