Police Watch:

POSSESSION

New Rochelle, N.Y., man Jermaine Francis, 24, was arrested March 27 and charged with possession of marijuana under four ounces and possession of drug paraphernalia. Police were sent to the municipal parking lot on Pemberwick Road at Glenville Road on the report of someone possibly trying to steal a car. At the scene, officers reportedly saw Francis in a car with a woman and it was determined the car belonged to his father and he had permission to have it. During the investigation, though, police allegedly saw a clear plastic bag containing marijuana sticking out of the map holder attached to the right front seat back. A check of the vehicle then reportedly found three assorted types of smoking pipes used for narcotics. Francis was released on a $500 cash bond and is due in court April 3.

PROBATION

Jhordan Vasquez, 18, of 330 Delevan Ave. was arrested March 27 and charged with violation of probation. Police had received orders from the state probation office to arrest him and did so when he turned himself in on the warrant. Vasquez was released on a $1,000 surety bond and is due in court April 4.

ASSAULT

A 32-year-old Port Chester man was arrested March 27 and charged with third degree assault. He reportedly turned himself in on a warrant that stemmed from a domestic violence incident that occurred at a local address on Dec. 4. The man was released on a $250 cash bond and is due in court April 4.

It's Time To Once Again To Beat The Press:

Superintendent Betty Sternberg spins it. Communications Director Kim Eves delivers it and of coarse, the Greenwich Citizen runs it through the spell checker before publishing it.

Objective Reporting Paragraph Of The Day:

This Is Complacent Reporting At It's Worse:

And there is not one word in the story about unnecessary and high expenses that were caused by Betty "You Can Trust Me" Sternberg's incompetent screw ups.

Nothing about how failed school administrators increased the single family home owners tax bill by KNOWINGLY allowing the contaminated modular classrooms to fester for over one year.

Nothing about the tax ramifications of the unnecessary diaspora of 400 small school children.

It looks like the Greenwich Citizen is totally unaware of the tax consequences of the Hamilton Avenue School cover up has on this record-breaking $371 million budget.

Talking to children about important issues such as global warming and natural resource protection may seem daunting. Fortunately, William the green garbage truck is here to help. ...While a couple of speakers broached the topic of Glenville School's fate given plans to move the students to a temporary home this fall and begin reconstructing the 1970 school, the subject at the top of most parents' minds last night was Hamilton Avenue School.

Many of those parents had attended a special meeting the Board of Education held Wednesday night specifically to address their concerns, and last night they were back with more questions and criticism.

Many said they were suspicious that school officials weren't telling them everything about the health risks their children faced from the mold that forced the school to be evacuated several weeks ago....

There are a lot of emails about no school books and supplies for Hamilton Avenue Children.

I am trying to keep up with all the news tips, but unfortunately I am blind in one eye and the left eye is crossed, which makes it difficult to hunt and peck on the key board with one finger.

Often I have to greatly magnify the type on the Greenwich Library computers in order to read materials, often this leads to the Wildly excited or active and frantic or frenzied type on this blog.

New England has a long and storied history of publishing anonymously

For example there are revolutionary heroes such as Ben Franklin who at 12 he became an apprentice to his brother James, a printer. When Ben was 15, James created the New England Courant, the first truly independent newspaper in the colonies.

When denied the option to write to the paper, Franklin invented the pseudonym of Mrs. Silence Dogood, who was ostensibly a middle-aged widow. The letters were published in the paper and became a subject of conversation around town. Neither James nor the Courant's readers were aware of the ruse, and James was unhappy with Ben when he discovered the popular correspondent was his younger brother.

Another example is Thomas Paine who was an English pamphleteer, revolutionary, radical, classical liberal and intellectual. He lived and worked in Britain until the age of 37, when he migrated to the American colonies just in time to take part in the American Revolution. His main contribution was as the author of the powerful, widely read pamphlet, Common Sense (1776), advocating independence for the American Colonies from the Kingdom of Great Britain, and of The American Crisis, supporting the Revolution.

The Time and its sister paper, The Advocate, were sold to Hearst for US$62.4 million by Tribune Company in a deal that closed November 1, 2007. The sale did not include Tribune-owned land in Stamford and Greenwich, including the papers' printing presses. Eventually, Hearst plans to print both The Advocate and the Time at the Connecticut Post plant in Bridgeport. The Post is owned by MediaNews, which manages The Advocate and the Time for Hearst, taking 60 percent of net income from the papers.^[2]

In March 2007, Tribune Co. had announced it would sell the two papers to Gannett for US$73 million, but the deal fell through when Gannett refused to honor 35 Advocate newsroom workers' union contract with Local 2110 of United Auto Workers.^[2]

The Royal Bank of Scotland has confirmed its Greenwich Capital unit is part of a Securities Exchange Commission probe into the collapse of the subprime mortgage market.

The SEC has opened about three dozen inquiries, including those that involve major investment banks, according to recent published reports.

Greenwich Capital, a top issuer of mortgage-backed securities in the subprime market, is based on Steamboat Road in Greenwich. The unit was asked by the SEC to hand over some of its financial documents, but RBS officials would not comment on the probe beyond that.

"We will fully cooperate with the SEC or any regulators," said Carolyn McAdam, a spokeswoman for RBS global headquarters in the United Kingdom.

Police Watch:

POSSESSION

Loren Antonia Ferraro, 23, of Stamford was arrested March 24 after attempting to steal a store safe from Sundaze Tanning at 280 Railroad Ave. She was charged with interfering with a police officer, possession of crack cocaine and third degree larceny. Store employees told police that Ferraro, a patron of the business, attempted to steal the safe and a nail gun set. Ferraro left the scene and later returned to find police there. The nail gun set and safe were found in a back storage room. Police reported Ferraro “violently resisted” officers as she was being handcuffed. A search of her car produced a rock lodged between the backrest and seat portion of the driver’s seat. It later tested positive for the presence of cocaine. Ferraro was released on a $1,000 surety bond and is due in court March 31.
