Hurricane Irene has closed 60 roads around town, knocked trees into five houses and caused major flooding, especially on Route 1 in Western Greenwich. US1 manhole covers covers have popped off.

A fire engine is trapped on John Street at Riversville Road, with trees and wires down in front of and behind it.

There is major flooding at Grass Island and Bruce Park as Greenwich waits for the impending storm surge.

Greenwich emergency responders are being challenged to keep up with calls as the sun rises and people see more of the damage in town.
