A rash of Injuries and a pair of early-season losses have made this one of the toughest seasons in recent memory for the Greenwich High School football team. Yet for all the adversity, the Cardinals have never let it affect their practice routine. They show up every Monday, ready to put in a full week's worth of hard work.
Maybe its too late for another title run, but at least the two-time defending FCIAC and CIAC Class LL champions aren't going down without a serious fight.
MORE GREENWICH TIME SPORTS STORIES:
The Greenwich High School girls swim team will have a big lead heading into Tuesday's Class LL championship thanks to a spectacular showing by its divers Friday.
The Cardinals placed four divers in the top six of the 1-meter finals - including junior Kara Caposella, who won the class championship with a score of 402.80.
Junior Annabel Enquist was fourth (331.25), followed by Catie Mahoney in fifth (323.85) and Chloe Russack in sixth (314.10).......

For Greenwich High School field hockey coach Ally Orrico the emphasis has always been on team, not the individual.
That philosophy was especially true Friday as the Cardinals defeated Ridgefield 2-0 in the CIAC Class L quarterfinals.
With the win, Greenwich advances to the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference semifinals Tuesday or Wednesday against No. 2 Simsbury, a 3-0 winner over No. 7 Hall.
"This team is truly a team," Orrico said. "They worked really hard today with their communication and ball control and that's what they did.".....

Sounds of laughter and loud applause emanated from the Brunswick School football team's locker room Friday evening and it wasn't because the Bruins recorded a big victory.
Friday marked the final practice of the season, meaning it was also 'speech day' for Brunswick's 16 seniors. A celebratory mood filled the air as the seniors shared their memorable moments with their teammates and coaches.
"It's awesome, it's a great tradition we have," Brunswick coach Sean Brennan said. "Each of the seniors get a chance to reflect on their time here and just to get a chance to be able to hear what each of their experience has been made for really poignant moments."
Today's 2:30 p.m. season finale against defending New England Class A champion Trinity-Pawling also signals the end of an era of sorts for the Bruins......

Since suffering a rare loss to neighborhood rival Convent of the Sacred Heart on Oct. 18, the Greenwich Academy field hockey team has waited patiently for an opportunity to return the favor.
That chance came Thursday afternoon at a familiar venue for the Gators - the Fairchester Athletic Association Tournament final. Though the regular season matchup had a surprise ending the last time the familiar foes met, Thursday's championship game followed the same script.
Not about to let its reign of supremacy in the league end, second-seeded Greenwich Academy used a two-goal second half to register an impressive 3-1 victory over top-seeded host Sacred Heart in the much-anticipated FAA championship. The triumph before several hundred people.....

Regardless of Friday night's outcome against Stamford, the Greenwich High School football team will be a winner on Saturday morning.
That's when the Cardinals are scheduled to meet a member of a covert special operations unit they're sponsoring through the Americans Support Americans program. Players, cheerleaders and coaches will present the soldier with a care package that will eventually find its way to the troops at their secret location.
As nice a gesture as it may be, there's no doubt breakfast will go down that much better if Greenwich (5-3) can get a victory against Stamford (4-4). The schools resume their border rivalry Friday at 7 p.m. on Senior Night at Cardinal Stadium.
It will be the last home game under the lights this season for Greenwich, which kept its slim playoff hopes alive last week with a 12-0 win against Wilton.
"We're still playing for something," GHS head coach Rich Albonizio said. "It's a little tough when destiny is not in your own hands, but we put ourselves in this situation. We know we've got three games left, and we're looking to finish up strong."
