Greenwich Time - Stamford hedge fund swindler in custody

By Larry Neumeister/Associated Press

Fugitive hedge-fund swindler Samuel Israel turned himself in to federal authorities in Massachusetts this morning after nearly a month on the lam.

Israel disappeared June 9 on the day he was supposed to report to prison. His car was found on a bridge over the Hudson River with the words "Suicide is Painless" - the theme song for the "MASH" television show - scrawled in dust on the hood..

The 48-year-old Israel, a co-founder and chief executive of the now-collapsed Bayou hedge funds, was sentenced in April to 20 years in federal prison for conspiracy and fraud. He was also ordered to pay $300 million to his victims..

Prosecutors said he and two other men persuaded investors to put $450 million into the Stamford, Conn.-based company by announcing nonexistent profits and providing fake audits...

Authorities too trusting with man who fled
06/28/2008

To the editor:

Although I do not claim to know the legal system, I find it amazing that a man convicted of securities fraud and given a 20-year prison term can drive himself to prison.

Is it a way for the federal prison system to save on gasoline or security guards?

I personally find it ridiculous that this convicted prisoner, Samuel Israel, who stole millions of dollars, was thought to be honest enough to drive himself to prison. Now thousands of dollars will be spent and hours of manpower wasted trying to find out where he went (news story, June 17).
