Greenwich residents feel sting of higher costs, slow economy

By Martin B. Cassidy
Staff Writer

GREENWICH - In recent months, Timothy Cerniglia has noticed the cost of the groceries he buys every two weeks at Stop & Shop has jumped from $75 to more than $100.

The 86-year-old Greenwich resident compensates by buying less costly store brands of some foods.

"It goes up every time," Cerniglia said. "It has to do with the oil prices and this mess we have in the Middle East."..

05/10/08 - Government Compliant Media Operations In Greenwich

Regurgitated Town Of Greenwich And Board Of Education Press releases! Must Die! Die! Die! At The Greenwich Time

Nothing Has thwarted the Town Of Greenwich from using coercion and favoritism to manipulate a compliant press in Greenwich.

The Stakeholders Of Greenwich want a daily or at least weekly newspaper devoted to the unbiased reporting of events and developments that are significant to readers living in, or employed in Greenwich.
  • The Single Family Home Owners Of Greenwich School Children want a daily or at least weekly newspaper that will strive to report fairly, and objectively reliable information without favor or compromise.
  • The Parents Of Greenwich School Children want a daily or at least weekly newspaper whose first duty will be the PEOPLES RIGHT TO KNOW.
  • The Parents of Glenville and Hamilton Avenue School need a daily or at least weekly newspaper that expose the truth, without fear or hesitation, no matter where the pursuit may lead.
All Of Greenwich deserves a daily or at least weekly newspaper that will conduct itself in the finest tradition of FREEDOM OF THE PRESS.

The Greenwich time has repeatedly failed to cover news and events relevant to the health and safety of innocent small children, instead they focussed on immediacy of reproducing press releases in a journal format.

Audit Bureau Statistics show that the Greenwich Time year after year loses readers, because they fail to provide a comprehensive, chronological step-by step accounting of events, enlightened with analysis where appropriate.

From amongst the journalism's classic Key Words: who, what, when, where, why and how, the Greenwich Time often fails to deliver the "why and how".

The Greenwich Time does not use it's abundant time and resources to get past the initial government or school board "spin" and "damage control" which are often at the core of press releases.

The Greenwich Time repeatedly fails to reach the very heart of the matter: THE TRUTH.

The Greenwich Time often ignores the cries of the single family home owners and parents and other disenfranchised members of Greenwich society.

Greenwich Time readers are fleeing to the web, because this local kitty litter liner is unable or unwilling to take it's readers to level of understanding and insight that they want.

If the Greenwich news paper publishers can't deliver a product that carefully balances the presentation of relevant of, hard hitting news and commentary without bias then there is an army of fit and trim citizen journalists that will succeed in filling the needs of Greenwich residents and eventually advertisers.

There are blogs less than a year old that reach 10 to 15 percent of the same households that the Greenwich Time reaches.

These blogs that are focusing on the who and why are growing exponentially, while the Greenwich Time is in a downward spiral, as it reproduces Government and Board Of Education press releases.

05/09/09 - Hey Greenwich Time - Glenville School Parents Want To Know - WHY??????

Why Is The Yellowich Time
Afraid To Look Into These Facts?

Are The Small Children Of Glenville School Really Safe In Those Contaminated Classrooms?

WHY - after the Hamilton Avenue School parents hire an attorney did the Board Of Education / Town of Greenwich finally agree to let the parents' paid Industrial Hygienist access to the contaminated modulars, using the agreement changes the parents originally requested when they didn't have an attorney?

WHY - agreeing to grant said access today at 1:00 p.m. was Bob "I Always Cover My Ass" Brown of Hygenix (formerly head of the Town Of Greenwich Health Department) in the contaminated modulars yesterday for hours?

WHY - after agreeing to grant said access was Sue "Please Don't Fire Me" Wallerstein making an emergency visit to the contaminated modulars at 8:00 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. this morning.

AND:

Why did the head maintenance man,
George "I Am Just Doing What I Am Told" Kordis, show up with a maintenance crew at 10:20???????

It looks like the Greenwich Time Reporters are still sitting on their hands waiting for another Board Of Education Press Release.

Once The Greenwich Time Reporters Get That BOE Press Release They Can Run Through A Spell Checker And Publish It On The Front Page.

05/09/08 - Reader Submitted Comments - GreenwichDiva Says - Vote Yes for the new GHS auditorium

Greenwich, CT, one of the wealthiest places in the world to live, yet, it's ONLY public high school auditorium is rank second to last (Bridgeport is ranked lower) in Fairfield County by the state.

To our RTM (Representative Town Meeting) committees, please consider making the new auditorium a priority. Please take these bullet points very seriously and let's do what is right for our children.

GHS Music Instructional Space and Auditorium Project Bullet Points

  • The choral, band and orchestra rooms are half the size they should be.
  • The auditorium holds 31% of our students compared with 61% in comparable communities. State standard is 50%.
  • In Fairfield County, only Bridgeport facilities are ranked lower than GHS by the state.
  • The project will not start till Glenville is completed, but we need to do the architecture/engineering work and get going. The full A&E monies are necessary to answer the questions about zoning, FAR concerns and to obtain viable drawings and proper plans.
  • Delaying the project is the most expensive action we could take to effect the project.
  • The pipeline of performing students from the elementary schools is growing, more so than the slight drop-off in GHS population (100 fewer students over 10 years.)
  • 100-200 students are annually turned away from music/performance/choral offerings; limited space
  • The project is widely supported through petitions (over 4,000 signed) and other town processes - vetted by First Selectman, CIP committee, BET Budget Committee, BET, and by majority vote of committees of RTM.
  • The tax implications are understood and manageable per the BET, taxes will not rise.
  • The construction amount of $23.4M includes 15% contingency, 6% escalation (it is a 'high' estimate), and project management fees. This means the contract will be structured the same as the downtown public safety complex, not like Hamilton Avenue school.
  • The proposed auditorium is equivalent to other comparable schools, not extravagant, not 'Broadway.'

To my fellow Greenwich residents, please contact your district RTM members http://www.greenwichct.org/RTM/RTM.asp (go to 'search RTM member list', then click on 'click here', click on the map of Greenwich, then click on your district and your RTM members names, phone numbers and addresses will come up) and let them know how important Greenwich High School is to our community.

05/08/08 - Greenwich Public Schools Lied To Parents When They Tried To Blame The Hamilton Avenue Modular Contamination On The Factory

Greenwich Time Reporters Are Too Scared To See, Hear or Say What Happened At The Contaminated Modular Classrooms

Here Is Something That You Won't Read In The Greenwich Time

Navigant Consulting's Presentation to Board of Education entitled
Temporary Classroom at WMS...

Clearly Shows That School Administrators And The Town Of Greenwich Building Department Did Not Make Sure That The Contaminated Modular Met Local Building Codes.

Greenwich Public School's Drawing Of The Contaminated Modular Classrooms Are "Incomplete And Uncoordinated".

Navigant Consulting Clearly States:

"Design errors and omissions were a contributing factor in the development of mold in the building overhangs."

How did the Greenwich Time Miss Navigant Consultings Report?

It looks like the Greenwich Time reporters were too busy waiting for a press release from Susan Wallerstein, Assistant Superintendent for business.

We are sure that Ms. Wallerstein's press release will tell us why the contaminated classrooms did not meet local building codes.

We are also sure that Ms. Wallerstein will clearly explain why her departments drawings of the contaminated modular classrooms are incomplete and uncoordinated.

We are also sure Ms. Wallerstien's press release will truthfully explain how her department's design errors and omissions were a contributing factor in the contamination of the modular classrooms.

Once Ms. Wallerstein's press release arrives at the Greenwich Time, then they will run it through the spell checker and publish it on the front page.

Time and Time Again Greenwich Residents Have Had To Rely On Blogers To Bring Them The News About What Is Going On In And Around Greenwich.

Where is the investigative Reporting?

Where are the Freedom Of Information requests from hard nosed reporters?

Why is the Greenwich press affraid of Betty and the BOE?

How many parents and single family home owners of Greenwich remember this news headline.....

03/12/08 No mold hazard found at Ham Ave. modulars (Greenwich Time)

This story reminds one of a Greenwich Public School Press Release being run through a spell checker before being published on the front page.

Why can't Greenwich newspaper reporters be fearless when confronting the Board Of Education?

Has a Greenwich Time reporter been brave enough to go up to The Greenwich Fire Chief or Greenwich Building Inspector and ask.....

"How did you let children occupy a modular classroom that did not met local building codes?" Has a Greenwich Time reporter been brave enough to file even one Freedom Of information request about the contaminated modular classrooms?

Now you know why Bill Clark at the Greenwich Gossip Blog calls the newspaper the "Yellowich Time"

Newspaper Decides To Shoot The Messenger

Stamford Advocate Website Steps Up Web Media, Bans StationStops.com From Comments (?)

This article is critical of the Stamford Advocate family of websites, and its not my first. However, it is specifically critical, and it is constructive criticism....

...
the story about the Beating and Robbery At Riverside Walgreens still does not have the security cam photos (we have them here).

This last story is especially unfortunate, as the sister of the victim in the case specifically commented on the article on their website, asking why Greenwich Time had not included the pictures.

Previously, I had commented on these stories on the Stamford Advocate website and let their confused readers know that I had the images discussed on my website. However, my comments seem to not be appearing on the Stamford Advocate website anymore :( I don’t know if they have banned me or its simply a fluke...

...From the email response from Stamford Advocate Marketing Services, it would seem that the issue is a workflow problem, where editors submit the text copy and rely on web producers to follow through with media prior to website publication...

...when a large newspaper chain like the Stamford Advocate/Greenwich Time/Norwalk Advocate will not consistently publish photographs of persons wanted by local police on their website, they are really dropping the ball on a longstanding public service in the newspaper community...

...If the Stamford Advocate wants to keep their own photographs limited to print publication, thats fine and entirely their right to do so. However, when they are provided photos by public officials which need to be widely distributed in order to be of any use to the local police, they are failing their community by not publishing them on their website in a consistent and timely manner.

Teardown Controversy

Russian Billionaire Outrages Greenwich With Supermansion
By Cher

There has been some recent controversy about a massive project that involves an $18M teardown on Simmons Lane in Greenwich, CT. I found a link to this interesting article that not only discusses the plans for the 27000 SF estate, ...

... the correct Russian description for “outrageous”, but my limited dictionary here shows me that the word defining “big” is being expressed as большой. Of course Andrei will have to confirm this for me.

This is the house that supposedly has plans for 26 toilets. I suppose that by having 26 toilets, one should be able to flush large amounts of money down them most efficiently.

ABOUT SFTT Foundation

SFTT’s unique educational and advocacy mission is to see that the Pentagon and our elected leaders in Washington get the right equipment, training and leadership for our US troops by giving a public voice to and providing a candid forum for America’s front-line forces. SFTT was founded by Col. David Hackworth and Eilhys England Hackworth to educate our country's citizens on the need to give a voice to our serving sons and daughters and to demand that they receive: Equipment superior to the best an enemy can employ against them; Training that fully prepares them to succeed in all assigned missions; Leadership dedicated to selfless service and the timeless values of duty, honor, and country. Through news breaking reporting from the foundation’s Defense Watch webzine and its INTEL CENTER, which is regularly monitored and sought out by major media, SFTT has been instrumental in shining the bright light of public scrutiny on injustices from anthrax vaccines to Abu Ghraib to substandard body armor. Defense Watch has been the source, credited and not, for recent front page articles and news segments in the New York Times and the Washington Post, 60 Minutes, NBC Nightly News and Dateline, and other national broadcast news programs. ‘Hack’ was a Greenwich resident until the time of his death in May 2005 from bladder cancer from exposure to Agent Blue in Viet Nam. His widow, Eilhys, continues to guide the foundation from the couple’s Greenwich home. The 501(c)3 organization is supported by donations from concerned individuals. More information can be found on the foundation website: www.SFTT.org.
