04/09/10 Politicians, journalists And Community Leaders Came To Christ Church To Praise The Newspaper Editor Who Went To Meet His Maker

Praise of Bernie Yudain - GreenwichTime

"'I'd read his column -- and I taught grammar -- I'd look at his column and analyze his sentences, and walk away in awe at what he could do.'

-- Joseph Pisani, former editor of Greenwich Time and The Advocate

'I've never known anyone who loved Greenwich Time, and loved Greenwich, more than Bernie.' -- Bruce Hunter, former Greenwich Time managing editor

'Bernie was both of this town and way beyond it. He spoke with the authority of a Walter Cronkite, the thoughtfulness, gravitas and gentleness of a Tom Brokaw, with a wisp of the poetic nostalgia of a Garrison Keillor.' -- Marnie Linen Dawson Carr, daughter of the late James Linen, former president of Time, Inc., and family friend.......

No One Who Was Disadvantaged, Downtrodden Or Poor Came To Say That Mr. Yudain's Writings Ever Gave Them A Voice At The Greenwich Time.

No Weak Or Powerless Person Said, "That when no one would listen, no one would help, Bernie stood up against the powers that be in Greenwich and gave me a voice."

There's An Old Principle For Preachers, Adopted Also By Some Journalists, That Says Faithfulness To The Truth Calls Us To "Comfort The Afflicted And Afflict The Comfortable."

No Got Up At Christ Church And Said That Greenwich Time Editor Bernard Yudain Was A Newspaperman That Comforted The Afflicted Folks In Town And Afflicted The Very Comfortable Of Greenwich.

Mr. Yudain And His Brother Ted Ran The Greenwich Time With An Iron fist.

Bernard Yudain's Policy Of Turning A Deaf Ear To The Plight Of The Towns Less Fortune In Greenwich Was Continued By Ex-Greenwich Time Editor Joe Pisani, Ex-Greenwich Time Editor David Warner, Ex-Greenwich Time Editor Jim Zebora, Ex-Greenwich Time Editor Bruce Hunter And Soon To Be Ex-Greenwich Time Editor David McCumber.

Bernard Yudain Was Known As A Feisty Reporter Who Would Fight For The Rich And Powerful.

Mr. Yudain is most famous for breaking the story that the United Nations was planning to move into the wealthy back country of Greenwich in 1944.

Latter, The Ultra-Conservative Yudain Was Involved In The Executive Emergency Service Corps, The Shadow Government In The Case Of A Nuclear Holocaust To Be Run Out Of The Bunker At The Greenbrier Resort

Here Is The Eulogy That Reverend. James B. Lemler Did Not Give For Bernard Yudain Yesterday...

A thought for you to ponder this morning

We all here are members of the priesthood of all believers.

God has a call on each and every life in this place.

What is God asking from you?

No one is left out. God is nothing if not an intimate God.

A God who knew everything about you even before you were formed in your mother’s womb!

A God who created you with specific gifts for ministry and with a plan as to how you may use them.

I ask you to ponder this question – What is God calling you to do this morning?

Now That Ex-Greenwich Time Editor Bernard Yudain Has Left His Very Comfortable Backcountry Home He Called Overlook Farm He Must Now Stand Before His Maker and answer this questions.

Bernard, When I Was Hungry Did You Give Me Something To Eat?

Bernard, When I Was Thirsty Did You Give Me Something To Drink?

Bernard, When I Was A Stranger Did You invite Me into Your Home?

Bernard, When I Was Naked Did You Personally Clothed Me?

Bernard, When I Was Sick Did You Personally Visited Me?

Bernard, When I Was In Prison, Did You Come To Me.Then "Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?

Then Bernard Yudain Will Probably answer, "Lord, When Did I See You Hungry And Feed You, Or Thirsty And Give You Something To Drink?

Oh Lord, When Did I Get A Chance To See You And Invite To Overlook Farm, Or Needing Clothes And Clothe You?

My Lord, When Did I Ever See You Sick Or In Prison?"

And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.- Mathew 25:40

One who is gracious to a poor man lends to the LORD, And He will repay him for his good deed.- Proverbs 19:17

"And whoever in the name of a disciple gives to one of these little ones even a cup of cold water to drink, truly I say to you, he shall not lose his reward."- Mathew 10:42

To The Rich, God Has Given Wealth That They May Relieve And Comfort His Suffering Children;

But too often the wealthy of Greenwich are indifferent to the wants of others.

They feel themselves superior to their poor brethren.

They do not put themselves in the poor man's place.

They do not understand the temptations and struggles of the poor, and mercy dies out of their hearts.

In costly dwellings and splendid churches, the rich shut themselves away from the poor; the means that God has given to bless the needy is spent in pampering pride and selfishness.

The poor are robbed daily of the education they should have concerning the tender mercies of God; for He has made ample provision that they should be comforted with the necessities of life.

They are compelled to feel the poverty that narrows life, and are often tempted to become envious, jealous, and full of evil surmisings.

Those who themselves have not endured the pressure of want too often treat the poor in a contemptuous way, and make them feel that they are looked upon as paupers.

But Jesus Christ beholds it all,

It is Jesus who was hungry at the soon to be cut Town Hall Social Services office..

It is Jesus who was a stranger and day laborer at a 30,000 square foot home on Round Hill Road.

It is Jesus who was sick and who did not have money to fill the prescription from given me in the Greenwich Hospital Emergency Room..

It is Jesus who was a fatherless teenager in Mianus, who took drugs to ease the pain and ended up in prison.

While you were feasting at your bountifully spread table in the backcountry, It is Jesus who is famishing in the hovel in Byram.

While you were at ease in your luxurious home, It is Jesus who is a stranger in a strange land, who just moved to Pemberwick.

While you crowded your wardrobe with rich apparel, It was Jesus getting his child's shoes at the thrift shop in Chickahominy .

While you pursued your pleasures, Jesus was a single mother in a Glenville apartment who did not have any more milk for her children.

WHY? WASN'T THERE ONE PERSON At CHRIST CHURCH THAT GOT UP AND SAID .....

"Bernie was a saint, he came to my little hovel of an apartment in Byram and saw that my children had no milk. He took us up to Overlook Farm and feed us a bounty spread out on a table. He even gave my husband an overcoat. I never experienced such love being a stranger from Guatemala."

It is not the quantity of prominent speakers who show to remember you at your funeral. It is the quality of the message about you.

Many feel that it would be a great privilege to visit the scenes of Christ's life on earth, to walk where He trod, to look upon the lake beside which He loved to teach, and the hills and valleys on which His eyes so often rested.

But we need not go to Nazareth, to Capernaum, or to Bethany, in order to walk in the steps of Jesus.

We shall find His footprints beside the sickbed, in the hovels of poverty and in every place where there are human hearts in need of consolation.

In doing as Jesus did when on earth, we shall walk in His steps.

NOW THAT"S SOME GOOD PREACHING

If Reverend. James B. Lemler Ever Delivered This Message To The Very Wealth Congregation At Christ Church, They Would Crucify Him

NOW THAT ENDS ANOTHER GREAT GREENWICH ROUNDUP EDITORIAL
