Oprah may or may not have spent part of her teen years prostituting, as the NATIONAL ENQUIRER reports. This is a big story - for white folks. People of color might just shrug it off as just another thing someone might do to survive or get through a phase. In addition, those with genuine insight into the human condition such as comic Lenny Bruce usually figure that we are as good or as bad as we can afford to be, at the time.
At a 12-step meeting in Greenwich, Connecticut, a person of color was isolated. The white members gossiped that horrors she had been a hooker in her substance-abusing days. They rarely looked at themselves and their own sins of commission such as embezzling and sins of omission such as not getting a promotion in their own days of wine and roses. The past is not prologue. Often it's just that: the past.
