Journal News

In a struggle that illustrates the fierce competition for patients and health-care dollars, White Plains Hospital Center has blocked the head of a Greenwich, Conn., hospital from seeking a seat on the board of directors of the Business Council of Westchester.

Jon B. Schandler, the president and chief executive of the White Plains hospital, had notified the business council in a Dec. 16 letter that his hospital was resigning from the council in protest of the "election of the CEO of Greenwich Hospital to your board of (directors)."...

.....About 600 of Greenwich Hospital's 2,000 employees live in Westchester and 120 of the 540 doctors who are on staff have offices in Westchester, he said.

Two Westchester County hospitals, St. Agnes in White Plains and United Hospital in Port Chester, have closed in recent years, presenting opportunities for other health-care centers.

Pawlush emphasized Greenwich Hospital's commitment to serving Westchester, noting that the hospital is involved in a number of community organizations in the county and has administrative functions at 900 King St. in Rye Brook.

"It's not like we're on the outside looking in," he said. "We're very much a part of the Westchester community."

He said Corvino withdrew from consideration for a board seat because he was asked to do so by the council.

"He didn't want to draw any undue attention to the business council," Pawlush said.

Gordon said she considers the matter closed. Asked whether Corvino's name was dropped from consideration at the council's request, she said: "I think there was a discussion and Frank was extremely gracious about having his name rescinded."

She said his candidacy was first proposed by the council's nominating committee.

The 34 directors listed on the council's Web site include several from companies that are based outside of Westchester but that have operations in the county.

Gordon said directors serve one-year or three-year terms.

Melissa Weisstuch, a spokeswoman for White Plains Hospital Center, confirmed that her hospital's membership in the business council was reinstated. She said Schandler was not in his office and she was unable to reach him, and she could not comment further.
