NEW CANAAN -- Rep. Jim Himes, D-4, spoke to a crowd of supporters -- and one vocal detractor -- Monday afternoon on the steps of Town Hall about the controversy surrounding President Barack Obama's back-to-school speech, framing the issue as a debate over the free exchange of information.
"Do we want our children shielded from the development of thoughtfulness and critical thinking?" Himes said, after discounting allegations the speech contained a political agenda. "That's not the America that all of us know and it's certainly not what we think of as education."
Himes told the audience of a few dozen that he chose to address the issue from New Canaan because the town drew attention from the national media. On Sunday, the decision by New Canaan Public Schools to view and discuss the televised presidential speech before showing it to elementary school children drew criticism from panelists on "Meet the Press."
"It sounds like East Germany trying to form some restrictions on people leaving the eastern sector to go into the western sector," NBC newscaster Tom Brokaw said during the show, according to a transcript.
Brokaw has a home in Pound Ridge, N.Y., which borders New Canaan......

Newly installed Greenwich Public Schools superintendent Dr. Sidney Freund has decided to cave in to exactly ten right-wing crazies and to refuse to air President Obama's live broadcast to Greenwich students on Tuesday. Dr. Freund stated that students will not view the broadcast live as scheduled, but "at a date to be determined".
According to Superintendent Freund, he decided to postpone viewing the president's address "primarily (because the) school district needs time to ensure that technical capacity is in place."
Yet that assertion appears to be false, since a Greenwich Time article quotes Freund as stating that he spent 30% to 40% of his time last week dealing with this issue.
Clearly he had time to deal with the technical issues surrounding the viewing, especially given that the school system was able to arrange for live viewing of President Obama's inauguration in January. He also put forth the excuse that he needed to have an "instructional team" develop "age-appropriate activities to accompany viewing of the president's address."
What a crock! The president didn't ask school systems to come up with activities to accompany the address, but merely to permit American students to view the address on Tuesday.
According to Greenwich Time, Dr. Freund received exactly ten- yes, ten- emails protesting permitting students to hear their president address them, and five in favor of preparing the schools to permit students to view the address. Those few communications spurred Dr. Freund to engage in "careful consideration of all perspectives", after which he decided to pull the plug on the president of the United States.
In essence, it only takes a tiny handful of crazies to make new superintendent Freund act like the head of a school system in Alabama, or the Texas panhandle, or some other place full of uneducated, right-wing extremists. There is little excuse for Dr. Freund's cop-out, because he served for years in nearby Dobbs Ferry, New York.
And Congressman Jim Himes thinks Superintendent Freund is full of crap also. Congressman Himes issued the following statement on Sunday night:
"As a Congressman and as a father to two young girls (who attend Greenwich public schools), I urge all local schools to provide their students the chance to listen to the President's address to school children on Tuesday. Denying children the rare opportunity to hear directly from their President is a disservice to them as students and as young citizens. The President will encourage students to do what we all know is right: to work hard to prepare themselves to be successful citizens in the greatest democracy in the world.
"Whether we agree or disagree with everything the President says, this is a rare chance for classes and families to discuss and debate the President's speech and to develop the thoughtfulness and critical faculties necessary for success in an increasingly complex and challenging world."
It is all the more shameful, because Dr. Freund couched his language announcing that students would not be permitted to view the Tuesday address in language suggesting that they would:
"District to View President's Address to Students", was the title of his press release. He also states, "this is a teachable moment", but just not on the scheduled day of Tuesday, apparently. Yet the truth was precisely the opposite.
And, according to the Greenwich Time article, Connecticut's State Commissioner of Education Mark K. McQuillan: sent a memo to school superintendents Friday calling the controversy over the president's speech 'truly unfortunate,' 'inaccurate' and 'beyond the definition of responsible civil discourse'"
When the state superintendent of schools refers to postponing viewing of the president's address "beyond the definition of responsible discourse", and our United States congressman calls it a "disservice" to our young people, you know that Dr. Freund has come to a lousy decision.
Will Greenwich students be shown the president's address "at a date to be determined"?
Frankly, I doubt it. A couple more right-wing nutjobs will send him emails, and he'll determine that it has to be put off yet again for another to be conjured up reason.
It is a very bad beginning for the new Greenwich Public Schools superintendent. Too bad, because he's the seventh superintendent in just over ten years.

Greenwich Democratic Town Committee chairman Dave Roberson has sent emails urging Democrats and other non-nutjobs to contact the school system and Dr. Freund and demand that he do the decent thing and permit the President of the United States to address the students of Greenwich, Connecticut. Let's hope that he understands what a shameful decision he's made, and in the hours before noon on Tuesday relent and do the right thing.
Too bad that Dr. Freund couldn't display the good sense and courage of his counterpart in Westport. But he still has 24 hours to reconsider. Let's hope he does.

Pedestrian Safety Operation
On Thursday September 3, 2009, the Greenwich Police Department Traffic
Enforcement Unit along with the Community Impact Section conducted a
Pedestrian Safety Operation on Mason Street at the intersection of
Fawcett Place and Milbank Avenue.
The focus of the enforcement effort was motorists failing to yield to
pedestrians trying to cross the street in the two clearly marked
crosswalks. In addition, those motorists using a cell phone while
driving were also stopped. The enforcement operation consists of a
plainclothes police officer acting as a pedestrian trying to cross the
street, in the clearly marked crosswalk, and then observing which cars
stop and which do not. Uniformed officers, in radio contact with the
plainclothes officer, pull over those motorists that do not stop down
the street.
The effort was a result of numerous complaints received by the Police
Department concerning the problems encountered at that location by
pedestrians trying to cross Mason St by utilizing the crosswalk. The
results of this morning’s effort are as follows:
(3) Stop sign violations
(7) Cell phone violations
(18) Failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
28 total citations issued
These, and other efforts will continue as the Department strives to
respond to the public in attempting to make the Town of Greenwich safer
for pedestrians and motorists. As of this date, motor vehicle collisions
are down almost 10% for 2009 as opposed to the same time period in 2008.
S.T.E.P. Focus Results August 2009
During the month of August 2009, the Greenwich Police Department
focused their efforts on enforcing Failure to Yield violations throughout the
Town of Greenwich.
The Greenwich Police Department wrote 29 citations during the month
of August 2009 specifically for Failure to Yield violations throughout Town.
Last year for the month of August 2008 24 Failure to Yield citations were
issued.
During the month of August 2008 148 motor vehicle accidents were
reported on Town roads. For the same period this year, only 119 accidents
were reported, which is a 24% decrease for the month of August.
The Traffic Enforcement Focus for the month of September 2009 will be
Speeding violations. Especially as children return to school all across
Town, motorists are encouraged to obey the speed limit. Patrol officers and
the Traffic Enforcement Unit will be concentrating their efforts around
school zones.

MTA derails iPhone application - Greenwich TimeApple has yanked a Greenwich Internet developer's iPhone application from its iTunes App Store after the Metropolitan Transportation Authority asked the company to stop distributing the program, .....
.....The creator of the application was Greenwich resident Chris Schoenfeld, a blogger and creator of stationstops.com ....
....."All the application developers will worry if the MTA will come after them next and sue them for royalties," Schoenfeld said. "The question remains whether the MTA is seeking to engage developers into licensing contracts or trying to scare them out of developing MTA apps."
Before its removal, Schoenfeld's iPhone application sold for a $2.99 fee since October, and it provided commuters with access to MTA train and bus schedules.......
Schoenfeld created StationStops.com three years ago to address service problems on Metro-North Railroad. It includes his posts about technology, entertainment and some local issues.
The MTA sent Schoenfeld a mid-August cease-and-desist letter after he delayed a licensing contract that would have given the authority 10 percent of his profits. Schoenfeld said he disagreed with the MTA's request for $5,000 in advance royalties. He said it is noteworthy that the MTA backed off an earlier claim that its schedule information was copyrighted intellectual property.
Schoenfeld said the iPhone application does not violate copyright, because it displayed and disseminated the schedule information differently from paper schedules.
"There was no way that it violated a copyright at all because it is a different digital form," Schoenfeld said.
