Service fair gives people hope and help
By Lisa Chamoff
Staff Writer

Until recently, Rebecca had the classic upper-middle-class Greenwich life -- a six-figure job in mergers and acquisitions, living with her teenage son in the Pemberwick section of town.

But, since getting laid off last September, the 43-year-old has temporarily moved in with her parents as a bank forecloses on her home.

Rebecca, who declined to give her last name to protect her son's privacy, was the kind of person the Greenwich Department of Social Services was hoping would come to an event it organized Friday.....

....Joe Barrios has been out of work for four months after 16 years doing home remodeling work. Two weeks ago, he went to the emergency room because he thought he was having a stroke.

ALSO TWO THUMBS UP TO FIRST SELECTMAN PETER TESEI AND THE OTHER TOWN EMPLOYEES WHO FOUND A WAY TO REACH OUT TO MEMBERS OF GREENWICH SOCIETY WHO ARE ON THE EDGE DURING THESE TOUGH ECONOMIC TIMES:

... Cyndie Martin, a 49-year-old Cos Cob resident, said that although she goes to the Greenwich Library almost every day, she didn't know about the classes and events there to help job-seekers. Martin was recently laid off from a large irrigation company, where she had worked in the accounts payable department.

"It gives you hope," said Martin, who had collected a shopping bag full of information during the event. "I will be walking out of here feeling empowered, and like there's a little team behind me.".....

Town asks court to deny Honulik appeal
Town attorneys have fired back at police Lt. Gary Honulik's request for the state Supreme Court to reconsider its February ruling against him in a promotion lawsuit.

In a recently filed motion with the court, the town claims Honulik's attorney Kathryn Emmett was wrong to suggest that one of the justices, who was past the mandatory retirement age of 70, should not have been allowed to rule on the case. The case stems from a lawsuit over whether Honulik was unjustly passed over for a promotion to captain in 2003.

Emmett called Justice Barry Schaller's participation "unconstitutional." ....

Irritating Greenwich Time Story #2
Proposal seeks to curb DUI on sea and land
Many Greenwich boaters are backing a new legislative proposal aiming to punish drunken offenders on both land and sea, regardless of where the violation occurs.

The bill would mean that motorists charged with driving while under the influence could not only lose their driving license, but their safe boating certificate as well, which is required to operate a boat. Boaters caught drinking while operating a vessel also would be at risk of losing their driver's license, according to the proposal.

"This would provide a greater deterrent for people and would be a definite step in a positive direction," said John Craine, chairman of the First Selectman's Coastal Resources Advisory Committee.......,
Comment:

Once Again Rookie Reporter Debra Friedman Has Regurgitated A Town Press Release And Only Has Quote From Town Employees....

.....Sgt. John Brown, head of the Greenwich Police's Marine Division agreed

"I think this is a great proposal," said Brown. "We encourage the public not to partake in drinking alcoholic beverages while operating a boat, but we do realize that it is part of the recreational activity."

Police said they have made very few drunken-operating arrests on boats in the last five years but are always on the lookout and felt this law would make boaters take the issue more seriously. The division patrols the coastline year round, working 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. during the summer.....

For The Record:

Greenwich Roundup Agrees With Both Sgt. John Brown And John Craine And Supports This New Law.

Officials ask people to stay out of bat caves
ALBANY, N.Y.
By Michael Hill -- Associated Press-- Citing an "unprecedented" crisis of bats dying off from West Virginia to New England, federal officials on Thursday asked for people to stay out of thousands of caves in states struck by "white-nose syndrome.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service made the request to guard against the possibility that people are unwittingly spreading the mysterious affliction when they explore multiple caves. There is no evidence that white nose is a threat to people.

Named for the sugary smudges of fungus on the noses and wings of hibernating bats, white-nose bats appear to run through their winter fat stores before spring. It was confirmed in eight states this winter from New Hampshire to West Virginia and there is evidence it may have spread to Virginia, according to wildlife service spokeswoman Diana Weaver....
