Men’s Basketball League Registration/Meeting
Set for November 5
The Department of Parks and Recreation announces that the Registration/organizational meeting for the Men’s Basketball leagues will be on Thursday November 5, 2009 at 7 pm at the Bendheim Western Greenwich Civic Center located at 449 Pemberwick Rd. in Glenville 06831.
Anyone wishing to enter a team, or people that want to get on a team must come and register at this meeting. We accept resident teams, and teams from Greenwich businesses, and corporations.
Games are played Monday thru Thursday evenings at various gym locations around town. The league is set to begin January 4, 2010.

Faugano, will conduct a public ponytail cutting on stage in the CCS
Cafetorium at 3PM. The ponytails will be donated to Locks of Love to make
wigs for cancer patients undergoing radiation and chemotherapy. After the
public ponytail cutting event, Principal Beck and students will move to
Ms. Faugano's salon in the Mill Pond shopping plaza for haircuts.
All CCS students are encouraged to participate by making a donation of any
amount to Change for Charity to benefit children's cancer research.
Students that make a donation are permitted to wear a hat in school today!
These events are part of an ongoing school-wide service initiative to
benefit children with cancer.

Candidates take wrong position - Greenwich Time Editorial
Here's something you don't see every day: Four candidates for an elected board meet to debate a controversial issue, and all four agree with each other.
The issue: The Greenwich Housing Authority's desire to expand its McKinney Terrace senior housing complex in Byram.
Many in Byram are opposed to the idea, and the candidates this week agreed with them during a debate sponsored by the Byram Neighborhood Association.
"I don't think it's the right area of town for our seniors," said First Selectman Peter Tesei, a Republican, who is vying to keep his position against Democratic Selectman Lin Lavery.
While we credit the candidates for taking a clear stand on the issue, all four are wrong in this case.
The town needs more affordable housing. It needs more senior housing. Expanding McKinney Terrace will not get the job done, not by a long shot, but there is available space there to make progress on the problem, and 56 new units of senior housing is not going to have a drastic impact on Byram.
In short, Greenwich's record of creating affordable hosing is a bad one. By state statute, the affordable housing stock in a town should be at least 10 percent. Greenwich is at roughly half that. It needs to become more aggressive in closing that gap. The McKinney expansion would be a step, one whose plusses would outweigh any potential minuses....

Residents 'Go Wild' for land trust
On a beautiful autumn day, one day after a thunderstorm drenched the area and kept people indoors, Old Greenwich resident Chad Messer relished the chance to take his three daughters outside Sunday.
He decided there was no better place than the Greenwich Land Trust's annual fundraiser, "Go Wild!"
"It's a good cause and it's great to get out of the house," he said as he held 16-month-old daughter Lindsay as his two other daughters Caroline, 5, and Hartley, 7, waited for a pony ride.
It's the 10th year the land trust has held the popular fall event....

Japanese school opens its doors to all for cultural festival
In a quiet area of Greenwich just off one of the town's main thoroughfares, Japanese culture bloomed on a fall day as leaves fell to the ground.

Marina receives funding in drive to improve water quality
A town marina received just under $10,000 as part of drive to keep Long Island Sound clean.
Beacon Point Marine in Cos Cob will receive $9,750 for operating and maintaining a marine pumpout facility. Boaters can have their sewage pumped out at the facility instead of dumping it into the water.
Rick Kral, the marina's owner, said the station has operated for the last six years and the state provides an annual grant to offset some of the operating costs.
"It's a free service (to the boaters) so the state provides the grant. If we charge for it they won't do it," he said.....

Sales up but prices down for houses in region
Sales of single-family homes in Fairfield and New Haven counties increased in August compared with a year ago, although prices continued a downward slide.
The median price of a home sold in Fairfield County in August 2009 was $490,000, down 13.35 percent compared with a median price of $565,500 in August 2008, according to the monthly report by The Warren Group of Massachusetts. The Warren Group, which tracks real estate trends in New England, said 642 single-family homes were sold in Fairfield County in August of this year.
The Warren Group noted in a statement that August was the second month in a row that showed higher sales of single-family homes than the same month a year ago....

Tesei has earned second term - Letter To The Greenwich Time Editors
Peter Tesei deserves a second term as first selectman. Firstly and most importantly, he has been a terrific leader of our town, a performance I have witnessed up close.
Secondly, he has the financial background that we will so critically need during the next two years. He was on the Board of Estimate and Taxation for 10 years, the last six as chairman. As first selectman and in spite of the negative impacts caused by the recession, he maintained a 3.5 percent mill rate increase, far smaller than most other towns in Connecticut.
His opponent, Lin Lavery, has done a commendable job as selectman, especially on the environment. Let's keep her in that position.
Please join me on Nov. 3 in voting for Peter Tesei.

Reviewing the various domiciles we occupied in a fairly peripatetic life, I thought how important a part neighbors played in that adventure.
For the most part, we were lucky. Indeed, we made some strong friendships. The few clunkers we suffered were a passing annoyance but nothing more.
One family we cherished lived in one of our Georgetown situations. We had rented a small row house on O Street NW, across the street from Rose Park.
Settling in, I addressed the tiny patch of garden in front of the house, which was overgrown with weeds and a few skeletons of neglected shrubs. I picked up a bushel basket on the sidewalk and stuffed the debris into it.
Next day I found a terse note stuck in the door from my next-door neighbor informing me I had scarfed his bushel basket.....

The Bruce Museum in Greenwich has come up with some refreshingly different shows this year. In addition to an exhibition of European masterpieces from the Museo de Arte de Ponce in Puerto Rico, it is offering two shows of works from the collection of Olga Hirshhorn: “West African Gold from the Ivory Coast,” the smaller but in certain ways more impressive of the two shows, and “The Mouse House” (reviewed in the Sept. 4 Weekend section of The Times), which contains some 200 small-scale artworks and artifacts that Ms. Hirshhorn used to decorate her 500-square-foot pied-à-terre in Washington.
Hirshhorn, 89, grew up in Greenwich but now lives most of the year in Florida and on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts. She is the widow of the art collector and philanthropist Joseph Hirshhorn, who, in 1974, founded the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden on the mall in Washington. Like her husband, Ms. Hirshhorn is an avid collector — not only of art but also of toasters, hats, even pencil sharpeners.
She began her African gold collection in the 1970s, focusing on the very finely wrought ornaments and pendants made by skilled goldsmiths of the Baule and Lagoon peoples of Ivory Coast, especially those of the Akye, Kyaman and Adjukru communities. About 90 of these objects make up the current display, arranged in cases and dramatically lighted in a darkened room......

Norwalk cop charged with having sex with minor
A city police officer turned himself over to Greenwich police and was charged with having sex with a minor female about five years ago in Greenwich.
Anthony Santo, 42, of Norwalk, was arrested on a warrant and charged Friday evening with second-degree assault and risk of injury to a minor, Greenwich police said.....
....Santo was arrested after a three-month investigation, Greenwich police said in a statement. The victim was a minor female. Rilling said Santo has been placed on administrative leave, and the department will conduct its own investigation to determine whether he violated any department regulations regarding the alleged incident....
....Second-degree assault, a felony, can be charged in numerous circumstances. Where minors age 13 to 15 are concerned, a person can be charged if the person having sex with the minor is at least two years older than the victim....

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but when it comes to Greenwich real estate, they can translate into millions of dollars.
From the first click on a Realtor's Web site, to the glossy brochures piled on a marble-topped kitchen island at an open house, photographs are a big part of any sale. In today's uncertain market, the importance of professional work for even the smallest condominium is debatable, but agents and professionals agree that visuals are important when it comes to multi-million-dollar estates.
New Canaan-based real estate photographer Phil Scott said he has seen some business drop off, but the demand for photographs of high-end homes, and aerial photography, is going up....

Science class could get a lot livelier for public school students in the not-too-distant future.
After several years of disappointing scores on state science exams, school officials have recently gone back to the drawing board with plans for an overhaul of the district's science curriculum.
"We have been trying to tweak things over the last few years in science. But we're basically saying, at this point, that we need a structural overhaul. We need to change the curriculum," said former Assistant Superintendent of Schools John Curtin, now serving as a special projects manager....

Jeff’s philosophy is based around a model he’s been teaching for several years called the Four Pillars of Success. “PILLAR ONE is that we have to have some practice rooted in silence; whatever it is that allows you to get in touch with your Source. Because in my mind and on an energetic level, it’s almost like we’re an electrical appliance, or a hybrid car; one of the old ones that you had to plug in. At some point in the day we’ve got to plug in. I recommend at least 5 to 15 minutes every day. It doesn’t matter if it is sitting in the shower if that’s the only place you can find any quiet, because that’s actually where I find mine. Fifteen minutes every morning in the shower with the water running, in the quiet, because I have an autistic child that starts talking at 6 AM when he wakes up and doesn’t stop until 10 PM when he goes to sleep, and that’s about the only 15 minutes of silence I can find. So we have to have a practice rooted in silence, and from a scientific measure, we’re just recharging our energy. Otherwise we go out in the world and have nothing to share.
PILLAR TWO is that we have to have an idea of what our unique creative expression is in the world: i.e. what each of us feels we have been placed on this earth to do. And it doesn’t have to be right. Because as Norman Schwarzkopf said in a seminar I once saw him give, was that the worst thing he saw in the army was that no one was making any decisions. The only way to know that anything is right is to make a decision, and if it’s wrong, correct it. I say the same thing for individuals, because most of us spend our entire lifetime waiting for someone to tell us what our unique expression is, or kind of knowing what it is but waiting for someone to come and reinforce it. So pick something, literally, that you sense is your unique expression, and seek to build a life around it that offers something to the world.
PILLAR THREE is that you have to have a forward vision, three to five years out, of what your unique creative expression looks like in the world. The way I teach people to do this is to have a two to three minute movie that you can play in your head all day long, especially as you go to bed at night. A two-minute movie of you and what a day in the life of you looks like: the house you live in, the car you drive, where and what you do at work. Are you singing to an audience? Are you best plumber in the world? Are you the best insurance salesman, doctor, accountant or basketball player? What does that vision look like three to five years out in a perfect day in the life of you? And then give it up to the Universe because in all likelihood that vision, while it may come true, will find reasons to change and grow as you make it bigger and better. We need to give our energy a direction to move in. It’s critical that we do that. Otherwise, we flounder. It’s like getting in our car without a navigation system and driving around with no idea where we're going.
PILLAR FOUR is that what we do has to be grounded in service. There is nothing to get. If I can leave you with any message, it’s that. There is nothing to get. There’s no money to get; no love to get; no sex to get; no happiness to get. There’s nothing to get that isn’t already in us. The world shows up and reflects what we are. If we have lack in our life, it’s because we're holding on to lack within ourselves. If we’re seeing things we don’t like, it’s because we're seeing things within ourselves that we don’t like. There is nothing outside in the world that we could possibly get that could fulfill us except to fulfill our own dreams of who we are.”
