CROWMELL — A unique remembrance ceremony, timed to the moment the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center, will be held Sunday morning at the Willowbrook Plaza.

Twenty-five specially made US flags will be flown during the ceremony, which was arranged by Jay Polke, the owner of the Willowbrook Spirit Shoppe.

“The flags of honor were created by my cousin, John Michelotti, an artist from Greenwich (CT),” Polke explained.

“They contain the names of all the people (who) died that day from the terrorist attacks on the trade center,” Polke continued. “The nearly 3,000 names of the victims are located in the stripes of the flags.”

At 8:46 a.m. on Sunday, 10 years to the minute when American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower, the National Anthem will be sung at the Plaza by Polke’s grandson, Michael Slifer, and his girlfriend, Payton Mayzel.

“Anyone who would like to stop by is welcome to walk amongst the flags and the read the names of the people who died that day,” Polke said. The flags will remain at the plaza until sunset, he added.

A display of nearly 3,000 of Michelotti’s flags has been installed at Battery Park in Manhattan, not far from Ground Zero, Polke added.
