FIRST PLACE AT CONNECTICUT SCIENCE FAIR

Qualifies for Prestigious International Science Fair

(For immediate release: Greenwich, CT – Wednesday, March 17, 2010)

Greenwich High School student, William Newberry was awarded first place in the Physical Science category at the Connecticut Science Fair last week at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, CT. William’s research project was entitled “Diatom CdS Nanostructures as a Method to Enhance the Efficiency of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells.” The State award qualifies William to attend the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in San Jose, CA in May 2010. This marks the fourth year in a row that Greenwich High School has been represented at this, the most prestigious pre-college International competition in the world.

The Connecticut Science Fair was held from March 9-13, and once again, Greenwich High School had the strongest presence of any high school in the state. Fourteen GHS students submitted their projects to the fair and of these, 12 students were selected as Finalists for the final day of judging. The Finalist group represents the top 10% of projects in the fair, and include the following Greenwich High School students: Victor Ansart, Hannes Buck, Jordana Cepelewicz, James Gordon & Kevin Ryan (Team), William Hallisey, Clayton Hardman, Marina Kaneko, Brian Miller, William Newberry, James O’Sullivan, and Felix Zhou.

In addition his First Place Award in the Physical Science category, William received additional awards totaling nearly $8000. These include:
• Dominion Scholarship for the most innovative project in the Physical Sciences --- $5000 Scholarship
• Dominion’s Millstone Power Station Physical Science Awards; 1st Place - Physical Science Senior High Individual - $500 & trophy
• CT Clean Energy Fund Alternative/Renewable Energy Awards; 3rd Place High School - $200, Trophy
• Goodrich Awards for Excellence In Engineering; 3rd Place- Engineering Senior High - $200 & Trophy
• United Technologies Corporation Awards; $500 in UTC Common Stock
• H. Joseph Gerber Medal of Excellence, an award of the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering in partnership with CCAT --- Physical Sciences Senior - $1,000, Solid Silver Medal of Excellence and Invitation to attend CASE’s Annual Meeting
• MIT Club of Hartford --- For excellence in energy related research, high school, $150 award
• The Coherent, Inc. Richard Hart Award for Excellence in Photonics --- $300, plaque

In addition, Greenwich High School students received top honors and special awards. These include:
• James Gordon/Kevin Ryan (team): 2nd Place in Computer Science Awards, $300 & Trophy, and the Intel Excellence in Computer Science Award, $200
• Hannes Buck: 4th place overall in Life Sciences Category; Trophy
• Clayton Hardman: 5th Place Overall in the Physical Science Category, Finalist in the Futures Sustainability & Audubon Environmental Awards
• James O’Sullivan: Air and Waste Management Association Award; $100, Alumni Botany Award; $50
• Jordana Cepelewicz: American Society of Safety Engineers Award; $100; Meyer & Young Woman Scientist Award; $300
• Felix Zhou: In addition to Felix’s 1st place finish at the Science Horizons Fair in early March, Felix received the Society for In Vitro Biology Award at the CT Science Fair.
