07/14/10 PRESS RELEASE: Foley to Fedele: Stop Asking for More Unconstitutional Government Handouts

Foley to Fedele: Stop Asking for More Unconstitutional Government Handouts

Stamford, Conn., -- Yesterday, the United States Second Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the top up, or trigger portion of the Citizens Election Program is unconstitutional. Ignoring the ruling from the Second Circuit, the Fedele campaign has refused to return the top up portion of the funds he has received from the SEEC totaling close to $1 million and has applied for more.
Tom Foley released the following statement regarding Lieutenant Governor Fedele’s refusal to return the funds:

“Despite the fact that the Second Circuit Court of Appeals found that close to a million dollars of the SEEC grant given to Mr. Fedele is unconstitutional, Mike Fedele has already begun spending the money he received and is refusing to give it back. This money belongs to the people of the State of Connecticut and Mike’s insistence on claiming it as his own, and applying for more, disrespects yesterday’s ruling by the Second Circuit as well as the United States Constitution.

“Mike is a man of means who could have raised money without the CEP and used his own money to help finance his campaign, but he chose to use taxpayer’s money instead. Mike has consistently claimed that he will abide by the strictest ethical standards if elected governor and he claims that his participation in the CEP is part of that promise. If that is the case, then Mike should return the portion of the CEP grant that has now been declared unconstitutional and not take any more of the unconstitutional supplemental funds. To do anything less would be disrespectful of the our constitution and the people of Connecticut.”
