01/02/07 - Why are there so many Bank Robberies In Downtown Old Greenwich?

Ridberg said he does not know why two robberies have taken place in downtown Old Greenwich since the fall.

"I can't really think of why it would be more attractive an area to target a bank than anywhere else," Ridberg said.

Maybe, because Old Greenwich residents and out of town criminals can set their watches by watching when the Old Greenwich Patrol car goes to sit on Putnam Avenue to look for burned out car tail lights.

Like Byram, Old Greenwich needs effective and aggressive business district patrols.

01/11/08 - This What The Welcome Sign To Byram Looked Like Before Mike Bocchinoke Became President Of The Byram Nieghborhood Association

Crimes prompt call to add patrols in Byram
Oct 7, 2007 Stamford Advocate

By Martin B. Cassidy
Stamford Advocate

Spurred by recurring cycles of burglaries, vandalism, and other crimes in their neighborhood, Byram leaders want the town to put more police officers on patrol in their neighborhood.

Recent crimes ranging from a home invasion on Byram Road, to a wave of 26 car break-ins in Byram this spring and a spate of gang-related graffiti from December to May of this year have prompted concerns about safety, Byram Neighborhood Association President Michael Bocchino said.

The tires slashed on more than two dozen cars on South Water Street overnight last Saturday reflects a fearless attitude among vandals and criminals visiting or living in Byram, Bocchino said.

'We're hopeful the town realizes that the communities need more police presence,' Bocchino said. 'I'm damn well sure this western end of town is in need of some more police presence, whether it be Byram, Glenville, Pemberwick, Chickahominy, or wherever.' ....

'I don't go up to the other end of South Water Street now because of all the roughnecks,' Lawrence M. Finnigan, a resident of South Water Street said. 'In some ways Byram is becoming like Bridgeport with all the roughnecks.'

One of the tire slashing victims, Omar Silva, also a South Water Street resident, said the act has raised his concerns about how safe the area is.

'Until this weekend I wasn't worried, but now I am more concerned about it,' Silva said.
Finnigan said an extra patrol car passing through Byram on an hourly basis would probably help curb nighttime vandalism and problems with youth.

'It wouldn't hurt to have a patrol car coming through more often,' Finnigan said. 'Sometimes all you have to do is swing by.'

Ideally residents would like to see police create a substation at the Byram Volunteer Fire Department on Delavan Avenue to respond to calls, Bocchino said.

.....Despite the apparent gang references in the graffiti and some disruptive and wayward teens in downtown Byram on weekend nights, police feel juvenile problems in the area are not the result of gang activity, Ridberg said.

'There were some indications that the graffiti was gang-related and as far back as two years ago we started doing gang intelligence in Byram,' Ridberg said. 'We were aggressive in trying to crack down on social problems down there, and we don't think it's the result of gangs.'

Bocchino said the Byram Neighborhood Association plans to put the question about safety in Byram to candidates for the Board of Selectmen in an upcoming debate.

'It's definitely something which we will bring to the candidates in the upcoming election,' Bocchino said. 'People are angry and frustrated and want action.'

Now Just 93 Days Later Byram Neighborhood Association President Mike "The Flip Flopper" Bocchino has changed his tune and sold out the residents of Byram.

Today in The Greenwich Time Mike "The Flip Flopper" Says....

"As for the Greenwich Police Department, I personally and publicly thank Chief David Ridberg and his officers, especially Sgt. Mike Reynolds, Officers Keith Hirsch, Antonio Rivera and Robert McKiernan, and Detective Mark Zuccerella, for all of their outstanding work in the Byram community and the entire town of Greenwich.

Let's face facts: The world is changing and things are not as they once were. As the population around us grows and with our proximity to New York, our town will unfortunately continue to see its share of vandalism and crime, like it or not"

In the last 93 days Byram has had even more vandalism and gang graffiti.

Worse yet, Byram residents have been mugged near Johnny Cakes.

Byram is going down the tubes, because we have leaders like Mike "the flip flopper" Bocchino.

Mike "The Flip Flopper" Bocchino has forgotten all about his show boating for the Greenwich time calling for more police patrols and a police substation in Byram.

Just 93 days ago Mike "The Flip Flopper" Bocchino was telling reporter Martin B. Cassidy.....

'People are angry and frustrated and want action.'

- Mike "The Flip Flopper" Bocchino
October 7th

Now Mike "The Flip Flopper" Bocchino says ...

"As the population around us grows and with our proximity to New York, our town will unfortunately continue to see its share of vandalism and crime, like it or not. "

01/10/08 - There Was A Very Nice Lady On WGCH That Briefly Spoke About My Wife's Store

There was a nice sounding lady that said my wife's store did not have the proper paperwork for a sign in her window.

The facts are that Greenwich Police Officer DiPretro and three other officers came to my wives store and stayed about an hour just before I was getting to call the Greenwich Matters show hosted by Sam Romeo on WGCH. I had posted on this blog that I intended to complain about the poor performance of the police in Byram.

Police Officer DiPietro made some comments that indicated that his and the other officers presence was in retaliation, because I had exercised my right to Free Speech on this blog and was going to reiterate my complaints about Byram Police Officers on the Radio.

Officer DiPretro illegally searched non-public backrooms of the store and I had to call 911 three times to end the illegal search and get Officer Dipretro out of my wife's store.

Later, Officer DiPretro angrily began writing up a ticket for my wives store. A Greenwich Police Sargent Moran ordered DiPretro to withdraw the ticket.

The out of control Officer Dipretro argued with Sargent Moran about the ticket.

And I would just like to mention that it is only alleged that my wife needed this paper work or did not have this paper work. Actually, it is very hard to respond to the allegation, because my has not been charged with anything or issued any ticket at all.

Moreover, what Greenwich Police Officials are failing to mention is that my wife has three letters from Greenwich Town Officials giving her permission for the signage.
What happened in my wife's store on December 27th was not about a sign. It was about trying to intimidate and silence a Greenwich Police Department Critic.

If this had been about a sign, there would not have been a problem.

Greenwich Police Officer DiPretro would have written a ticket for the alleged sign violation.

Then we would have either paid the ticket or went to see a judge who would have determined if there was a violation.

There would have been no illegal searches, no 911 calls, no police misconduct complaints, no improper police investigations, no threats of arrest or harassment of my wife or myself.

There would be no threats to my landlord and no illegal demands that I resign from my Greenwich Legislative seat.

This was not about a sign, this about silencing a police critic.

In fact in early December, Greenwich Police Officer Dipetro gave us a ticket as we were loading merchandise in our car. He even made similar comments as he issued the ticket.

We took Officer DiPretro's ticket to a hearing and spoke with an independent person and Officer's DiPetro's ticket was thrown out.

There were no illegal searches, no 911 calls, no police misconduct complaints, no improper police investigations, no threats of arrest or harassment of my wife or myself. There were no threats to my landlord and no illegal demands that I resign from my Greenwich Legislative seat.

Because Officer DiPretro, wrote a ticket and left.

However, on December 27th, Officer DiPretro did not come in the store with a bunch of police officers and conduct an illegal search just before I was going to go on WGCH and complain about him.

This is why for two weeks I have tried to meet with First Selectman Peter Tesei to explain these facts and to get rid of malicious police rumors spread about my dear wife and I.

Like the false, malicious, libelous, Slanderous and untrue lie that I am not a resident of Greenwich and do not live in RTM District 4.

The facts are that I live in a residential unit that has a nonconforming use exemption. The unit is in a residential building in a residential zone of Greenwich.

My tenancy is month to month and the CL&P Bill and other utility bills are addressed to Apartment 1 Front. The CL&P Bill has came that was for over 30 years, I am told.

The former owner of the building lived in the space and operated a business long before any current zoning regulations applied to the property.

Moreover, If there is a question about the certificate of occupancy (CO) there is nothing I can do about it. Only the landlord can apply for or fix the CO. The tenant has no say in the buildings CO what-so-ever.

Now the Town Of Greenwich has two options.

Number one, they can arbitrarily throw me in the street and Connecticut State law says the Town must find me housing in Town and this will expose the Town Of Greenwich to a civil suit from my wife and I.

Number two, the Town can cite my Landlord and let an independent housing court judge decide if the Town is right or if my landlord is right. If my landlord is wrong then the housing court judge will come to a fair and equitable solution between my landlord and I. The judge might tell me leave in 24 hours or 24 days. Who Knows?

If the housing judge says my landlord is right, then the Town Of Greenwich would have the right to appeal the judges ruling.

Solution number two is the most fair, because it puts any decision in the hands of an independent judge in Norwalk who will not be pressured by local politics or the police department.

No one is going to be stupid enough to tell the judge if this Byram Legislator does not resign his seat, we are going to retaliate against him and his landlord.

01/10/08 - Sam Romeo Let Me Come On The Greenwich Matters Show And Let Me Try And Tell My Side Of The Story.

There Were A Few Byram Residents That Thought That Sam Romeo Was A Little Too Bit Aggressive In His Argument That The Greenwich Police Department Should Not Be Accountable To The Citizens Of Greenwich. However, I Thought Sam Was Fair And Appreciated That He Let Me Come On His "Greenwich Matters Show" On WGCH.

Sam Opened The Show Talking About Former Greenwich Police Detective Paulo

If I had a critism it would be that local callers wanting to talk about local issues were rushed and Sam spent about 60 % of the show talking about national issues like The New Hapshire, Voter Fraud Cases, ACORN, Hillary, The Iraq War, Tax Policy, Gas Prices, All Gore And His Film, an Inconvenient Truth, Etc., etc....

Plus Sam spent a great deal of time going on about a book called Ron Brown's Body.

However, for the most part Sam let me say what I wanted to say on WGCH.

Sam praised Town Officials and the Greenwich Police Department as being fair and open.

Yet a couple of callers complained of a lack of transparency in Greenwich Government. In fact one of Sam's friends named Chris spoke of all of the trouble that Sam and he had from Greenwich Government over the years. Chris and Sam mentioned how they had both been attacked by Greenwich Governmental Officials over the years.

Chris even said that his phone line was tapped and he received Death Threats over his past views about the Cos Cob School.
The Good News Is I Have Not Had My Phone Tapped Or Recieved Death Threats,

Sam even argued that he did expect a fair public hearing concerning the sewer. In fact Sam was trying to Organize a walk out in protest of the public hearing. Moreover, Sam expected things to be so one sided at this Greenwich Public hearing that his Golden WGCH Microphone was not enough.

So he contacted Cablevision's News Center 12 program to cover the Public Hearing For the sewer.

It appears That Sam and Chris are proving my point that Greenwich Government In General and The Greenwich Police Department In Particular need to become more accountable and transparent.

Unfortunately, Greenwich Is A- Go Along To Get Along type of Government That Has A Nasty Reputation Of Those Who May Disagree.

01/10/08 - It looks Like The Town Of Greenwich Is Backing Off It's Threat To Raid My Home And Will Let Me Call The "Greenwich Matters" Show On WGCH

It's About 45 Minutes To The Airing Of The "Greenwich Matters" Show Hosted By Sam Romeo And I Am Nervously Hoping That The Greenwich Police Department Will Not Prevent Me From Exercising My Right To Free Speech.

There Have Been Threats And They Have Even Be Delivered While I Was Talking To WGCH Reporter Dima Joseph. Dima Recorded An Interview Right After The Threats Of A Raid On My Home.

I Have Let My Wife Stay With A Friend In Port Chester This Afternoon In Case The Town Goes Through With It's Threat.

Things are looking up as I prepare to speak to Sam Romeo on Greenwich Matters.

David Cafferelli who is in the Lieutenant Governors Office was going to meet with Governor Rell's Chief Of Staff and get back to me about the problems I have been Having. Mr. Cafferelli said that he would be calling me tomorrow.

There were some folks in Byram that have said that Sam Romeo wont let you speak about the Police misconduct incident, but I don't believe that they are right.

Sure Sam is very opinionated and a very Strong and able debtor who can easily dominate a conversation. But if you listen Mr. Romeo always offers to let those that he criticized to come on his show and tell their side of the story.

I have never heard anyone willing to take up Mr. Romeo's challenge to come on his show, but you have to admit he always offers the opportunity.

The residents of Byram who do agree that Sam Romeo will allow me to speak about Police misconduct say that I will not do to well against the political debating skills of Mr. Romeo.

Sam who demands accountability in every Greenwich Governmental Department except the Greenwich Police Department will probably dominate the conversation and kick my butt, but I am not too worried because I am right about this.

This is not a matter of supporting or not supporting the Greenwich Police Department. My wife has a six year old car and it's covered with six years of Silver Shield Police Union and Greenwich Fire Department stickers. We have never turned down the Silver Shield.

I support the Police, but I also want accountability from those that I support.

Tonight, I am going to try and tell Sam about the poor police coverage Byram. The Cars That Are Constantly Broken into and vandalised in Byram, as well as, the muggings near the Mill Street Bridge. The Gang tags on the Welcome to Greenwich Byram sign and drinking from open containers in public park space.

I then want to tell Sam about all of the Police Lieutenants, Detectives and Police Officers that have been sent to my store, employers, mailbox, landlord and God only knows where else during the last two weeks.

They even enlisted the help of Brian McMahon of Port Chester to get involved in their smear campaign.

Maybe, this deployment of police officers against me is why the the vandalism that Byram routinely experiences has spread to Cos Cob, Glenville and Mianus. If officers are spending a good part of their time following and verbally attacking a Police Critic, they are not patrolling the neighborhood streets of Greenwich.

Then I want to tell him about the Town employees visiting my Landlord once again and demanding that he get me to resign from the RTM or he will be retaliated against.

I then want to tell Sam about the Big shot Republican that lives in district 11 on Clapridge Road, but checked into the Delmar Hotel the night, before the election so that he could use the Hotel as an address to run and bump a democrat of the district 2 RTM.

I will also tell Sam about the owners of Champion Fuel that sit on my RTM district 4 legislative body even though they live at Lafayette Court which is near the United Way Offices at the Top Of Greenwich Avenue. The Town website even lists 2 Lafayette Court as their official residence.

The I want to tell Sam Romeo how RTM Leaders Tom Byrne and Joan Caldwell have both said they had no problem with my taking my Legislative Seat in district 4 Byram so long as I Had Slept in Byram the night before the election.

Not only did I sleep in Byram before the night before the election. At 4 am on election morning I was sworn in as a Greenwich Election Official and served the voters of Greenwich for 18 hours that day. Moreover, the Town recently, called me in to be sworn in again to be a Greenwich Election Official for the audits of districts 5 and 7.

Further, I am scheduled to be once again sworn in February to serve as a Greenwich Election Official again.

I then want to tell Sam that I live in a residential unit that has a nonconforming use exemption. The unit is in a residential building in a residential zone of Greenwich. My tenancy is month to month and the CL&P Bill and other utility bills are addressed to Apartment 1 Front.

The former owner of the building lived in the space and operated a business long before any current zoning regulations applied to the property.

Moreover, I want to tell Sam that if there is a question about the certificate of occupancy (CO) there is nothing I ca do about it.

No one is going to be stupid enough to tell the judge if this Byram Legislator does not resign his seat, we are going to retaliate against him and his landlord.

I hope Sam will listen to all the facts surrounding this issue before he begins his arguments in support of the Greenwich Police Department not being held accountable to the public.

01/10/07 - Town Of Greenwich Threatens Police Department Critic's Landlord Again

This a very digital world, phone calls, emails and other website visits are logged and admissible in court. All of the phone calls to the Police Department Critic have left digital finger prints that point to unethical and illegal behaviour in Peter Tesei's Administration.

POLICE CRITIC'S LANDLORD'S PHONE CONVERSATION IS OVER HEARD BY WGCH REPORTER DIMA JOSEPH.

The Town Of Greenwich Once Again Came To A Police Department Critic's Landlord Offices And Said That His Home Would Be Raided This Afternoon.

The Town Employees Demanded That The Landlord Have The Police Department Critic Resign From His District 4 Greenwich Legislative Seat.

The Police Department Critic Was Called By His Landlord While Being Interviewed By WGCH 1490 AM Reporter Dima Joseph.

The Harassed Landlord Said That He Had A lot Of Property And Needed To Get Permits For His Byram Based Fuel Business.

Further, The Harassed Landlord Told The Police Critic That If He Went To The Assistant To The Republican Register Of Voter's And Resigned His Legislative Seat The Police And The Police And Town Would Leave Both Of Them Alone.

WGCH Reporter Dima Joseph Finished Taping The Interview With The Police Critic And Greenwich Legislator And Is Now Calling Police Chief Ridberg About The Threats As I Post This.

First Selectman And Police Commissioner Peter Tesei's Office Has Been Repeatedly Called About The Town Register's Office Abuses As Well As The Police Department's Continued Misconduct And Abuse.

As I Stated Yesterday In This Blog The Police Critic Is Going To Call The Sam Romeo Show at 6pm Tonight To Talk About The Matter On "Greenwich Matters"

Since First Selectman And Police Commissioner Peter Tesei Has Proven To Be A Weak And Ineffectual Leader That Lacks Real Life Management Experience The Citizens Of Greenwich Can Trust, This May All End Up In A Federal Civil Rights Lawsuit.

First Selectman And Police Commissioner Peter Tesei Could End The Town And Police Department Civil Rights Abuses Today If Wanted To.

Earth To Peter Tesei. Earth To Peter Tesei. This Police Critic Is Not Resigning From His RTM District 4 Legislative Seat.

Why Is Veronica Musca, Republican Registrar of Voters, Town of Greenwich Getting Involved In This Police Department Misconduct And Abuse Case.

Did Veronica Musca, Republican Registrar of Voters, Town of Greenwich, Forget That Her Office Has Sworn Me In Twice In The In The Last Two Months As An Election Official In The Town Of Greenwich?

Did Veronica Musca, Republican Registrar of Voters, Town of Greenwich, Forget That She Cut Two Town Of Greenwich Checks To Me For Providing Services To Her Office?

But Now Veronica Musca, Republican Registrar of Voters, Town of Greenwich Office Threatens By Landlord And Illegally Demands That I Resign From The RTM Seat I Duly And Rightly Elected Too.

Is Veronica Musca, Republican Registrar of Voters, Town of Greenwich Violating State Ethics Laws And Federal Civil Rights Laws With Her Harassment Of A Police Critics Landlord.

01/09/08 - Now Police Commissioner Peter Tesei And Police Chief David Ridberg Are Using Port Chester'sBrien McMahon To Silence A Police Critic

There Have Been A Hundred Projects That The Town Of Greenwich And The Village Of Port Chester Have Been Unable To Work On Cooperatively.

But the one thing they can work on together is another attempt to silence a critic of the Greenwich Police Department and how they serve Byram.

The Greenwich Republicans Have Enlisted The Help Of Port Chester Republican Big Shot Brien McMahon To Visit 10 Pearl Street In Port Chester In Attempt To Silence A Greenwich Police Critic.

This is okay with me, because the little white haired buffoon will soon be deposed, just like Robert McKnight and his bogus three month old anonymous letter.

And I Got News For First Selectman Tesei And The Greenwich Police Department the weak McMahon and the unbelievable McKnight are not going to lie at a deposition for a Federal Civil Rights Lawsuit and end up with some prison time.

These two guys are going to squeal like the little pigs that they are.

It is just not clear if these two will implicate Mr. Tesei when they start squealing in their depositions.

01/09/08 - Governor M. Jodi Rell Fails To Investigate A Connecticut Inspector That Was The Cause Of Three 911 Calls Durring A 20 Minute Period

Mary Jodi Rell is a politician who has refused to start and investigation of one of a State of Connecticut Inspectors who caused three 911 calls to be made during a 20 minute period.

She had been the Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut until Governor John G. Rowland resigned during a corruption investigation. Rell has promised the citizens of Connecticut a transparent government that will tolerate no wrong doing by government employees.

One of Rell's inspectors came to a Greenwich Business and was told that a court order would be needed if he wanted to make the inspection with the Greenwich Police Department. I explianed to to the inspector all about the police misconduct and the first amendment rights violations.

Connecticut Inspector Bob Makano refused to accept this and illegally harassed and trespassed at the doorway of business.

There were threats of the illegal arrests to myself.

Three 911 calls had to be made to the Greenwich Police Department To Get Connecticut Inspector Bob Nakano to leave peaceably.

Why hasn't the complaint about the State Inspector been taken or the 911 and Police Radio Tapes, been requested from the Greenwich Police Department by Governor Rell or anyone else in Connecticut Government?

Governor Rell's office has been called about the inspector three times yet no one in the office is willing or able to take ownership of the investigation of the State Inspector.

Perhaps Republican Governor Rell does not want any investigations involving the very Republican Town Of Greenwich?

Why hasn't the 911 tapes involving this inspector been requested by Governor Rell's Office or by anyone else in State Government?

It is time for Governor Rell's Office To Get The 911 Tapes And Police Radio Recordings From The Greenwich Police Department And Take Action Against Connecticut Inspector Bob Nakano before he violates the rights of others.

01:09/08 - Peter Tesei Lied On WGCH When He Said He Would Meet Anybody About Anything

Two Weeks Ago First Selectman And Police Commissioner Peter Tesei went on his WGCH radio show and said he will meet with anyone about anything.

So I went to his office and left my name and said that I would like to meet with Mr.Tesei about Police Misconduct and the need for an independent civilian police complaint board.

Further, I wanted to meet with him about the poor police coverage in the Byram section of Town.

Mr. Tesei was going to get back to me. I got no call.

I went back to Mr.Tesei's office and Mr. Tesei's Secretary tells me the lost the note.

So again I ask for another appointment, and I am told that I Will be called.

So I go back to the office and I am told that Mr. Tesei will meet with me on anything except Police Misconduct and the need for an independent civilian police complaint board. Moreover, Mr. Tesei will not talk about poor police coverage in the Byram section of Town.

Well the media started asking Mr. Tesei why he would not meet with me about these issues and he started saying once again he would meet with me, but with a few conditions.

Still no meeting occurs.

I bumped in to Mr. Tesei at Greenwich Town Hall ans in front of Joan Caldwell he said he would meet with me about Police Misconduct and the need for an independent civilian police complaint board. Moreover, Mr. Tesei will not talk about poor police coverage in the Byram section of Town.

Mr. Tesei responded that he would be calling me in a day or two, but still there is no call for a meeting. In fact it was 15 days ago.

Why is Peter Tesei avoiding a meeting me about the Greenwich Police Department?

The way that Mr. Tesei is avoiding me you would think that he thinks that I want to talk about that relative short marriage to Doctor Conboys daughter and how he later sued them for alimony.

Listen Peter I Don't Want To Talk To You About Gold Digger's and Six Week Old Marriages That End In Divorce.

I just want to talk to you about the Greenwich Police Department and Byram.

01/09/08 - One Again I Am Goning To Try And Call The Sam Romeo Show On WGCH

The 1st Amendment Will Once Again Be Put To The Test In Greenwich.

Will Peter Tesei His Police Department Try And Silence A Police Critic On Thursday?

Tomorrow the Sam Romeo will be hosting the Greenwich Matters Show on WGCH and I am going to try and once again to exercise my constitutionally protected right to free speech.

I am going to try and speak to Sam about the police coverage in Byram, as well as, need for an independent police complaint review board.

Then I am going to try and talk to Sam about the three Greenwich lawbreakers.

The inexperienced and untrustworthy Police Commissioner Peter Tesei, who is also know as, "Lash Light" or a softer and prettier version of Jim Lash.

The overpaid Greenwich Police Chief David "Get Me Mark Furman To Solve This Kissel Murder" Ridberg.

The illegally appointed Greenwich Police Captain Michael "I Don't Know How To Conduct A Proper Investigation" Pacewicz.

These three Greenwich Law Breakers now are going to appear before a FOI judge and are going to be fined for violating the law.

Yes, I am going to tell Sam about how these three police department mismanages broke Connecticut State Freedom Of Information Laws, by not responding to my request for copies of the 911 tapes when the police raided my store just before the last live Sam Romeo Show, which is called Greenwich Matters.

Now Sam might not be very receptive to my comments, because it seems that he demands accountability from every Greenwich Department except the Greenwich Police Department.

However, maybe Sam will change his mind when he learns about the Police Departments failure to respond to a Freedom Of Information Request for public documents. Sam has always stood up against anyone who did not respond to a Freedom Of Information Request for public documents.

So please listen to Greenwich Matters at 6:00 pm Thursday.

Greenwich Music Festival Wins National Award from Chamber Music America

Greenwich, CT – The Greenwich Music Festival was presented on January 5th with the prestigious Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming in a ceremony at the annual CMA conference. The award honors excellence and innovation within the field of chamber music. Past recipients include the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. The Greenwich Music Festival is the first and only organization in the state of Connecticut to receive this coveted national prize.

“It is a great honor, and the first national recognition for the work we are doing in town,” said Greenwich native and Artistic Director Ted Huffman. “We set out from the start to build something truly ground-breaking and dynamic. Too often in this country we operate under the assumption that leadership and innovation in the arts has to originate in urban centers like New York. Greenwich, with its combination of highly educated audiences, generous arts patrons, and excellent musical training in schools has proven an ideal place for our artists to live, share, and create.”

The award, sponsored jointly by Chamber Music America and The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers, is determined each year by a jury of industry leaders. The Greenwich Music Festival was chosen as this year’s festival recipient along with the Music Series at Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Representatives from both organizations spoke on a panel this weekend about innovative programming and the importance of new music.

“It was a wonderful feeling to know we had been chosen along with an organization (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) that has been in existence for decades and has a vastly larger budget,” said Huffman. “We’re also proud of the humble way we began and the rate at which we have grown. The first festival—held just four years ago in 2004--was produced with funds from the artists themselves. There were no salaries. We all wanted to be here. We all wanted to create this.”

Further proof that the GMF is already gaining an impressive national and international reputation is that on February 8th the Ravinia Festival, home to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, will present Mason Bates’ Red River, a work commissioned, developed, and premiered by GMF in the 2007 festival.

“We especially want to thank Charles and Deborah Royce,” said Huffman, “who underwrote the commission of Red River. Without their vision and generosity, we wouldn’t have had the means to produce this first commission, which was a very large and important step for our company.”

“Our goal now is to raise local awareness of our company. We realize that many music lovers in Greenwich and the surrounding communities have never heard of us, which I suppose is the challenge of every new company. We hope that in continuing to produce good work and attract new audiences we can change the perception that for the finest quality classical music you have to travel to New York.”

The festival invites a group of artists—musical, dramatic, and visual—to live, collaborate, and perform in Greenwich for one month each year. The artists live with host families, rehearse various projects, and bring outreach programs to local classrooms. The artists who receive GMF Residencies perform regularly as soloists with the finest opera companies, orchestra, and festivals around the world including the Metropolitan Opera, New York Philharmonic, and many others.

The festival was founded by baritone Ted Huffman and conductor Robert Ainsley. Huffman, a native of Greenwich, now lives in New York City and spends much of the year performing with opera companies and orchestras across the U.S. and Europe. Ainsley, having completed the Metropolitan Opera’a Lindemann Young Artist Program, is now Head of Music for Portland Opera in Oregon. He returns each year as Principal Conductor of the festival.

Plans for the 2008 season are under way. The festival will be anchored by three performances of Monteverdi’s rarely-heard masterpiece The Return of Ulysses. Additional programs will explore Monteverdi’s role in musical history as innovator and rebel.

“Monteverdi had a very public life-long battle with the musical establishment, in particular the critic Artusi. His catalogue of works is the best documentation we have of the musical revolution that took place between the Renaissance and the Baroque eras,” said Huffman. “His operas are strikingly modern and accessible; Ulysses teems with passion, comedy and tragedy all at once.”
