Democrat Nancy Barton of Old Greenwich announces bid for Connecticut’s 36th State Senate Seat
Greenwich CT: Nancy Barton, a three-term member of the Greenwich Board of Estimate and Taxation, will seek her party’s nomination for State Senate.
Ms. Barton has a long history of professional, personal and governmental experience over the towns of the 36th District (Greenwich, Stamford, New Canaan). This experience includes responsibility for the legal affairs of a $490 billion corporation in Stamford at GE Capital, and experience in the general practice of law.
Nancy has spent the past 9 years working actively for the Child Guidance Center of Southern Connecticut, having recently been elevated to Board President. The Center is active in New Canaan, Stamford and Greenwich, and provides mental health services to children, adolescents and their families.
Ms. Barton also serves on the Greenwich Board of Estimate and Taxation, where she was recently reelected to her third term. On the BET, she has extensive experience in matters important to all residents of the 36th District including budgeting, protecting the taxpayers, and overall financial oversight.
Nancy’s family settled into the area in 1640. She is a committed and active Democrat, and her grandfather, H. Allen Barton, was the last Democrat to represent the area in Hartford. She believes in fiscal responsibility, but firmly believes that our government must protect the most vulnerable in society.

Why I Run
The 36th Senate District needs a strong Democratic representative in the State Senate. I have life-long Democratic credentials, a 27-year career as a lawyer, and 5 years of service on the Greenwich Board of Estimate and Taxation.
My grandfather, H. Allen Barton, was the last Democrat to hold this seat (from 1930-1932). He served us proudly and well, and I intend to meet the high bar that he set 80 years ago.
Resume
Retired (since 2003)
• Member of the Board of Estimate and Taxation of the Town of Greenwich (since 2006) – This is the Town Finance Board, responsible for promulgating the annual budget (currently about $350 million), setting the property tax rate, and overseeing all Town financial matters.
• Board President, Child Guidance Center of Southern Connecticut, Inc. (2009- ) – I have been a member of the Board of Directors since 2001, and currently serve as the Board President, of the Child Guidance Center, a non-profit organization that provides mental health services to children, adolescents, and their families. The Child Guidance Center supports the needs of families in Stamford, Greenwich, Darien, and New Canaan.

+ Senior Vice President, General Counsel & Secretary (1995-2003) – I was responsible for all of the legal affairs of GE’s diversified financial services business. When I left at the beginning of 2003, GE Capital had $490 billion of assets, $58 billion in revenues, and $3.6 billion net income. As General Counsel, I managed global mergers and acquisitions, litigation, regulatory affairs, legal and policy compliance, and government relations, and oversaw a Law Department of 450 lawyers world-wide.

"Nancy Barton is no shrinking violet," said William Finger, who serves on the BET with Barton and nominated her Monday in the Cone Meeting Room at Town Hall. "When you're on the other side of an issue with Nancy, you'd better be prepared to up your game."
Barton, 59, who was elected to the BET in 2005, worked as an attorney for more than 30 years and retired in 2003 after serving as general counsel for GE Capital in Stamford. She also serves as board president for theChild Guidance Center of Southern Connecticut, which provides mental health services to children, adolescents and their families....

Democratic Town Committee chairman Frank Farrickersaid Barton has extensive experience with budgeting and financial oversight.
"She has a good sense of the community," Farricker said before the nominating convention. "She knows what's important. It's not about balancing the budget on the backs of the poor, but it's about taking steps to make sure this town gets well-represented.".....

"In the last 20 years, we've gone from 2 percent of the state budget to 15 percent of the budget coming from Greenwich," Farricker said. "We've been represented exclusively by Republicans, so I just wonder how people think it helped them. The answer is, it hasn't."
Frantz said Monday he welcomes the challenge from Barton.
"I think it furthers the whole purpose of democracy," Frantz said. "It highlights all of the important issues that everyone should be paying attention to. There's nothing like good competition."
Democrats will nominate their candidates for the 149th, 150th and 151st House districts at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Town Hall.
