The latest Greenwich News Reports:
It's Leisurely and Filling. It Must Be Sunday Brunch. NOVELTIES At Avenida in Greenwich, where the décor is black and white with lime accents, Mexican brunch is à la carte. By PATRICIA BROOKS BRUNCH is one of those rare win-win situations. It combines a nutritious, expanded version of breakfast with the sociability of lunch or dinner, and because you know the total cost, more or less, in advance, there are no unpleasant surprises when the check arrives. Perfect for brief gatherings, especially when children are involved, brunch remains, in these uncertain times, one of the best values around. Following are a few of the many brunches to be found throughout the state that offer quite a bit more than the standard bacon and eggs.... .....For something completely different, consider a Mexican brunch at Avenida in Greenwich, sporting a stark black-and-white décor, with lime accents. Timid taste buds needn’t worry, there is plenty to choose from that isn’t incendiary — steak and eggs for one, French toast (with piloncila-cinnamon syrup and blood orange butter), or perhaps a burger with Chihuahua cheese, onions, tomato and avocado. The Mexican dishes, in my view, were not fiery — but very flavorful. Poblano eggs Benedict is served over grilled apple-smoked bacon on Chihuahua cornbread, along with poblano Hollandaise; cornbread makes a welcome change from English muffins and works well with the eggs. Then there are huevos rancheros (two fried eggs atop crisp corn tortillas, with black beans and apple chicken chorizo, all resting on a mild charred tomato salsa) and chicken chilaquiles (two sunnyside eggs on roasted chicken, with tortillas, Chihuahua cheese, onions and tomato in a tomatillo salsa). All starters we sampled had a pleasing snap — like crab cake (pan-seared with chipotle salsa and roasted corn salsita), nachos (with shredded roasted pork, Chihuahua cheese, tomatillo salsa and jalapeño) and a chunky, not quite bland guacamole. Avenida’s brunch is à la carte, with eight entrees from $10 to $14. When we were there, nearly all the tables were taken, which added to the lively atmosphere. Avenida, 339 Greenwich Avenue, Greenwich; avenidagreenwich.com or (203) 622-1400. Saturday and Sunday brunch: noon to 4 p.m. | ||
