A settlement between the town and five police officers who sued the town, alleging they were discriminated against because of their military service, passed one hurdle as the Board of Selectmen unanimously approved the deal Thursday.
The deal calls for the town to pay Sgt. Robert Berry $20,000 and promote him to lieutenant on Nov. 1. Four other town police officers involved in the lawsuit will each receive $10,000. The town also will pay the plaintiffs' legal costs of $25,000, Tesei said.....
.....The other officers in the lawsuit are Patrolman Sean O'Donnell, Sgt. Kraig Gray, Lt. James Heavey and retired Detective Terry McCue.
O'Donnell praised Tesei for his role in ending the litigation.
"Mr. Tesei has been forceful in getting this resolved," he said. "I hope the settlement will be accepted."
As part of the deal, Tesei said town staff and managers will receive training on the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act, a federal law that ensures those who have served in the military are not disadvantaged in their civilian careers because of their service, are promptly re-employed upon their return from duty and are not discriminated against in employment based on their past, present or future military service
