Gerardo Lombardi, 75, was arraigned in Stamford Superior Court today on a charge of first degree murder, following the death of 49-year-old Alison McKnight Lombardi of Indian Pass, his daughter-in-law.

Mr. Lombardi was escorted by Greenwich officers to the courthouse for his 2:15 arraignment. Mr. Lombardi had no reaction to questions asked of him by media while being taken from the Greenwich police station.

Mr. Lombardi was arrested yesterday after police responded to a 10:47 a.m. 911 call reporting gunshots and a scream. Officers found Ms. Lombardi dead in the back yard of 36 Nicholas St. They determined she had been shot and stabbed.

Ms. Lombardi was the owner of 38 Nicholas St., where Mr. Lombardi lives, and 36 Nicholas St.....

...However, Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Paul Ferencek said “the defendent confessed to Greenwich detectives.”

As the case was presented to the judge, the clerk said Mr. Lombardi suffers from “multiple illnesses and disabilities.” He will receive a medical evaluation and be placed on suicide watch.

Mr. Lombardi has no violent criminal record.

Mr. Ferencek called the prosecution’s case strong, saying the woman was “cut down in her back yard.” He called it a “completely bizarre case.”

Mr. Lombardi was represented today by Public Defender Howard Ehring.
