Governor Dannel P. Malloy announced at 7 a.m. Sunday that the Merritt and Wilbur Cross parkways were closed to all traffic, but he conceded that state and local police could not block every entrance to the long, winding highways.
The state, he said, avoided the idea of erecting wooden horses to literally block the highway entrances because those horses would become "projectiles in 50 mile-an-hour wind.''

There is no precise timing on when the highways would be reopened, adding that they would reopen.
Malloy noted that Interstate 95 between Greenwich and Stonington was not closed, except to tractor trailers that were banned statewide at 7 am.
