National Expert on Hearing Loss to Speak at Greenwich High School

Jane Madell to Present Two Seminars on September 28 to Professionals and Parents:
“Managing Hearing Loss in the Classroom” and “Succeeding with Hearing Loss”
Greenwich, CT – September 20, 2011 -- The Connecticut Chapter of the Alexander
Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Greenwich Public
Schools today announced they will co-sponsor a presentation by nationally renowned
expert on hearing loss Dr. Jane Madell at Greenwich High School on September 28.
"If there ever was a good time to have hearing loss, this is it,” said Jane Madell, PhD.
“With today's sophisticated hearing technology and auditory learning therapies,
children with hearing loss can learn language and academic material through their ears --
like their typically hearing peers.”

Madell’s presentation begins at 3:30pm and consists of two seminars targeted to both
professionals and parents. In her first entitled “Managing Hearing Loss in the Classroom:
Best Practices,” Madell will discuss the team approach to supporting children with
hearing loss, the importance of technology to provide auditory access to instruction,
classroom acoustics and learning through audition.

Starting at 6:30pm, Madell will present “Succeeding with Hearing Loss: What We Need
to Know.” In this seminar, she will discuss the critical role of parents as team members
and advocates, provide strategies for evaluating the child’s amplification equipment, and
explain ways to monitor progress in therapy and in the classroom.

Madell is a certified audiologist, speech-language pathologist, Listening and Spoken
Language Specialist (LSLS), and auditory verbal therapist. She was formerly Director of
the Hearing and Learning Center and Co-Director of the Cochlear Implant Center at the
Ear Institute at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and Beth Israel Medical Center.

Madell’s clinical and research interests are in the area of evaluation of hearing in infants
and young children, management of hearing loss in children with severe and profound
hearing loss, selection and management of amplification including hearing aids, cochlear
implants and FM systems, assessment of auditory function and the management of
auditory processing disorders. She has written four books, as well as many chapters and
journal articles and is a frequent presenter at parent and professional meetings.

“We are thrilled to have this opportunity to collaborate with Greenwich Public Schools to
sponsor this seminar by Jane Madell, one of the most highly respected names in the field
of hearing loss,” said Susan Cotton Bernstein, President, AG Bell Connecticut Chapter.
“The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is committed
to supporting families who have with children with hearing loss. Chapters across the
country sponsor a variety of educational opportunities and social events for professionals
and parents. The Madell seminar is our third educational event this school year and our
first one in southern Connecticut.”

“Greenwich Public Schools is looking forward to hosting Jane Madell, who has made
significant contributions in the field of pediatric audiology and the development of
listening and spoken language in children with hearing loss,” said Meagan Downey,
Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing for Greenwich Public Schools. “The Madell
presentation will bring together educators and parents from Greenwich and nearby school
