Is Greenwich, Connecticut Too Big To Fail?

Okay so it’s nine days old, but you must read this very delightful article about the effects of the financial crisis on Greenwich, Connecticut, a town where rich people live. There had been three types of people in Greenwich, organized into a clear heirarchy: rich hedge fund managers, rich investment bankers, and lastly, filthy serfs. Then! Wall Street crashed! And the new arrangement is thus: rich hedge fund managers, slightly less rich ex-investment bankers, and even filthier serfs. This is a disaster of world-historical magnitude and Hank Paulson needs to buy Greeenwich’s “middle class” new Ferraris to avoid SYSTEMIC GLOBAL FINANCIAL DEFAULT FAILURE.

Paulson understands the risk inherent in letting more rich investment bankers lose 30% of their wealth and succumb to that bleak nadir of “comfortable early retirement.” Because if Greenwich fails, THEN ALL OF CONNECTICUT WILL FAIL:

As the good times rolled in recent years, the state budget became increasingly dependent on Greenwich. Despite having only about 60,000 people, the town contributed nearly $600 million in state income taxes in 2006 — more than three times the income taxes paid by the combined populations of Hartford, Bridgeport, New Haven and Waterbury. With only 1.8 percent of tax filers, Greenwich provides nearly 13 percent of all state income tax, helping to pay for schools in West Hartford and road repairs in Rockville, not to mention every other cost related to running the state.

Connecticut! Gone! Can America survive a reabsorption of this heathen separatist state back into Massachusetts Bay Colony??? If we’re lucky, JP Morgan Chase will just buy it, as it has every other crappy thing ever. JP Morgan Chase puts country above self.

Then we come to famous rich Greenwich person Ned Lamont, the Senate loser who has recently been spotted bumming around for change in Denver parking lots. Ned explains how Wall Street can affect Main Street, in Greenwich:

“The roofer and the plumber and the construction guys — a lot of their year is correlated to financial bonuses,” said Lamont, who has lived in Greenwich for 20 years. “It’s going to immediately affect the lives of some people here more than other places around the state.”

It’s like the history of the American South. When cotton was booming after the invention of the cotton gin around 1800, plantation owners made lots of cash and slaves had lots of work they could do. Slavemasters called this “trickle-down economics.” And then when Ted Kennedy and the liberals made slavery illegal, the slavemasters made no money and the lazy slaves had no way to fill up their time.

As Ned Lamont actually says about Greenwich in the financial crisis, “This is our Katrina.”

MYSTERY GREENWICH HIT AND RUN DRIVER ARRESTED FOR DUI

A 17-year-old Greenwich girl was arrested Sept. 29 and charged with driving under the influence. While responding to an unrelated incident police saw car on the grassy shoulder of Pemberwick Road and West Putnam Avenue against a telephone pole with what was described as moderate front end damage. The girl, who had been driving, allegedly was unsteady on her feet as she exited the vehicle and smelled of alcohol while displaying slurred speech and red, glassy eyes. As police were conducting field sobriety tests on the girl, they were notified by patrol that the vehicle had hit a parked car on Pemberwick Road and fled the scene before striking the telephone pole. The girl was released into the custody of her father on a $250 cash bond. She is due in court Oct. 8.

I have recently wondered if Joe Pisani was simply an opportunist or a good guy. Again, it seems like I have more questions than answers.

This gossip/student/mentor thing? I wondered about this after reading her "fair well to a friend" column after The Greenwich Time told JP to take a hike. It wasn't your "typical" coworker, "hey I'll miss you, good luck" type of "writing". It was complete immature beyond basic sentimental teenage style DRAMA. I thought immediately there was something off mark.

It went something like: "I met Joe Pisani while I was working at a Yachting magazine." ( Now she turns out to be a former high school student) Then there was "I will always feel an emptiness in my life or heart" or something along the lines of a broken heart. Boo hoo. "We spent hours talking about love, happiness and life" Sure, my wife would encourage me to have more conversations like that with someone ELSE. Please. Enough said there. And it ended "he will always be mine." Oh sure, and why not also be my Valentine? C'mon baby.

Oh yeah, I don't care what these people do in their spare time. I don't care what people do unless it's shoved in the faces of hundreds

Here's a guy who pretends he is the "Second Coming of J.C ," ranting and raving about how corrupt the Catholic Church is. Meanwhile, his life behind the scenes, mimics a Monica and Bill reenactment?

Its a pity what lust does to people. I take that quote directly from THE MAN, Joe Pisani.

I'm sorry I ever subscribed to The Greenwich Time for so long and please don't mail that Kitty Litter Liner the Greenwich Post to my home anymore.

Never mind, I'm already sorry. I thought he was gone, along with his unethical unprofessional unbelievable behavior and overinflated ego. I always wondered how his head fit through the doors of St. John the Evangelist as a DAILY Communicant. The only reason I know he went to Mass daily was he was always telling people he did. Enough said.

Jesus commanded, in Matthew 18, that conflict resolution among church members begin with the aggrieved party attempting to resolve their dispute with the offending party alone.

Only if this did not work would the process escalate to the next step, in which other church members would become involved. In no case did Jesus authorize complaining to another church member without having confronted the offender first.

Wild turkey removed from Greenwich Point

After a long summer strolling the beach at Greenwich Point, the wild turkey named Henrietta was captured and re-released into the wild by the Department of Environmental Protection Monday, officials said.

The bird was apprehended around 10:20 a.m. without being harmed and moved to a state forest , according to Howard Kilpatrick, a wildlife biologist with the Department of Environmental Protection's Wildlife Division.

"The turnout was good for her," said Greenwich Animal Control Officer Suzanne Carlin. "It was a wise decision so she could go back to a normal way of life." ....

...Ed Fesco, property foreman at Greenwich Point, said a woman was pecked and scratched by the bird recently.

"It scratched her arm and then flew up and pecked her head," said Fesco. Mike Henry, utility worker and caretaker of the property for 25 years, said his friend's girlfriend was also pecked on the leg by the bird, causing her to have minor bleeding. Animal Control was called on both occasions, according to the men. ....

....However, Theresa Stanton, who said she had a frightening encounter with what she deemed an aggressive bird, said the result Monday was positive for everyone involved.
"It was probably the best thing for the humans and the bird," said Stanton.
For months, employees at Greenwich Point said they witnessed Henrietta stroll in and out of the beach each day.

"In the morning when I open the gate, I see her coming back in, and at night she leaves," Henry said last week, before Henrietta had been removed. Fesco said the bird used to travel with four other turkeys, but during the spring started wandering alone.

Brian O'Toole, of Audubon Greenwich, said wild turkeys are a common presence in the Greenwich area and have been growing quickly in population over the last decade. In 1992, when Audubon started recording their presence, there were nine wild turkeys. In 2004, they hit a record high of 115, and this year there are 69 turkeys, O'Toole said, noting that the statistics are from Greenwich, Stamford, Darien and parts of Westchester County.

What was not common however, is how Henrietta was behaving, according to O'Toole.
"It's unusual for them to approach people," he said. "I've never heard of any incident like this," O'Toole said last week. "It's a very rare case."

Obituaries:

JOHN HARRISON age 81, died on September 28, 2008. Born March 19, 1927, he was the son of the late Wilfred and Ann Harrison. John grew up in Crestwood, N.Y. and graduated from Peekskill Military Academy and Drew University. He served in the Korean War as an officer in the United States Navy. In 1955, he began a long and distinguished career in food brokerage serving the metropolitan area of New York. Eventually, John Harrison & Co. located to his home town of Greenwich, Connecticut. Known for his integrity, sound convictions and common sense, John was a rock for his family and well respected in his community. John has been an active member of First Church of Round Hill for more than 40 years. He was a member of the Stanwich Club. A passionate outdoor sportsman, naturalist and motorhomer, John experienced his beloved United States like few others. John is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marianne Host Harrison, his son, Jay Kenderdine Harrison and his wife Emma, of Balsham, England, his son, Tyler Host Harrison and his wife Kathryn, of Atlanta, Georgia, and his five grandchildren: Torkil, Oliver, Lillie, Jack and Bennett. Memorial services will be held at the First Church of Round Hill at 2:00 on Saturday, October 4th. Fred D. Knapp & Son Funeral Home of Greenwich is in charge of arrangements.

MARY MADDEN BEGLEY age 87, died at her home after a brief illness, on Saturday, September 27. She was a 56-year resident of Greenwich and later Palm Beach. She was the beloved mother of Monie Begley Feurey of New York City, John Begley of Shelton, CT., Claire Perry of Bishop, CA., and Bill Begley of Dallas, TX. And the beloved sister of Florence Madden Clark of Glenview, IL and Palm Beach. She is also survived by her devoted grandchildren, all of whom she adored: Dori Begley, Ian Begley, Caitlin Feurey, Brendan Feurey, Jonathan Begley, Victoria Begley, Stephen Ricks, William Ricks. And daughters-in-law, Susan Begley and Bridgette Begley. She was born in Chicago to George and Loretta Madden. She was predeceased by her former husband, John Begley. She was, until recently, a member of The Everglades Club, Indian Harbor Yacht Club, and The Stanwich Club. She was an avid golfer, tennis player, bridge player and fierce competitor. Her passions were her family, her friends in many generations, and all the parties, which were legendary! She was one of the founding board members of the first Montessori school in the United States, The Whitby School in Greenwich. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's Church, Greenwich at 11am Saturday, October 4th. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to: The Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care of Southwestern Connecticut, 1029 East Main Street, Stamford, CT. 06902, who were the angels who made her last days more comfortable.

CATHERINE MCAFEE-SCHACHT age 47, passed away suddenly at home in Milford, CT on September 26, 2008. She was born on April 25, 1961 and attended Stamford schools. Catherine is survived by her husband, Hyman Schacht who was the love of her life. She is also survived by her son, Christopher David Schacht & wife Ellen and her new grandson Christopher David Schacht, Jr. Also a daughter, Stacey Schacht and her son Michael. She is also survived by her mother Nancy McAfee of Riverside, CT, her father Charles McAfee and wife Jean of Norwalk. Also four sisters Jacqueline Lewis of West Haven, Maureen Wood & her husband Stan of Milford, Sandra Gasiorowski & her husband John of Shelton, and Barbara Raiente of Riverside, along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, and an Aunt Susan Seaton and two uncles. The New Haven Crematory will be handling arrangements. There are no calling hours. There will be a memorial mass at a later date at St. Catherine's in Riverside.

The following are Sept. 29’s released arrests:

MYSTERY GREENWICH DRUG DEALER ARRESTED FOR POSSESSION

A 17-year-old Greenwich boy was arrested Sept. 25 and charged with intent to sell a controlled substance, possession of marijuana under four ounces, possession of drug paraphernalia and having weapons in a motor vehicle. The police department’s narcotics division had been investigating numerous complaints about the boy selling marijuana since February. According to police reports, the boy had been placed under surveillance and officers saw him get into a car and drive to Port Chester, N.Y. where narcotics are known to be sold. Police said he gave someone something and took something back in return. Police believed this was a drug transaction and pulled the boy’s car over. Officers said they found 7.2 grams of marijuana in the car in small plastic bags, a smoking pipe and a drug grinder with residue in it. Police also reported finding a throwing knife and a lock blade knife in the open position in the vehicle’s center console. The boy was released on a $1,000 cash bond into the custody of his father and is due in court Oct. 8.

MISCHIEF

Police arrested three teenage boys, one 17-year-old and two 16-year-olds, Sept. 27 and charged them with third degree criminal mischief and conspiracy to commit third degree criminal mischief. Police believe the three damaged a mailbox on Fairview Terrace. They were released on promises to appear in court Oct. 8 and were released into the custody of their parents.

DISORDERLY

A 16-year-old Greenwich boy was arrested Sept. 27 and charged with disorderly conduct. Police had received a report of a boyfriend and girlfriend fighting. Police said the boy allegedly put his hand on her neck. He was released on a $1,000 surety bond and was due in court Sept. 29.

DUI

Bogumil Mosiej, 26, of 6 Bedford Road was arrested Sept. 28 and charged with driving under the influence. Police had been sent to Barcelona Restaurant on West Putnam Avenue on the report of a disorderly group there. Mosiej was one of the ones at the scene and police reportedly saw him get into his car and try to leave. In an attempt to interview him, police pulled the vehicle over, after he first reportedly tried to drive away after the flashing lights were activated, and alleged that Mosiej had red, glassy eyes and smelled of alcohol. He then reportedly failed field sobriety tests. He was arrested and additionally charged with failure to obey an officer’s signal. Mosiej was released on a $500 cash bond and is due in court Oct. 13.

Here we go.....

On the Darien Times: I have read my share of brown nose editorials and columns. Joe Pisani's newest column about the owner of Hersham Acorn, highlighting Joe and his Dicken's like "stroll through the streets of New Canaan" tops the list of those which caused my gag reflex to activate. But I wasn't surprised.

I did wonder, however, why he would credit another LIVING journalist, based on Joe's self-imposed literary entitlement. Joe has always likened himself among the greatest" like Thoreau, Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Frost, Homor, Tolstoy, and Emerson. Of course, the pedestal is large enough to hold so much talent....and my guess is any one of those notable writers, if LIVING, would be chopping at the bit to push little Joe.....off.

Truth be known, as Joe's idyllic imagination kicks in, fantasizing of wading in the real Walden Pond, these great writers must be turning over in their graves. "Chilblains" ???? Joe admits he needed a dictionary for that? Even I, in my daily struggle for the "right" words, didn't need a dictionary for that word. I have to think, if Mr. Yudain's prose is so eloquent,and he is so despondent over the moral deprivation of society.....why is he allowing such contrariety? AKA, "Did I say that" and "The Dish, too" AKA used-to-be-Advocateees????

That's just plain insane. And dumb.

But Joe's writing reminds me of my own writing when I was just a wee-freshman english major. I can't say I always needed a dictionary. If I can't think of the right word, I'll make one up. My weakness was hyper-referencing the thesaurus. The tool I needed to impress my English teacher, or so I thought. I don't like to admit it, but I was so wrapped up in finding a literary persona and getting noticed, I often mixed up adjectives and adverbs, threw in a noun when it wasn't necessary, and my papers often came back with the proverbial "C+". I have since learned to writer without the slightest hint of stealing from the grandiose styles of anyone. If anything, I just want to make sure my style is not Pisani-istic (complete, self-inflated, faux- intellectual, CRAP). I am what I am....like it or not.....my writing is mine. I don't live in a fantasy land. I'm married, faithful, and I sometimes sneak a peek, while my wife is looking LOL at my immature antics.

But, for whatever reason, the focus last week was on Joe's inept writing,his obsession with a gossip columnist, and the need to stay PUBLIC and VISIBLE deep in the throats of Greenwich. My question is WHY? If you want to donate your time, why not work the Stamford Soup Kitchen? I remember once Joe Pisani had the nerve to show up and work a Fairfield County charitable event....as if he were a daily volunteer. Did he ever handle a soup ladle? Did he ever get spit on by an emotionally challenged homeless man? No way. He was a "celebrity guest". And we were all trying to find a way to break the news gently to Joe. That he was far from celebrity status, and his presence was just plain, IN YOUR FACE, annoying.

So, just like in Poltergeist, "he'ssssssssss backkkkkkkk". Why? Who invited him? Today, I have my eye on the stock market, not eagles. I'm thinking about the election, not the latest dish from Joe's personal assistant or adopted daughter. Far be it from me to add fuel to these "relationship" speculations, which is all over Greenwich, slowly seeping north like raw sewage.

I would like to point out when I was younger, I read Joe's editorials, and thought I'd better hurry to Confession. Or, is human nature something we all struggle with, the only exception being Mr. Pisani? Or I'd better apologize to so and so, or gosh "is Joe an example of what a perfect man SHOULD BE?" I have since grown up. Slightly. If he wants to throw rocks at houses, he better not have any windows in his own house. Because people are starting their wind-up....

Almost forgot: I have a friend who has a 18 yr. old beautiful daughter who is on the verge of failing senior high school English. Does anyone have Joe Pisani's number?

First it was Bear Stearns, then Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Then came Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch and American International Group Inc.

It's unclear how the latest meltdowns on Wall Street will afflict the local economy in the long term, but two significant impacts stemming from these latest major financial crises - employment and tax revenue - are already shaking Greenwich and the entire region.

"Thousands of jobs in New York have been lost and the impacts of that will obviously be felt in Fairfield County and Connecticut," said Lisa Mercurio, director, Fairfield County Information Exchange at the Business Council of Fairfield County.

"This is a major financial crisis, with impacts on employment and on the ability to buy things such as real estate, retail, etc. As companies are bought and merged into others, there will be redundancies and jobs losses." .....

....Mary Ann Morrison, president and CEO of the Greenwich Chamber of Commerce, said that although Greenwich businesses have already been hit by the weakened economy, it's too premature to predict how the latest financial breakdowns will impact the town in the long term.

"I see Greenwich businesses being very prudent, very cautious and very observant for what has happened through all of this year," Morrison said. "They are seeing fewer people come through the door, the cash register not ringing as much and maybe not as many zeros behind the sale." Morrison added, "Most business owners see this as a dip in the economy; some places have closed the doors, but there were lot of factors involved, not just one." ....

... U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays, R-4, senior member of the Financial Services Committee, earlier this week called for executive compensation limits for companies that will be assisted by the Department of Treasury proposal, which is requesting from Congress the authority to purchase troubled assets from financial institutions in order to promote market stability, and help protect American families and the U.S. economy.

"There needs to be accountability for the investment managers and executives who made poor management decisions," Shays said. "Preventing golden parachutes and limiting executive compensation packages at firms that choose to participate seems like a good place to start. This package is about protecting taxpayers' retirement funds, pension plans, college savings and other investments by ensuring continued liquidity in the marketplace, not about bailouts for the people who got us into this mess." ....

...."There will be a significant need to retrain and upgrade their skills," he said. "This has widened from merely a subprime mortgage crisis to a broad, systemic credit crisis."

Although the breakdown of Wall Street has spawned an onset of panic in the region, Morrison said the next few months will dictate how the local economy will be directly affected.

"I think this has got to play out a little bit more. The Christmas holiday sales will be a key indicator in how bonuses will impact shopping. By year-end, the state of Connecticut could be impacted gravely."
