Boys & Girls Clubs of Greenwich Kicks-Off Buddy Up Bike Ride Fundraising Effort to Promote Fitness & Nutrition Awareness on April 13th
BGCG Executive Director to Cycle 3,000 Miles
Cross-Country to Generate New Donor Support
GREENWICH, CT--April 8, 2010- The Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich will launch its Buddy Up Bike Ride fundraising program on April 13th to promote fitness and nutrition awareness among Club members. The two-part program will officially kick-off on April 13th, when approximately 100 Club members ages 6-18 will ride stationary bikes for a combined 3000 miles at the club’s headquarters. The goal of the program is to engage 100+ children, staff and volunteers to ride the route in commemoration of the Club’s 100th anniversary. On May 29th, BGCG Executive Director Bob DeAngelo, will embark on a 3,000 mile cross-country trek beginning in Concord, California and ending his 30-day journey at the BGCG in Greenwich on July 2nd.
The Buddy Up Bike Ride is an initiative conducted in conjunction with the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich, Make-A-Wish Foundation Connecticut and ARC George Miller Center. The program is designed to raise money for three charities and elevate awareness of the benefits of daily exercise and nutrition among Club members. Make-A-Wish Foundation Northeast vice president Michael K. “The aim of the Buddy Up Bike Ride program is to build a team of supporters and riders that will share the sense of adventure and feel the pride of encouraging children to grow beyond their exercise and fitness comfort zones,” said Bob DeAngelo, Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich. “The BGCG will partner with Greenwich community volunteers and donors for the bike ride initiative as the program’s goals are far reaching, and affect the whole child, beyond their time spent at the Club,” added DeAngelo.
“As a donor and volunteer, I am pleased to partner with the Boys and Girls Club of Greenwich to assist with its fitness and fundraising efforts,” said David Platter. “Fostering fitness early on in children’s lives is a key step to long-term health for all BGCG Club members,” added Platter.
The BGCG’s Executive Director’s 3,000 mile bike route will incorporate passage through numerous cities including San Francisco and Pueblo, Colorado via the Western Express bike route. From there, DeAngelo will travel the Bikecentennial route which will take him east toward the Kentucky border followed by the Underground Railroad route. At that point, DeAngelo will head northeast toward Pennsylvania and then north to Route 6’s Grand Old Highway, into Port Jervis, near the Delaware River. The last leg of the trip will lead DeAngelo into the Hudson Valley region in New York, and subsequently towards Greenwich, Connecticut on July 2nd.
Greenwich-based volunteers are actively being sought to ‘buddy-up’ with Club members for the April 13th official kick-off event at the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich. Club members began the BGCG-based stationary bike riding portion of the program a month ago. Proceeds from the fundraising event will benefit the following Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich initiatives and programs: versatile character development, academic support, athletics and recreation.
