08/28/11 A Hurricane Irene Status Report From Deputy Police Chief Jim Heavey Of The Greenwich Police Department

This is Deputy Police Chief Jim Heavey of the Greenwich Police Department calling to update you with the latest status of Hurricane Irene - we are currently under a Greenwich State of Emergency and we are asking residents to remain in their homes unless you are under an emergency evacuation.

We are beginning to experience tidal flooding in the coastal and low lying areas - evacuations in Pemberwick and Old Greenwich have been under way. If you are experiencing an emergency life threatening situation - dial 911 - if non-emergency contact 203-622-8003.

We are aware of the significant road closures due to downed trees and utility wires. Priority is being given to opening North/South - East/West arteries for first responder use.

Shelters are open at the Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center at 449 Pemberwick Road and Eastern Middle School 51 Hendrie Avenue.

We expect to face winds in excess of 60MPH and major tidal flooding impact from 9AM through 5PM. Please stay tuned to local radio WGCH 1490AM for updates or through other local media outlets.

To listen to the above message, you will need audio software and speakers on your computer.
