12/26/08 Why Aren't These Volunteers Going To Springfield Missouri: The Queen City Of The Ozarks

Important Fundraising Road Trip: Skips

The Springfield That Gave Birth To Greenwich Roundup

WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

A political consultant, an engineer and a teacher started a nine-day road trip Thursday in an effort to raise money for children suffering from a rare form of cancer. Their starting point? Springfield, Neb.

By the end of the trip, the three hope to have visited 16 different cities or towns called Springfield.

Avi Zollman of Washington, D.C., Shoshanah Schein of Philadelphia and Sarah Hendel of Greenwich, Conn., are spreading awareness of neuroblastoma.

About 600 children a year are diagnosed with the disease. Many of them die because, with so few affected, the disease doesn't get much attention from researchers and pharmaceutical companies.

To try to raise awareness, the three will stand in the center of each town with a banner for 600 seconds, representing the 600 children, encouraging people to donate money to the cause through their Web site, http://www.16springfields.com/.

The journey was not initially planned around awareness of neuroblastoma.

After attending the funeral of a close friend's father, Hendel spoke on the subway with a man who also had attended the funeral. They talked about a trip to different Springfields across the country.

The man, Robert Berman, suggested that Hendel have a cause for her trip, and he shared the story of his nephew, Zev Wolff.

Zev, 6, suffers from neuroblastoma and has been through chemotherapy treatments for three years.

Constant chemotherapy is not a long-term cure, however, Berman said. "A cure has to be found."

Hendel, Schein, and Zollman became activists for the cause overnight, said Berman. Through their travels, they hope to gather donations — $10 a person — to help find a cure for neuroblastoma.

Said Hendel: "It's really great. It makes the vacation much more meaningful."

So why start in Nebraska?

Hendel said the travelers determined that starting with Springfield, Neb., allowed them to visit more Springfields in nine days. They flew into Eppley Airfield on Christmas Day and rented a car.

The other Springfields that will be part of the trip are in South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire.

Springfield, MO? Yeah... we'd've liked to go, but it would've added at least an extra day -- and besides, 17 Springfields doesn't roll of the tongue as easily. Thanks for noticing our trip!
